This must give avowed anti environmentalist and overall science denier, Drill Baby Spill, Tea Party Caucus Congressman Tom McClintock of CA 04 a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling inside, because now the area up around his homey base of right wing zealots, Susanville, is undergoing a wild horse purge with Federal Tax dollars- for BP and Anadarko Petroleum. Because he had a staffer rep at the BLM’s planning session per documents at the Dept of the Interior website.
They’re going to take 2000 mustangs off the northern California scrubby ranges and leave a small remnant herd of 500. The roundup started yesterday, Wed Aug 11th.
There are only about 4000 wild horses in CA. This removes half our state’s wild horses ! And they’re doing it now during the hot days so it won’t interfere with DEER HUNTING SEASON.
Flat Earth McClintock recently had a hissy fit that the Federal government might transfer some Federal land into a National Park or Monument here up in Northern eastern CA because the government doesn’t “create jobs.”

Please see my previous diary on this topic, which shows how the the Federal government is timing these mustang elimination programs off their sanctioned wild horse grounds to coincide with when the Congress is on vacation. When I checked the MSM, there is NO mention of the real reason they are doing this, the areas they are clearing coincide with the 680 mile long path of the new Ruby Natural Gas Pipeline. The BLM announces the areas to be cleared, takes comments, and then ignores everything that is said and continues to take the wild horses off the ranges to be stockpiled and warehoused in pens in the midwest. 6000 horses will lose their natural homes by the end of the year.
7 horses died initially, last month, in Nevada after a roundup by Cattoor Livestock. The final death toll was 34 dead horses from this helicopter herding and being run at the hottest part of the year here.

7 Mustangs Run to Death by US Govt- More Brilliant Science Based Decision Making
Several major energy companies operating in Colorado have already signed agreements to ship natural gas on the pipeline, including Anadarko Petroleum Corp., Barry Petroleum Company, Antero Resources Piceance Corp., BP Energy Company, Shell Energy North America, Marathon Oil Co. and Bill Barrett Corp. A major investor in the project is Connecticut-based Global Infrastructure Partners, which could pony up as much as $700 million in the Ruby Pipeline project, when all is said and done.
Wild horses are only allowed currently on about 10% of public land.
Interior’s Sec Ken Salazar is said to be hostile to the concept of horses having a right to be on BLM lands in spite of the Federal law, the Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act of 1971, which sets aside land for them.
Currently the BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public lands of which cattle grazing is allowed on 160 million acres; wild horses are only allowed on 26.6 million acres this land, which must be shared with cattle. The Obama Administration plans to remove nearly 12,000 wild horses and burros from public lands by October 2010. There are currently more than 36,000 wild horses warehoused in government holding facilities and only 33,000 wild horses free on the range.
That’s the removal of about a third of the mustangs in the US for some damned GAS pipeline !
Anadarko Petroleum is part owner along with BP of the Deepwater Horizon Macondo Oil well. Which blew out April 20, 2010, was capped July 15, and is still not completely and permanently plugged with cement on the bottom yet.
The Ruby Pipeline begins in Dick Cheney’s Wyoming. Runs west to the ocean.
El Paso got the BLM right of way on July 13th 2010.
BP and El Paso are business partners on this pipeline.
