Opposing Shades

Political Correction

Which freedom trumps?

The freedom

to be obnoxious

about the existence

of people who are

different than you

or the freedom

of those people

to be different

to live lives

free from whatever

debasement

you wish to utter

and whatever defilement

you wish to perform?

Splinters

News

Good news

bad news

steps forward

and steps back

There’s a world ahead

that some day

will be reached

by some of you

if you want it

And there are

some of us

who want it

so very much

who will never

reach it

Oh, the irony

of it all

Spindled and Mutilated

Female

Her scars were burned deep

when she was young

and she was told

they were her fault

Or was she branded

when she was older

and became mere

domestic property

Was she even still alive

when there finally came

an opening for

her freedom?

Stain

Mistaken

They have said

we are confused

about our gender

making up stories

for illicit purposes

But we know

who we are

not playing games

but living lives

for the better

It is they

who are confused

have forgotten how

to be human

because of hatred

Broken

In Your World

This place

is not of our creation

or it would be

more loving

more accepting

more open

to difference

But you allow

no other possibility

no place for us

to live freely

to share our way

Your world

is so small

too controlling

too compact

to allow space

for us to dream

And so we die

in one way

or another

since it has

no room

for us

Extending a Flower

Hat in Hand

We are people

somewhat like you

but different

deserving of equality

no more

but no less

We shouldn’t

be required

to beg

Arrows of Love or Hate?

Clapboard Segregation

Walls erected

to keep us apart

to give you

the illusion

that we are

undeserving

of equality

must one day

crumble

rotting on the inside

from the substandard

materials used

to erect them

the unholy thoughts

you believe

your morality

suggests

which anyone

sane

should be able

to see

only to reinforce

your supposed

superiority

Something there is

that does not

love a wall

Rainbow Colors

Attrition Blues

I watch you

as you grow

learn some things

take baby steps

forward

hoping for more

ever willing

to teach you

how to make it so

Meanwhile

waiting for victory

through attrition

has a sour taste

Twisting Pathways

The Long Road

‘Tis a long road

from there to here

from despair to hope

from despondency

to expectation

‘Tis much longer

an endless

journey

if we never

take the first step

Trapped

Chains

We can only

truly know freedom

if we are aware

of the ways

we are in bondage

bound by a culture

which rigidly demands

our strict adherence

to fixed states

unchangeable

unchallengeable

under penalty

of expulsion

or worse

and still manage

to reject

those chains

Are you free?

Coloration

Walled In

men

women

maybe both

sometimes neither

our choice

or at least

it should be

Liberty

for our souls

and yours

if you want it

for you

and your children

your grandchildren

generations to come

the future

Freedom

to live

all the colors

of the rainbow

of gender

as well as skin

The walls

around you

between us

will fall

if you stop

believing in them

Wings of Truth

A Modern Cave

Spreading truth

in the face

of ignorance

we return to the cave

after experiencing

the beauty and wonder

of a better place

a more just world

a brighter future

We understand

the difficulty

you face

having lived in the

in the mostly dark

having only experienced

the shadows

that passed as reality

What we don’t understand

is why you can

no longer hear
