Meta: Scheduling IV

Admins, Contributing Editors, and Guest Bloggers please pay attention!

I want to take this opportunity to remind all of our Admins, Contributing Editors, and Guest Bloggers about our norms for Front Page posting as previously outlined in-

and

First of all, you have to join the DocuDharma Admin forum.

When you initially join you will only have access to the ‘Contact Us’ forum.  … buhdy or On The Bus or I will have to give you the right permissions.  This is the only way to get good security and it will happen within hours.

There will be diaries for each day, about a week’s worth.  Each diary will contain the schedule for that day as best I know it, including the available slots.

Feel free to volunteer.  …

Please do this as far in advance as you are able to plan.

This is what a day’s schedule looks like-

Friday

6:00 AM Morning Muse (Robyn)

7:30 AM Docudharma Times (mishima)

8:00 AM

10:00 AM

12 Noon

2:00 PM

3:00 PM (exmearden) (tend)

4:00 PM 4 at 4 (Magnifico)

6:00 PM (Robyn)

8:00 PM (Nightprowlkitty)

9:00 PM

10:00 PM

12 Midnight (mishima)

3:00 AM (exmearden) (tend)

The empty spots are times we are looking to fill.

These are the abbreviated rules as posted in each day’s schedule-

Please check here before publishing. Please leave a note that you ARE publishing. Please be ready to tend your essay for 90 minutes. Please give the previous author at least one hour at the top of the Front Page. If you have committed to a time please publish on time. If you are promoting an essay please note the time of promotion in the promotion comment. If content is lacking (especially morning/noonish) please consider the 9 am or noon Pony Party for promotion. Maximum Graphic Width 500. NOW WITH TIMED PROMOTION!

Let’s review them one at a time-

  • Please check here before publishing.  Log into the DocuDharma Admin forum Scheduling Dharma.  Find the Day and Date you want to check the schedules.  I usually put up a week at a time so check the DATE.
  • Please leave a note that you ARE publishing.  Post a Reply to the schedule.  Tell us (and by us I mean ALL of us, ALL the Admins, Contributing Editors, and Guest Bloggers) what time you want, ESPECIALLY if there is a conflict.
  • Please be ready to tend your essay for 90 minutes.  Regular Users and Community Moderators are free to post and run.
  • Please give the previous author at least one hour at the top of the Front Page.  The very least courtesy you can give your fellow Admin, Contributing Editor, or Guest Blogger who has written that last story and expects (probably) that it will be at the top of the page for 2 hours.
  • If you have committed to a time please publish on time.  Blogging is just as much by appointment as TV.  I am extremely out of sorts if TDS/TCR is not up at 11.  If you can’t make it please notify the Admin Forum, otherwise pressing content will feel free to bump you after about half an hour or so.
  • If you are promoting an essay please note the time of promotion in the promotion comment.  First of all, promotions are interchangeable with your own diary- you are proud to have scouted this content and think it’s good enough to be the face of this blog for 2 hours.  You should NEVER turn off the promoted by signature unless you’re promoting your own work.  Also YOU MUST INCLUDE THE TIME!  The next Admin, Contributing Editor, and Guest Blogger is going to want to know how fresh the page is so they can either start writing new content or scouting some.
  • If content is lacking (especially morning/noonish) please consider the 9 am or noon Pony Party for promotion.  You are bad bloggers.  This place is usually pretty dead from mishima’s 7:30 Docudharma Times ’til 2 pm.  SLACKERS!  Until now I’ve hesitated to use auto promote (see below) to cherry pick the previous night’s content, but unless I get some volunteers I’ll be forced to do that which won’t leave much space for spontaneous outrage and breaking news.
  • Maximum Graphic Width 500.  Don’t break the page.  Don’t promote anything that breaks the page.  Use your editing powers to fix it by adding width=”500″ to the <img src statement.  If you feel guilty ‘fess up in a comment.  You need not comment about your promotion in the essay provided you have signed your promotion anyway.
  • NOW WITH TIMED PROMOTION!  Admins can set an essay to promote at any time.  Contributing Editors and Guest Bloggers can request that service in the Admin Forum.

I’ll be charitable and not point out the many ways in which we all fall short of perfection.  The key factors are communication and courtesy.

But ek, my content is BREAKING!!!

So post away.  I do it on the right side where my essay will wait for a break in the action and/or at the same time I’m working things out in the Admin Forum.  It can be promoted at any time.  Yes I do know that it’s easy to forget that the default is Front Page, but if you promote, even if it’s on the Front Page already, you can demote.  If you don’t see a modify promotion button, promote and it will magically appear.

If you can’t stick around waiting for an opening communicate that in the Admin Forum and see if someone can’t help you out.  I can’t guarantee instant response but it will eventually be seen.  I keep it bookmarked and check in every couple of hours when I’m online.

You too have a positive responsibility to monitor the Admin Forum every once in a while for new messages.

