But like ek horbeck

I would never make fun of LaEscapee or blame PhilJD.  And I am highly organized.

Actually, I’m better organized. 😉

Passover begins on Monday evening. Like all Jewish holidays it’s focus is on community, family and food, especially the food. I was born Jewish and raised in an ecumenical household that celebrated both Christian and Jewish holidays. I never kept a kosher home, although my first and current mothers-in-law did.

My favorite part of most meals is dessert. I’ve been the desert lady since I started a catering company some years back as a hobby. Here are some recipes for Passover deserts that I recently found and I’m trying this year.

Chocolate Caramel Macarons

Instead of the typical buttercream or ganache filling, there’s a crunchy caramel candy layer in between the cocoa layers. These are fudgy little confections more like candy than cookies. They also happen to be both gluten-free and can be kosher for Passover, if you use kosher-for-Passover confectioners’ sugar.

Matzo Toffee With Candied Ginger

Traditional matzo toffee – a Passover-friendly spin on saltine toffee – is an addictive three-layer confection of crackers, brown sugar toffee and melted chocolate. In this version, the chocolate gets a spicy boost from the addition of both fresh ginger juice and chewy candied ginger.

Hazelnut Citrus Torte

A touch of quinoa flour gives this hazelnut torte an underlying smokiness that makes it more complex than most. It also makes it both gluten-free and kosher for Passover.

The Breakfast Club (L’Orfeo)

Got your sitz muscles on and your warm beer and cold pizza ready?  Good, because today I have 2 solid hours of Baroque Opera for you.

photo BeerBreakfast_web_zps646fca37.pngI told you to expect something completely different.

Now the truth is I’m not big on Opera.  Uniformly (well, almost) it’s hours and hours of butt numbing tragedy and L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi is no exception.

It tells the story, at great length and repetitively in song and a foreign language that I don’t understand, of Orpheus and Eurydice.  Allow me to summarize-

Orpheus was a legendary Bard (who says you don’t learn anything from D&D?) who could literally (and I know the difference between that and figuratively) out sing the Sirens and did so in the service of Jason and his fellow Argonauts.

He married a beautiful woman named Eurydice.  Just after their wedding she was accosted by a satyr and rather than submit she ran away and fell into a pit of snakes suffering a fatal bite.

Distraught, Orpheus expressed his grief in songs that made the gods themselves weep and he was allowed to enter Tartarus where his lamentations softend even the hearts of Hades and Persephone.  They agreed to release Eurydice on a single condition- that Orpheus not look back until they were both safely out of Tartarus.

Did I not say tragedy?  Nothing ever goes well in an Opera.  Orpheus misinterprets the agreement and when he reaches the land of the living again with Eurydice a step or two behind (totally sexist) he turns back to see how she is doing.  Poof.  She is now dead dead, no saving throw.

Like a lot of myths and legends you should take this one with a pillar of salt, but you can see why it’s a particularly attractive one for musicians and it is constantly re-visited in that pre-corporatist intellectual property kind of way.

What’s interesting about L’Orfeo is that it’s one of the earliest examples of the ‘classical’ Operatic format that was enormously popular for over 300 years and could be argued persists even today in what we contemporarily call ‘Musicals’.

Monteverdi was right on the cusp of the transition between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque basso continuo.  He was a singer, a gambist (an instrument that hardly exists now except in museums), and, oh yeah, a priest.

Look, I know he had a wife and 3 kids.  He didn’t take orders until after she died and back in the day becoming a priest was kind of like retiring on a pension.  Give him a break.

In fact he’s rather more famous for his Madrigals which in addition to being eminently singable and pleasant to listen to (much more than Opera to my mind) clearly demonstrate the transition between the Renaissance and Baroque styles.

As Baroque style rose the Madrigal was displaced by the solo Aria and that made me sooo mad.

How mad are you?

I’m sooooooooooooooo mad.

Really?

I’m so mad I’m not even going to sing my Aria!

OK, maybe a little.

I know it’s Sunday morning and you all are probably just prying your eyes open. so the last thing you want to do is read something educational. Well this is important and I have your attention. It’s about how to save a life, most possibly someone you know. It’s about sudden onset cardiac arrest

According the statistics from the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among adults over the age of 40 in the United States and other countries and 90% of them will die. The good news is that with early intervention and CPR four out of 10 victims survive.

Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home.

Statistically speaking, if called on to administer CPR in an emergency, the life you save is likely to be someone at home: a child, a spouse, a parent or a friend.

African-Americans are almost twice as likely to experience cardiac arrest at home, work or in another public location than Caucasians, and their survival rates are twice as poor as for Caucasians.

Most everyone feels helpless in this situation but that is going to be corrected today, because this morning you’re going to learn CPR and how to save a life. And more than that, you’re going to share this with people you know. Pay it forward.

Ugh, you say, “I don’t think I could do mouth to mouth.” You don’t have to any more. By-stander CPR is now chest compressions only, two hands on the mid-chest, on the hard bony part (the sternum) between the nipples, 100 times a minute, about 2 inches in depth. It’s going to feel and sound weird the first couple of compressions. You may feel and hear cracking. Ignore it. It’s OK. You most likely are not breaking anything. It’s basically like cracking your knuckles. Don’t be afraid, you can only make it better.

You are going to call 911 and push hard and fast.

It takes less than a minute to learn how to do this. So, here’s the video on how you can save a life.

Now that you’ve learned how to save a life. Here’s today’s history lesson

The Breakfast Club (Spring)

photo BeerBreakfast_web_zps646fca37.pngI told you to expect something completely different.

You know, I really am a rebel and as pyrrho once said I rouse my own rabble.  Allow me to demonstrate by dispensing with the format.

The first thing is- why include a date?  All your posts are date stamped anyway, what’s the point?

Julius Caesar (I, ii, 140-141)

Perhaps you expected something newsy and grim from me.  Well, that’s not how I like to spend my Saturdays.  In fact I generally spend them resting up from the early morning cacaphony of sound that is Formula One Qualifying and refreshing my mind from the realities of another week of struggle.

Something I have mentioned before is that in my youth, before my DJ days, I was into long hair music.  No, not Twisted Sister- Mozart, Bach, and Brahms, which made my contemporaries instantly suspicious of me.  Good, they should have been, my Snape-like air of incipient menace is something I have carefully cultivated for many years.

What is hard for most people today to grasp is that these musicians were pop stars.  They think of them as dusty old relics. Let us talk then about ‘The Red Priest‘.

He was called that due to his red hair and the fact he was a priest.  The bulk of his work was written for Ospedale della Pietà an abandoned children’s home in Venice; though he had enourmous popularity in general for his Operas, a genre where he’s considered one of the major influences and wrote at least 40 of them (with all these composers periodically ‘missing’ pieces turn up of greater or lesser authenticity).

He was a violin prodigy a skill he learned from his father, a barber turned professional violinist and union organizer, and an instrument he was drawn to because of chronic ill health and breathing difficulties, so it’s not surprising that most of his compositions feature it including the one I wish to bring to your attention today.

The Four Seasons is a set of 4 concertos probably inspired by the scenery of Mantua where he worked for a time at the governor’s court.  They are actually part of a larger group of 12 concertos, Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention) published in 1725.

During his tenure in Mantua he struck up a relationship with Anna Tessieri Girò who was one of his favorite performers and while scholars speculate there’s no real proof that their collaboration was anything but professional and contemporary rumors were vehemently denied by Vivaldi himself.

Each concerto has 3 movements, a slow one between 2 faster ones.

Spring

The rest of The Seasons are below the fold.
