Saying goodbye to the USA

No, this isn’t a goodbye diary, although the past month in exile from the computer has seemed so. It looks like I’ll be moving to Mrsalabama’s home soon, because of continued difficulties here in respect to my employment, and the fact that Mrs.alabama… well, I guess I married well, although we didn’t marry for that reason. I didn’t know she was that well off until she came to live with me and decried my condition!

So, I’m looking seriously to become a FA…a foregn american. I must admit to some attude about, at a minimum, my current employment, and my chances for a job of equal pay– much less better pay.

More below the fold…

Lucky for me I speak two languages. One well, the other ‘fluently,’ although I miss context on occasion.

So… I should simply ask, before going further, any advice?

I might be posting a follow-up diary on this, on more specific reasons.

Riddle me this: We want out, but think McCain better to ‘handle’ Iraq?

The American people overwhelmingly think invading Iraq was a mistake, want the war and occupation to end and our troops to come home, the polls say.

The Democratic presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, say they want to do that — not as quickly as we would like, but at least their goal is to get out.

John McCain, the Republican nominee, says it’s fine with him if US troops stay in Iraq for another 100 years, or, as he said once,10,000 years.

Yet people say they think McCain would be better than the Democrats in handling Iraq policy, according to a new Bloomberg-LA Times poll today.  The LA Times reports:

The findings underscore the difficulties ahead for Democrats as they hope to retake the White House during a time of war, with voters giving McCain far higher marks when it comes to experience, fighting terrorism and dealing with the situation in Iraq.

Both Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton have made ending America’s involvement in the war a centerpiece of their campaigns. And even though a clear majority of those polled said the war was not worth waging, about half of registered voters said McCain — a Vietnam vet who has supported the Bush administration’s military strategy — was better able to deal with Iraq.

What dimension are we living in, anyway?  Bizarro World.

You are the cool kids, you get to see the Green Goodness before they do..

Spring = Solar lawnmower

The Enviromower, which we observed back here, was conceived in Australia and is also sold throughout Europe, the UK and New Zealand. And in North America, except there it goes by the name of Neuton. It’s a battery-powered electric mower. As we buy accredited 100% Solar GreenPower from our energy utility, our Enviromower is, in essence, powered by the sun.

The battery is a sealed unit of two linked 12V lead-acid type batteries. It can be removed from the mower, or left in-situ to be recharged. This takes about 12-16 hours. (I originally had my eye on the 36V Bosch Rotak LI with its lithium ion batteries, which are said to charge in one hour! But these mowers seem to be only available in Europe.)

However, from my perspective, the red coloured Enviromower Eco 500 can handle a standard suburb yard with aplomb. It cuts grass very well. It gives a clean, even cut, albeit a little narrower (35.5cm or 14″) than most petrol mowers. Three modes of mowing are possible: attaching the included grass catcher, using the included rear deflector to let the clippings fall behind the cut, or the included mulching plug. This latter attachment keeps the clippings next to the blades, so they’re sliced and diced fine enough to fall down as useful nutrient for improved lawn.

Arctic Seed Vault Open for Business

LONGYEARBYEN, NORWAY (26 FEBRUARY 2008) – The Svalbard Global Seed Vault opened today on a remote island in the Arctic Circle, receiving inaugural shipments of 100 million seeds that originated in over 100 countries. With the deposits ranging from unique varieties of major African and Asian food staples such as maize, rice, wheat, cowpea, and sorghum to European and South American varieties of eggplant, lettuce, barley, and potato, the first deposits into the seed vault represent the most comprehensive and diverse collection of food crop seeds being held anywhere in the world.

PG&E purchases huge carbon offset to help forest

In this case, PG&E customers will pay to offset 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions by giving an undisclosed amount of money to help The Conservation Fund manage a nonprofit working forest in Northern California. That’s about as much CO2 emissions created by 37,000 average PG&E households annually.

Top plastic bag maker in China closes

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s largest plastic bag maker has closed following a state-led environmental campaign discouraging plastics use, Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.

China launched a surprise crackdown on plastic bags in January, banning production of ultra-thin bags and forbidding its supermarkets and shops from handing out free carrier bags from June 1.

Suiping Huaqiang Plastic Co, owned by Guangzhou-based Nanqiang Plastic Industrial Ltd. and employing 20,000 workers stopped production in mid-January.

Sharp to make batteries to store solar power

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s Sharp Corp will team up with Daiwa House Industry Co Ltd and Dai Nippon Printing Co Ltd to develop large lithium-ion batteries that can store solar energy for houses, the Nikkei business daily reported on Tuesday.

