Friday Philosophy: That’s so gay!

So we’re still moving and certainly not in Pittsburgh with all the cool people.  Because of the moving, my brain is pretty much on the fritz as to anything momentous to write about.  There just hasn’t been enough continuous time to sit down and piece something together about the things I’d like to write about…even if I could really delineate what those items might be.

So let’s go to the news and see what we can find.

I haven’t seen any mention of this item here:  Radcliffe supports gay group with ‘generous’ donation.  Yes, the Harry Potter star is anti-homophobia and believes in the work being done by the The Trevor Project to combat teen suicide.

“I am very pleased to begin my support of The Trevor Project, which saves lives every day through its critical work,” said Daniel Radcliffe. “It’s extremely distressing to consider that in 2009 suicide is a top three killer of young people, and it’s truly devastating to learn that LGBTQ youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. I deeply hope my support can raise the organization’s visibility so even more despondent youth become aware of The Trevor Helpline’s highly trained counselors and Trevor’s many other resources. It’s vitally important that young people understand they are not alone and, perhaps even more important, that their young lives have real value.”

From the Trevor Project website:

The Trevor Project operates the only accredited, nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth. If you or a friend are feeling lost or alone, call The Trevor Helpline. There is hope, there is help.

More from Daniel:

“I am very pleased to begin my support of The Trevor Project, which saves lives every day through its critical work,” 20-year-old Radcliffe said in statement released by the project. “I deeply hope my support can raise the organization’s visibility so even more despondent youth become aware of The Trevor help line’s highly trained counselors and Trevor’s many other resources. It’s vitally important that young people understand they are not alone and, perhaps even more important, that their young lives have real value.”

Harry Potter actor makes major donation to The Trevor Project

A final bit that less pleasing, at least to me.  Why is it that such an action would cause people to think he must be gay?

Daniel Radcliffe gives money to gay group. Is Daniel Radcliffe gay?

Barriers

Doggerel

Sky of blue

mood of gray

hearts of black

chased me away

Once I thought

that I might stay

but my blood ran cold

and my feet were clay

So I hit the road

poor homeless waif

it took many years

to find someplace safe

Too many times

I thought to end it all

But I would find a way

to scale the wall

That kept me hidden

happiness denied

until I learned

to look inside

    This will be completed momentarily.

  1. … “oh, wait, that’t not the author, that’s the actor. Someone will think he’s gay” … and lo and behold.

Hit just the right mood with me.

I saw an article about a week ago on Radcliffe.  Early on in it they mentioned how he had grown up knowing a lot of gay people that were friends of his parents.  That article to the best of my memory, which isn’t that great, didn’t try and hint he must be gay.  I was kind of watching for it, expecting that tactic.

    …in Orange.

  2. Is Daniel Radcliffe gay?

While rather crude and disgusting for asking such under the circumstances…

    …one can hope, can’t they?

    🙂
