Sharing Music

I don’t think I could express how much music means to me and what has influenced my perceptions and taste, but I’ve been really happy to see a resurgence of meaningful good music and I wanted to at least try and say something about it.

For christmas this year I got my mom’s record collection, and the amount and range of great albums she had started me thinking about the effect of collectively being influenced by music.  I don’t know many people who dislike music, and most are at least affected by it emotionally in some way.  So it has to do something right?

Chess Games

I was taught how to play chess when I was pretty young.  I didn’t actually learn how to play until a few years ago.  The set we had was hand carved marble from Japan.  Each one about 3 inches high, ornate and heavy.  The rooks were pagodas, the emperor and empress sat on huge thrones guarded by samurai.  Staring with my eye at their level it sort of looked like a battlefield.  I had more fun pretending there were stories attached to the forest of pieces than I ever had actually playing the game.  I just never connected with chess the way chess players connect…Sort of like engineers.  I mean, I get it, but I don’t get it.

Generation gaps

So what is there now?

Gen x, y, z.  Then there’s the Baby Boomers (with apparent sub-divisions).  Is that the same as the “Greatest Generation”?  No?  Which ones are the yuppies?  Subset of the hippies?  When the hell did we start naming generations anyways?  After WWII?  I think after the atomic bomb was dropped everyone temporarily lost their minds and starting naming generations of people as some sort of coping mechanism.  What a terrifying invention for mankind.  An instant way for one person to totally obliterate our known existence.  Wheee!!

A change of scenery

I spent about a week and a half out of town over the holiday.  Not only was it my first ever paid vacation but it was also my first time visiting Boston.  While I was there I finally had a chance to clear my head and re-evaluate a few things.

So good news everybody!  I’m moving to Boston 🙂

Philosophy of Race and a side note

I just recently returned from a week long trip to Boston and was planning on posting some amazing pictures I took of the city.  During this process I also came across some papers I had written for a philosophy class.  One about gender and one about race.  I thought about posting them next week, but since the issue of race is being discussed I thought it would be more appropriate to post that one now while the topic had already been breached.

A side note: I hope no one who currently posts or lurks here actually leaves the site.  That was all :p

Robots

What do we know about robots?

Well, generally they are powered by either beer, the hopes and dreams of their captive humans or a desire to kill/help Sarah Connor.

They come in peace.

Or to destroy us.

The only language they understand is binary.

If you hear a robot proclaim:

01001100 01101111 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01101001 01110110 01100101 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01110010 01100101 01110011 01101001 01110011 01110100 01100001 01101110 01100011 01100101 00100001

Respond with:

01010010 01101111 01100010 01101111 01110100 00100001 00100000 00100000 01001001 00100000 01100001 01101101 00100000 01101111 01101110 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 01110010 00100000 01110011 01101001 01100100 01100101 00101110

Surely this will prevent your new robot overlords from killing you and ensure your spot on the newly formed Human Council.

Oh wait……

wrong blog.

Sorry, let me start again.

Let Them Eat Gold

A day after New York City came up with a $1,000 bagel, a local restaurateur unveiled a $25,000 chocolate sundae on Wednesday, setting a Guinness world record for the most expensive dessert.

War Love and Metaphysics

Why not try some metaphysics?

Moving in sine waves, life constantly fluctuating.  Cyclical societal history, personal history.  Love, happiness, fear, hope.  Up and down.  Constantly.

All one vibration, sort of true, quaintly speaking.

If you observe it you ruin it.

Google.  Everybody on the internet uses it.  True data, unimpeded by anything, available to the public.  I’m very torn about my thoughts on Google.  Since the first day I used it, I’ve loved it.
It does have a pseudo monopoly.  But only because they’re good at what they do.
All that data mining though.
But all that knowledge….
