Informed Comment: Call for Essays

Want to write a Guest op-ed for Juan Cole’s blog, Informed Comment?

I just received an email from him which he sent to the LBAN (Liberal Blog Ad Network) group list.

He makes a generous offer to help drive more traffic to LBAN blogs.

I’d like to help out other members of this group, and it occurred to me that one way to do it would be to print guest op-eds with link backs.

He’s looking for 750-word essays – particularly critiques of the McCain campaign.

I originally thought I might just link to some stories at other Lban blogs, but finding ones appropriate to what I usually talk about is not easy.

Since we’re in the presidential campaign season, though, and since I post on general politics in addition to foreign policy, actually the appropriateness issue is less salient right now.  Most of us are probably commenting on the campaign in one way or another.  I’m especially interested in a range of critiques of the McCain campaign.

Those of you who have books are welcome to suggest a short essay related to the book, and if I like it for my site we can put in the Amazon link.

Trip Report

or “What I Did on my Holiday Weekend”

I had an awesome time on the Mendocino Coast – about 140 miles north of San Francisco.  It was a special celebration in honor of  my brother-in-law’s 60th birthday.   My sister and her husband rented a 5 bedroom house on a bluff right next to the ocean.   The above picture is a view from the deck.   All of their close friends from the Bay Area came up as well as another couple from the Midwest.   It was kind of like The Big Chill meets Sideways.

In Search of…

Found Poetry

From our StatCounter service I receive daily emails with various stats, including the search terms that people used to find our site.  I usually let these sit in my inbox until I have a few months saved up and then I sort through and pick out some of the strange or unusual ones.   As the list builds, I begin to notice common themes and phrases. Occasionally they will be in a sequence that actually makes sense.  By grouping and rearranging the phrases I put together the following Found poems.  The phrases in the titles and passages are exactly as entered. I haven’t edited for spelling or added/removed words.

our multipolar disorder

elected officials inept

crippling nostalgia

the american dream? time to wake up!

the next revolution is gonna be a revolution of ideas

if it’s a lie, then we fight on that lie, but we gotta fight

the fear urgency of now

no matter how long the darkness is

the sunbeams will cut through them like swords.

we are confronted with the urgency

while usa sleeps about war

Pony Party: Pizza & Beer

For lunch today I had pizza and beer.   mmmm, my two favorite food groups!

That caused me to come home late… and now the PP is late… and I haven’t written anything anyway…  so let’s just have more pizza and beer.

I’m native to the Chicago area so when I moved away from home I had to learn to make my own.

My specialty is stuffed spinach.  (a la Edwardo’s*)

Olympic Torch in San Francisco

Screen Cap from SFGate

Former mayor Willie Brown, football player Hershel Walker, and swimmer Natalie Coughlin, carry the torch on the final leg of the ‘surprise’ route.  Surrounded by a phalanx of Chinese security, police with batons,  and a motorcycle motorcade….with nary a protester in sight.   Yep – this is how San Francisco shows its Olympic spirit!

On April 9th the Olympic torch came to San Francisco – the only North American city on its route.  This was preceded by weeks of controversy over China’s human rights record, the situation in Tibet, and how this most liberal american city would  handle the event and the surrounding protests.   My parents (from Illinois) were in town that week so I took the opportunity to schedule a day off and go see the Olympic torch.

Lots more pics below the fold.

Free Tibet on Golden Gate Bridge

One World One Dream – Free Tibet 08

Screen caps from KTVU Video

This is the BIG story in the Bay Area tonight.  These 3 people on the bridge were truly brave souls and after 3 hours flying their banners and Tibetan flags, they were taken into custody and booked for felony conspiracy.  The city of San Francisco is ‘bracing for uproar’, iow shitting bricks, about what to do with the Olympic torch relay on Wednesday.  After London and Paris I can only imagine what will happen here. Tensions have been building for weeks now.

Top Commenters @ Docudharma

h/t ek hornbeck for the numerical inspiration

Below are the members of the Docudharma 1000+ Comments club.   What a fine group it is!  Like a council of elders.   There were a few surprises in here. One of which is ME (the lurker) showing up in the list.   I also thought buhdy would be the comment king, but he took 2nd in # of comments and 3rd in the Avg. comments category.  kj, who joined in November, way later than most everyone else, made the top 5 and was 2nd in terms of Avg. Comm/Day.  Five of the top 20 joined on our Launch date – 9/12/07.  That will be a special blogiversary!  I’m not surprised to see the Wise Women of DD: pf8, RiaD, kj, NPK, 73rd v, ucc, Robyn, NL, Shaharazade, Alma, tahoebasha3, and KrisC.  Beautiful Sisters all!

I’ve learned (and laughed) a lot from everyone on the list. Thanks & Congrats!

UDPATE:  And if you’re not on the list, I don’t want anyone to feel left out here.  All participants are valued on this blog. (including lurkers!)