We are already approaching a time when competition for Front Page space will become quite intense.  Yet it is undesirable to introduce too much ‘programming’ of our content, your muse strikes when it does and we also need to retain access to the Front Page for worthy content by other people.  If we communicate and exercise courtesy it should not be to hard to accommodate almost everyone without unnecessary squabbling and hurt feelings.

  1. Over at dK the Admins have a chore wheel.  I find that rigid and hierarchical.

  2. if an important piece such as a fund raiser, strike, Veterans action is on the front page consider just putting your post off to the side and allowing it some more time to percolate.

Doing a preliminary sweep of the current content will help.

Also, moving front page stories around will break the news feed connection between the story and the essay.  So re-ordering things should be kept to a minimum.  If our feeds have too many breaks in them certain services will stop carrying us.

Our news feed is like a broadcasting signal.  Certain things can interrupt it, like bad coding, or removing/moving a diary that has already been posted.

    Thanks

I think I stepped on someone today because I forgot the Daylight Savings Time factor.  Duh.  I’m usually exactly 12 hours diff from Eastern Standard. Now it’s 11 (or is it 13) hours and my old brain sometimes forgets.

I have a note from my Mom:

    Dear DharmaBums,

Please excuse Zwoof.  He is old.

I mostly read here, but I have noticed a few probs with the front page lately…two stories up within minutes of each other… the same story being bumped up, again, pushing a brand new story down.

I’ve been hoping it was a glitch in the system.

    An idea/suggestion…

could we have a menu tab or section to find the ongoing series. I know its not very many now, but in future…

I see this much like the ‘essay’ one, click and you go to a page with the most recent episode of each series (buhdy’s Iglesia; plf’s what are you reading; your stars hollow; robyn’s muse, etc) AND a button to click to get all of that series.

    I dunno, just a thought…

    where is BD?

It’s like getting invited to a party and the host goes out for   more beer and never comes back.

Since we are getting more new Dharmnites, DharmaBums, Dharmanese…whatever, I think we need to comment and give more mojo to our new members.

    please use time zone info

10pm has many meanings to me

  3. For a writer as sporadic as I am, I try my best.  Hopefully, I’ll do better now that I’m on your forum.

As a side note, when I post links in the style of [word link], I am often told I lack a closing tag.  So posts here which will have more links at other forums lack them.  The a= href stuff is a pain for me, so if we could fix that, it would rock.

  4. Soapblox said that all the problems with the Event widget have been fixed.  I haven’t tested it fully though.  Should we experiment with this as a way to help with the scheduling issues?

The schedule will be viewable by everyone but only Admins and Editors will be allowed to add or change entries.

hope I haven’t stepped on too many toes.

  5. I FINALLY get it. Thanks so much

  6. have just returned from watching The Golden Compass (Northern Lights) with three boys, aged 11, 10 and 9. Plus 2 45 plus males, one 37 female. I am 74 female. I am totally psyched!  loved it. If this doesn’t save the polar bears nothing will, plus witches are OK for another 100 years, gypsies are in, birth out of wedlock fine; church is out, but they chickened out and cut the last 45 minutes out where the Authority reveals himself as a puling infant kept alive by arrogant ambitious men.

Can’t want for the sequels.  I am now giiving up all my time spent on blogs until after the primaries are over, to reading and writing. It is a total waste of my limited energy. See you tomorrow. Off to go to bed with my two daemons – a male and a female golden retreiver, plus a spare, a black and white cat.

The blogosphere is just getting too serious for me. I am going to write a murder mystery about a boy who committed suicide.

    I’m gone.

  7. disappointments for the children, who have all read or been read to the books since I discovered them in England three years ago and read all three during the one month period I was arranagng for my brother’s  funeral. He had died very suddenly, literally at my feet, so I was probably primed to accept their mixture of evocative and articulate anti church tweaking, supernatural and fantasy and an avid animal lover, and was brought up the Oxford ennvironment of cloistered isolation, so all the bits of the jigsaw fit for me.

But, the disappointment was that the end actually is not the end of the first book, called Northermn Lights in the UK version, which is a huge battle between the forces of good and evil. I have read that in fact they have already shot the last  fortyfive minutes (basically a form of Armageddon) but decided not to include it, so I presume we can expect the end to be the beginning of the next film. Or naybe I have myself am the one who has got the various events all mixed up  and that is the final end of the final book? anyway my grandkids assured me it didn’t end where it was supposed to end. Sometimes time really does appear to be full of holes and I drift in and out of parallel universes.

My personal take is that it was decided that it was just too controversial because in essence the Authority (God) turns out to be helpless and petulant and basicaly dies. Or maybe it is being held in reserve as a body blow next year as the final proof that religion as a political force has lost its sting.

See what happens to one’s imagination when one allows political blogs to influence even mundane matters such as the end of the world as we know it.

Interested in knowing your take e.k.

Please talk among yourselves and consider inviting Bob Johnson to be a regular here.  So damn funny.