NEW SOLAR FARM IN AZ!!! About time

Arizona Public Service (APS) has announced plans to build a 280-megawatt concentrating solar power plant in the desert 70 miles southwest of Phoenix. The Solana Generating Station, if it were operating today, would be the single largest solar power plant on the planet. Solana, with its thermal energy storage, will be able to operate 24/7 providing power for 70,000 homes.

GO ESKIMOS!!

A tiny Alaskan village is suing 24 major energy companies for damages due to global warming. The 390 residents of Kivalina, an Inupiat Eskimo village built on a barrier reef in the Arctic Ocean, have found themselves of the front lines of climate change over the past few years, as melting sea ice has exposed the village to storms and erosion. The cost of eventually relocating the entire village has been estimated at $400 million

UPS and Coca Cola cleaning up their trucks

Coca Cola has ordered 120 Eaton hybrid delivery trucks, on top of the 20 it bought in 2007. These should reduce emissions by about 32% and fuel consumption by up to 37% compared to the company’s regular trucks.

UPS Canada is going a different route: Propane (LPG). The company will use 139 new propane-powered trucks that are expected to reduce UPS’ CO2 emissions by 254 metric tonnes per year, a 35% improvement compared to conventional engines. “Additionally, particulate matter emitted from vehicles will be virtually eliminated.

Anyone have a spare million they can spend to rent a forest?

For rent: “830,000 hectares of pristine tropical rainforest. Rich in wildlife, including forest elephants and gorillas. Provides a regionally important African green corridor. Price: $1.6m a year. Conservationist tenant preferred, but extractive forestry also considered. Please apply to the Cameroonian minister of forestry.”

This offer by the government of Cameroon has been on the table since 2001, but they haven’t found any takers from the conservation side yet. If nobody steps up, the forest of Ngoyla-Mintom will probably be leased to logging companies.

Perhaps if voters in the US spent money on this instead of funding candidates we could really make a difference.

First flight of biofuel jet

The airline’s president Sir Richard Branson described the launch as historic in his pursuit of environment-friendly flights.

The launch came as a debate on environmental degradation dominated media in Europe and America, and also as industries in the US embrace new technology, which can reduce carbon dioxide by more than 50 per cent from the atmosphere.

The fuel used in the trial flight was obtained from coconut and babassu oil from Brazil and the Philipines.

No modification was done on the engines of the aircraft to accept the use of the new jet oil.

Organic fertilizers can act as carbon sink

Applying organic fertilizers, such as those resulting from composting, to agricultural land could increase the amount of carbon stored in these soils and contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, according to new research. Carbon sequestration in soil has been recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the European Commission as one of the possible measures through which greenhouse gas emissions can be mitigated.

Bacteria and Nanofilters, clean up that water

Bacteria often get bad press, with those found in water often linked to illness and disease. But researchers at The University of Nottingham are using these tiny organisms alongside the very latest membrane filtration techniques to improve and refine water cleaning technology.

The songs of birds seem to fill the wood

That when the fiddler plays

All their voices can be heard

Long past their woodland days

Ok tigers are not birds…

The Wildlife Conservation Society and the Panthera Foundation announced plans to establish a 5,000 mile-long “genetic corridor” from Bhutan to Burma that would allow tiger populations to roam freely across landscapes. The corridor, first announced at the United Nations on January 30th, would span eight countries and represent the largest block of tiger habitat left on earth.

The proposed corridor includes extensive areas of Bhutan, northeast India, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia, along with potential connectivity to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It has already been endorsed by the new King of Bhutan, his Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who requested other heads of state to support similar efforts.

And so they linked their hands and danced

Round in circles and in rows

And so the journey of the night descends

When all the shades are gone

“A garland gay we bring you here

And at your door we stand

It is a sprout well budded out

The work of Our Lord’s hand

A Sense of Place

( – promoted by buhdydharma )

Years ago in a book group we had an interesting discussion about our “sense of place.” It was all about where, in the natural world, we feel most at home. I found this a most intriguing question and was very interested in the variety of responses. For example, for some people, a canopy of trees is important. And for others, the wide open spaces and sky was something they were drawn to. I had a friend at the time who loved the desert; a place that, while I can appreciate its beauty, never appealed to me. Since many of these differences did not relate to where people grew up or currently lived, it seemed to me that they were attached to something primordial in our souls. But then, who knows.

As I sit here towards the end of February in what my family from Texas call “the tundra” and dream of warmth and sun, I thought it might be interesting to get over a hump day by talking about our sense of place. While I have deep roots in this place that I live and love the community, the natural world here has always felt in conflict with my soul. I hate the dark short days of winter and the hot, humid, mosquito-infested summers. So I only have a few months out of the year when I really want to be outside and experience the natural beauty that is in the area.

