Muse in the Morning

Toward the Cusp

Needs and Reasons

Until you can understand

the need for the learning

the reason for the teaching

will remain obscure

But that won’t stop

can’t deflect

the teacher

from trying

to teach

One day

some day

in the future

probably more distant

than would be ideal

maybe the lesson

will be learned

and we can move on

to other things

Assembling the Fragments

Introspection

When you build yourself

out of fragments

assembling carefully

that which is good

shedding the bad

like a winter coat

deciding what fits

what is detritus

left suspended

in the wake

of growing up

why would there be

any desire

to conceal

the finished product?

Do I live my life

to minimize your

discomfort

with the idea

of regeneration

rebirth

renaissance

or do I live my life

to improve

our common existence?

A Thousand Cuts

Sharing Health

In a fair world

a just world

a world balanced

for sharing

rather than greed

we wouldn’t need

to worry

that someone else

getting healthy

would harm us

We wouldn’t seek

to capture

the value of their health

fearing that it would

diminish our own benefit

A note

in a bottle

set adrift

in the river

of time

reach you

can you see too it

that they are read

Doorway

Mort

At some instant

one day

the words will cease to flow

their creator (or vessel)

having passed through

the Door

between herenow

and therethen

The words left behind

the ideas they expressed

the actions they instigated

will be all

that remains

to weigh the meaning

of this particular existence

Regret is extinguished

if the words

have expressed

peacefulness

concern and care

and a life lived well

Smoldering Embers in Iran

I read a comment to a diary last Saturday that spoke of the forces that have been suppressed by the Iranian government. There remains a deep resentment in many of the people of Iran for both the way the election was handled as well as the way the demonstrators were dispatched from the streets.

Their sense of disappointment will simmer below the surface for a long time, much like the feelings many in America felt over the past eight years. We were able to vent and rage and rant in ways that will not be tolerated in Iran.

All of this got me thinking about a poem I wrote in the early eighties. I want to share that poem with you, so hop in a barrel and follow me over the fa-a-a-a-alls…

in some far distant

day to come

that I will see

Oranismystically

we form and transform

the words and thoughts

building an understanding

a commonality

cells aligning

and recombining

Not by becoming

blind–deaf–dumb

but through sampling

our differences

does this creature

Seeds

What if?

What if rainbows

came in textures

and kaleidoscopes

played with sound

What if feelings

were for wearing

and thoughts weighed

each a pound

Would hope appear upward

and love feel cerise?

What would be the taste of freedom?

What would be the scent of peace?

Could I pay my rent

in moonbeams

when the future

becomes our toy?

When hate and greed

are left behind

could I measure wealth

in joy?
