Hey! The Boss Skipped Out On Vacation And Left A New Org Chart!

I’m really only posting this because Rusty1776 was wondering what that funny ‘Promote’ button does.  Like I need to get more meta.

Guest Bloggers

Guest Bloggers can post directly to the Front Page and time release their posts using the Publish:, ‘On this Date:’ control of their essay editor.  Please remember it runs in Pacific Time, GMT -8.  Our schedule runs on Eastern Time, GMT -5.

We expect that they will respond to comments.  You can’t pre-post a Tip Jar which is a failing.  We do expect it for contemporaneous posts.

We invite them to participate in discussion actively for up to an hour and a half.  We try to provide them with at least an hour at the top of the Front Page.  All posters who are able to post directly to the Front Page are strongly encouraged to participate in our Administrative Forum at the very least so they can see the daily schedule and notify the rest of us of their intentions.

It’s easy to make a mistake and forget to turn off the Other options:, ‘Put diary on front page.’ and end up with an essay who’s prominence you do not intend.  Please be careful.

Our Guest Bloggers are-

  • Armando
  • breathingstill
  • clammyc
  • GreyHawk
  • Jerome a Paris
  • News Corpse
  • Sidof79
  • stormchaser
  • takebackthehouse

Editors

Editors are able to promote the work of others, including shy Guest Bloggers.  When we promote the work of others we should make sure that we notify everyone else and find out their plans through the Administrative Forum as well as noting the time of our promotion in the promotion comment.

This is because you as Editors have a positive responsibility to make sure that we have ‘fresh’ content on the Front Page and are more than invited to contribute your own using the same super powers as Guest Bloggers.

What is ‘fresh’?

Not that we don’t tolerate some variations, but we do have an audience that expects we will strut and fret our hour on the stage.

Your additional controls are the ‘Promote’ button which you can set to do a ‘Future Promote’ though it’s a black hole for you since you can’t see what’s ‘Future Promoted’ except through the Administrative Forum.

If you promote an essay by mistake you can modify promotion to ‘Demote’ it.  If you or a Guest Blogger accidentally publish on the Front Page you as an Editor can ‘Promote’ and then ‘Demote’ to return the essay to the right hand essay list.

You also have the ability, (Privilege of the Powerful), to edit other people’s ‘diaries’.

You should only do so to make them look more attractive before you promote them.  Notification of the essayist is optional, the author will recognize your work and if you ruin their artistic vision…

You are a bad Editor.

If they have any sense at all they have composed offline and will simply use their power as Authors to change it back loser.  Shame on you.

You also should claim your promotions (unless you are promoting yourself and are modest that way)!  You represent the site!

Admins

Frankly, you should be afraid of me.  My power is nearly absolute.  The only real check on it is that I don’t sign the checks, budhy does.

I can delete comments for good.  I can’t edit them.

I can use all of the Admin controls which include changing the roles of people, everything from SUPER_ADMIN to BANNED.  I can permanently delete diaries out of the database and resurrect the ones you think you have deleted.

I can see your IP, and your password and registry email and user name and change them.  I can change the whole color scheme of the site.

I’m not supposed to without notifying all the Editors and Guest Bloggers but that’s a mere courtesy I’ve engineered.

However should I abuse my power I’d have to answer for it before all the people who can see it (which would be all the observant ones, not just SUPER_ADMINs), and were I to become sufficiently obnoxious in my obsessive desires I’ve no doubt others would control my impulses.

I submit my resignation in advance.

Family obligations.

On the other hand the powers I mostly use are the ones to review what’s in the queue in terms of future essays and future promoted essays so that the trains run on time.

That and my power of persuasion.

Other Admins may have other agendas, they are-

  • buhdydharma
  • kestrel9000
  • Nightprowlkitty
  • On The Bus
  • OPOL
  • Turkana

The Big Windup

Now while this represents a substantial reorganization already you can expect continuing changes.  I’m lobbying pacified to adjust the Editor role so they can deal with ‘Future Promotions’.  I’m lobbying budhy to promote some contributors to Editor and Admin roles.

I’m out there recruiting more Guest Bloggers and Regular Members to contribute to what I think is the friendliest and most welcoming site in the lefty blogosphere.

Be excellent to each other.

Or else.

  1. We encourage a culture where people take their lumps.

good to know who does what ’round here.

  2. twenty pounds thinner? Is that within your super powers?

Can I fear and worship you at the same time?

What do you think of slacks with a respectable plaid pattern in all season wool?

  3. … that is a need facility across the board … ideally, the diary editor would include a tip jar comment subject and text field. Then auto-posting the tip-jar for an auto-posted diary would just be a natural side effect of the auto-post.

He could turn the while upside down in just a couple of keystrokes.

  4. with LithiumCola? I’ve seriously missed his contributions here lately.

  5. I have arrived!

    But am having power issues.

But might get them solved today!

    Or in five days.

But I should be able to get on line at the library!

    Maybe.

So I am sort of in a good news bad news cycle.

Will at least check in tomorrow.

    I miss you guys!
