Pique the Geek: Happy New Year Edition 20091231

Happy New Year, everyone!  I hope that your 2009 was a bit happier than mine, but on reflection, mine was not that horrible.  Here is to hoping that your 2010 will be happy, prosperous, and interesting.

I have some reflections about the year, mainly just stream of consciousness stuff, and then will make an argument as to why 2009 is not the end of a decade, nor that 2010 is the beginning of a new one.  Here we go!

Happy 2009 Dharmaniacs!  A toast: to Change for the better!

New Year’s Traditions

Tradition!  Every region in the U.S.–indeed, every country around the world–has its own New Year’s traditions.  Here is a look at the ones I grew up with; I hope that all of you will share yours, too.

I’m at least half Pennsylvania Dutch, and the “lucky” food–the one you must eat for luck during the entire new year–is pork and sauerkraut:

Pony Party is an open thread.  Please do not rec the party.

Hey, buhdy, thanks!  I didn’t expect my little pony party to make it to the grown-up side of the page!  What’s your New Year’s tradition, btw?

Belated Happy New Year + Orchids

Nothing substantial, just wanted to wish everyone a happy new year since I’ve been out of town and only recently started re-popping up on the blogs.  Long story short, I was in southeast Asia for a friend’s wedding (traditional Sikh ceremony, at that).

In lieu of a longer essay, some pics I took of the orchid garden where the reception too place.  Enjoy!

who wants to live forever?

What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away from us

Who wants to live forever

Who wants to live forever?

I watched as you passed by and thought I felt your breath for just a moment on my face, a gentle faerie vapor in the still air of the night. I brushed your hand in my dreams with my hand, an ethereal transfer of warmth from my flesh to spirit to your incorporeal flesh. That moment of space between life and death was filled, again, too briefly with transient comfort of your presence.

But touch my tears with your lips

Touch my world with your fingertips

And we can have forever

And we can love forever

Prospero Año Nuevo!

The caracol (a snail) is a Zapatista symbol for free government entities (juntas). It’s a link between the present and the Mayan past.  And it’s a reminder of a time when the world moved much more slowly.  When there was time for thinking and time for thoughts.  When there was less rushing.  When there was deliberation.

And so the caracol is my wish to you for 2008.  May all of your minutes have 60 seconds.  May there be time to reflect.  May there be time to step off the treadmill.  May there be a pause.  May there be time for you.  And may time gift you with abundant delight, joy, happiness, satisfaction, peace, comfort, safety and health.

Y prospero año nuevo!
