Open Thread, with Pooties

Hai!  I need to ask some stupid questions — well, not stupid to me, because I don’t know the answers, but they will probably sound stupid to those of you who are more tech-savvy than I am: which is just about everyone here.

But first, some pooties:

So, okay, the questions.  I bought a new prepaid phone today: the carrier is TracFone, the model was made by Samsung.  Powered it up & got the minutes added — no problems there at all; I even made a call while the battery was still charging.  The instructions said to let it charge for 5 hours the first time, to prolong the life of the battery, so I did.

Then I hit the button called “browse” just to see what else was on the phone — I dunno, I was thinking in terms of those stupid cell-phone games you can play — and half a minute was deleted from my time.  Turns out by “browse” the phone meant browse the web.

Well.

This is the first time I’ve had a cell phone that had browsing ability.  (I dunno, maybe I’m stupid; I thought “browse” was like the menu button most phones have — and no, I didn’t read the instruction booklet yet; I find them to be almost impenetrable: why is it that no phone instructions are written in decent prose?)  I got out of there before any more minutes could be deducted b/c I really didn’t want to browse the web, just see what software my phone has on it.

But it did make me go, hmmm.  I have zero interest in texting anyone, but browsing the web?  That could be a real time sink, esp. when I’m taking a break at work & have been out of touch with the news for hours.

Do any other dharmaniacs have Samsung web-browsing phones via TracFone?  If so, how fast does web browsing eat up your minutes?  Do you have any pointers for me on how to do this as expeditiously as possible, so as to not eat up those expensive minutes?

Any and all suggestions are welcome, except for: “Throw out the phone, Youff!”  I’m going to need it when I seriously start looking for a better job.

Phones are not good for web browsing unless you absolutely need something, like a map.  The screen is too small.   If you don’t have a flat plan for unlimited data, it will be very expensive.

I love pooties because they make me smile.  The parking one was cute.   One of my favorites.

you might have gotten the same phone as my mom.  I don’t know the answers to your questions but I know my mom is worried she will accidentally hit the button for the browser like my BIL did when he was setting it up for her.  Does yours have the camera too?

  2. you could send it to me and I’ll translate it into plain-talkin’ real American English for ya.
