Everybody seems discouraged! Where’s the optimism and spunk? What’s got ya all so down?
Sure we live in an America that invades a sovereign nation with no provocation. An America that is seriously considering bombing another one.
An America that DOES torture.
An America that has a private army of mercenary Hessians who answer to no laws.
An America where as poverty rises, inflation rises, foreclosures rise, and the vast yawning gap between rich and poor widens….the economy is called robust and rosy and healthy and strong.
An America where 50 years after the start of The Civil Rights Movement….we ALL have fewer civil rights. Well actually…where we are assumed now to have no rights, where anyone out of the mainstream is presumed to have no rights, is guilty until proven innocent….An America where if you have a political opinion…..you are not a citizen…

An America where some leaders believe that the small number of declared Islamic Radicals are capable of establishing a Caliphate to ‘threaten Western Civilization.’ An America where many still believe that Sadaam had weapons of mass destruction and was responsible for 9/11. An America where people believe that most or all of the worlds 1.7 BILLION Muslims are intent on destroying America.
An America where the banking industry writes the bankruptcy laws, the insurance industry writes its own laws on health care and disaster coverage….including not insuring children or against hurricanes….or insuring sick people. An America where our Foreign Policy is written by the Military Industrial Complex. An America where the Justice Department refuses to pursue Justice, an America where Congressional subpoenas are ignored with impunity, an America where government officials, if they are ever brought to trial….are given pardons that obstruct investigations and Justice.
An America where anyone who protests is ringed by Storm Trooper like SWAT teams and spied on but their government, reading their e-mails, tapping their phones, intercepting their mail and now….lol, observed by flying spy cameras disguised as dragonflies!
An America where the Jena 6 are persecuted and N****r is still the word of choice to describe Black people in a large section of the country, where people are beaten for being gay, an America that arrests and imprisons one of its own citizens without trial and tortures him for six years. An America where Gitmo is good. An America where we actually have to argue over whether we are a fascist state, or whether this is a DIFFERENT form of totalitarianism!
An America where the hope of its citizens in representative democracy rests on a Democratic Party whose leaders are more afraid of Wolf Blitzers’ and Rush Limbaugh’s opinions than the opinions of the people who put them in office. A Democratic party that lives by polls….except on ending wars. A Democratic Party that is rushing toward a landslide victory in a year or so….but has no real clue as to what it represents. That has become merely a reactionary entity in response to a stunning emergence of a totalitarian government….a Party that is figuring out how to be slightly LESS totalitarian, so it can achieve that landslide. A Party that has abandoned ideals in favor of expediency.
So…………..

Remember, there is ONE solution.
WE could all join together and speak with one voice and concentrate The Power of The People on making our representative government ACTUALLY represent us using this new and wonderful megaphone Al Gore invented for us! We COULD all join together and demand an end to the madness….
We could, really!
We CAN all come together as one and engage in effective action. Every blog….every blogger, joining together in one voice. That alone would make news and change the debate. Fpr instance, every blogger coming together and demanding the one thing that even Wolf Blitzer now realizes is the only way to stop the war…defunding. THAT would make a splash, huh? Say, if every blog for one week talked about nothing else but not funding the war…..they Traditional media would go NUTS!
We could do that.
All we have to do is decide to do it.
Or something like it.
Why don’t we?
All we have left is each other, all we haven’t tried is actually coming together in an effective way. No one els is going to save us, that has become crystal clear.
Together…
Because the way things are going…to paraphrase Franklin, we can all yell together or we will surely all be yelling separately….As the America we know and love fades away. And as we too lose our citizenship and our rights to speak….for having opposing opinions.
But unless and until what is turning out to be the last bastion of hope and freedom for its citizens in America….the Netroots….gets organized and gets its shit together to unite our voices to save our nation and the world from madness and destruction…..
All that will be left to say is…settle back in yer Barcalounger, have another beer and hope something good is on TV….iow,

But first – a caveat so Big A doesn’t smack me upside the head. I support the idea of driving the ‘no funding’ point home through whatever means necessary.
So now the story.
Dinner – Saturday night.
6 people, and the talk turns to politics.
In the room we have 3 R’s, 2 D’s (including me) and 1 listener who rarely indicates her politics. Nobody really knows what she is.
We chat for longer than usual, since politics is depressing these days.
Everyone agrees – Bush is an idiot.
Everyone agrees – Time to consider the Dems.
Everyone agrees – War in Iraq was a terrible idea.
Everyone agrees – Let’s find a way out.
Nobody, not one, sides with me on the defunding issue.
Even the quiet one spoke up and said ‘nuh-uh’.
I do my best (and I’m pretty persuasive) to convince. I use the whole bag ‘o tricks.
No takers. Not even my fellow ‘leftie’ at the table way buying it.
I don’t know what it means to your idea above, and I sure as hell don’t wanna be a Debbie Downer, but it was interesting to me.
Anyhoo, on that potentially depressing note, back to the trenches…
It’s everywhere I go this morning, buhdy. All over the web, too.

He said that on the whole the world is actually becoming more civilized, despite the wars, etc. He talked about a meeting with Queen Elizabeth in which she remarked that earlier people had no concept of human rights (I assumed she included herself in that equation), and that on balance more people are acting in a more civilized way to each other than they were before.
Perhaps because of that more people are seeing through the things done to us and in our name — perhaps more of us are able to see through the lies and deception than before because of this progress – and we want better. We want peace.
Nonetheless, our country has been taken over by thugs supported by large corporations. The real America is now so far away from the ideal America that I don’t even recognize it. We’re in the grips of neo-fascism and people don’t seem to be getting together enough or whatever is necessary to restore democracy and decency to our political system.
So, yes, lets get together to form one giant scream!! Some of this is going to require some major players to check their egos at the door so we can get everyone better organized.
Otherwise, the general public will continue to just “be happy” by shopping themselves into a daze and ignore how distorted our political system has come.