My soul has always been attracted to the ocean. The power of the surf and the endless horizon seems to connect with something deep in me. I feel a big “YES” happening in my bones when I sit and stare at the combination of motion and stillness. I love the sound of the surf and the power of giant waves.

But a few years ago, I had an experience that gave me a different sense of place. A friend and I took a September vacation to The Enchanted Circle of New Mexico. The cornerstone of the circle is Taos, but it also includes Red River, Questa, Eagles Nest and Angel Fire. Our home base for the trip was Angel Fire (named because the color of the aspen in the mountains during fall). One day we took a hike in the mountains around town. We stopped for a rest at one point in a stunning location. I was so moved by the scenery that I remember working on making a movie in my mind so that I could remember it all when I got home and needed to find a calm place in my mind. I noticed not only the visual scenery, but the sound, smell and taste of the place. As we continued walking, I broke out in tears. As I reflected on why, I knew they were not tears of sadness, but of cleansing. I was aware right then, of all the layers of masks I regularly wear to survive in my daily world. And they were all melting away, leaving just me in a pure form. I’ll never forget that moment. I’ve been back to the Enchanted Circle since then, and it always feels like coming home.

I happen to be on the mailing list of a few right-wing sites, and occasionally they provide a minute or two of entertainment. This past couple of weeks, though, one of my favorite mouth-breathing xenophobic neanderthal sites, Stephen Frank’s California Political News and Views, has been on a roll. Here are some of the subject lines that have been enticing readers since mid-February: Guns Saves Lives; CFL Light Bulbs Are Poisoning Us; Global Warming Over, Cold Age Starting?; Global Warming Causing Ice Packs; Lack of Values Causing Campus Murders?; which was evidently answered with, College Presidents Do Nothing to Stop Campus Murders; Medical Researchers Could be Killed by Leftists; and, perhaps most hilariously, What are the Principles of Conservatives? . . . . It’s true: you can’t make this stuff up . . .

The Secret

I just watched and want to recommend an excellent documentary entitled “The Secret”.  From this documentary’s web-site, they describe this film as…

The Secret reveals the most powerful law in the universe. The knowledge of this law has run like a golden thread through the lives and the teachings of all the prophets, seers, sages and saviors in the world’s history, and through the lives of all truly great men and women. All that they have ever accomplished or attained has been done in full accordance with this most powerful law.

Without exception, every human being has the ability to transform any weakness or suffering into strength, power, perfect peace, health, and abundance.

I rented the DVD from Netflix, so while the kids were at school today, I sat and took notes while pausing and going back so as to not miss one iota of information.  My life and my husband’s life are in the midst of transformation and I knew I needed to listen to what was being presented to me.  My husband was getting ready for a job interview when I started the video, he was very impressed immediately and took with him just a small piece of the larger puzzle.  And with that alone, he was offered an excellent job, because of his enthusiasm.  We watched the movie twice today, I’ve reread my notes, now I am retyping my thoughts about this and the phone rings, job number two on the line.  Which is amazing in and of itself, if you knew our current financial status, you’d agree.

“The ideas we build will determine the vibration we’re in and the vibration we’re in will dictate the energy that we attract to us.  Now think about what you really want.”

If you want to watch this amazing documentary, you can pay $4.95 to view it online on their web-site.  But, you can watch the first twenty minutes on youtube for free.  I recommend EVERYONE see this film, these are things we know deep down to be true, but to hear it again reinforces our knowledge of life.  I know these things to be true, but have not recognized it’s full potential.

“Your life is a physical manifestation of the thoughts that go on in your mind.”

Immigration Success? No! Incompetence to the Extreme!!

Which seems to be the norm for this country, just look at the leadership that’s allowed to continue,

across the board, on any subject one might pick!

A Los Angeles man with mental problems,

who spent three months lost in Mexico after being deported despite being a U.S. citizen, sued homeland security

and immigration officials on Wednesday.

Mr Guzman apparently was arrested for trespassing and speant time in lockup than,

“Immigration and Customs Enforcement put Peter Guzman on a bus with $3 in his pocket and put him out in Tijuana,”

said his lawyer, Jim Brosnahan. “With no family or friends in Mexico, he broke down and thought that his country had rejected him.”

Guess what, His Country Had!!

He survived, apparently by begging, washing in a river, and sleeping outdoors, for Three Freaking Months,

he may have had mental problems, but he sure Outshines most of the people I’ve observed, especially this last decade or so.

They finally reunited him with his family, looking for him desperately and in any place they could think of including morgues

after border guards stopped him as he was crossing back into California.

Wonder how many “Super Patriots”, who couldn’t exist in their materialistic world without Low Waged Workers, i.e. Illegals,

will Apologize to a Fellow Citizen, Mr Guzman, of this ever so fine Country!
