Progressive Voices/Manifesto Project Raw Data

Wherein I am forced to admit failure.

;-(

I tried to stretch my meager talents, but I am just not cut out to be a data guy, I guess. I have failed to come up with a decent way to present this, so I will just publish the list and hopefully someone more skilled than I will step up and do something with it.

Please!!!

Allow me to say in closing….

Everything from here on out is the work of On The Bus, who asked me to publish it after she had done all the hard work of assembling it.

    1. First of all — wow!

    2. Yay! The Economy wins! (This single issue will win the 2008 election, IMHO)

    3. RE: Universal Health Care — The numbers don’t add up. Also, there’s a difference between “Universal” (aka Hillary) and “Single Payer” (aka Dennis). A BIG difference.

In any event — I’m so impressed.

we cannot pretend to be something other than what we are…

If you are not a “data” guy, that’s alright and I respect the fact that you are honest about it.

I don’t think anyone will think any less of you or Docudharma because it.  Peace brother.

Did the right to vote even make the list?

Everything is meaningless if we can’t suck at voting.

    Oh, and nice pics 🙂

  4. I can even comprehend is called dada. What do the #’s on the list mean? Is the list the format or the ideas or contributers votes for issues? Can we still make suggestions? I don’t see regulation covered as in restoring our regulatory agencies or reforming them? I’d start with the one that used to regulate the broadcasters and media the truth in advertising etc.  I want my right to tort back from the corps! Would like the anti trust laws either reinstated or reformed, a little trust busting would be a good thing about now. guess it’s endless so I’ll shut up. Mainly it’s reigning in the corps. they really aren’t people.

That’s a great list! Very thorough.

I am in the process of going back and reading/re-reading the former diaries and comments.  Good stuff.  One comment stuck out in my mind as I was skimming.  That we (libs, progressives, democrats, etc) tend to see all these issues bound together in a web of interconnectedness.  This point of view can be overwhelming, and for me almost paralyzing. Anyway, the list seems like a good starting point for someone wanting to focus energy on a particular issue besides stating what’s important to us.  It’s also a great place to start from to distil threads of meaning and patterns.  I’m sure some of the gifted wordsmiths around here will have some fun with it!

I’m wondering how media ended up so low.  IMHO it’s a huge player in how we ended up in this mess.  Is it because it’s a tool and not an issue?

  5. hi buhdy!   you don’t suck!

I should give some context to what this means…

The first round of this Manifesto project was to identify the issues and principles most important to “progressives”.  buhdy wrote the diaries and I went through all the comments to categorize the issues.  I also have a collection of priniciples but they are not so easy to categorize or reduce to simple terms.  I’m still digesting that piece.

For the issues though, I think the next step would be to have a poll or something where we validate these results.  Is the Economy really our top priority?   (the nice thing about polls on Docudharma is that they can be multi-pick)

From there I was envisioning using our wiki to research each topic and come up with a platform.  For example, Tax Reform is pretty generic.   What exactly are the reforms we want to see?   Flat tax? Raise/lower taxes? for which income level? or for which products – gas, tobacco, etc.? corporations vs. individuals?

Just about any one of these topics can be subdivided into more specific issues.   Some of us may have expertise in these areas. What would be cool is to have people team up and work on a particular issue.  I can set up pages on the wiki for each topic. Just as an example look at the Progressive Democrats of America.  They have just a couple paragraphs describing each of their priorities.  I’m thinking of something along these lines.

People should let me know if they want to work on the wiki and I will set up the pages over there.

Somebody explain it to the simpleton. Please!

Oh… no big words, please. Like “endoplasmicreticulum”. (Is that a word? Did I spell it right? Nevermind…)

  6. Skeleton of a Manifesto

Don’t worry, buhdy, you, me, and others have likewise struggled with this.  I mean, you’re only trying to answer the meaning of life, in the political sense.  No biggie!

This comment on my orange version was pertinent:

“madam sartre, when will jean-paul be free?”

“he’s spent the last 50 years trying to work that one out!”

am I being disturbed during my transformation?

Plato: Sorry to bother you sir, but your friend buhdy is asking for help.  You told me to disturb you in your cocoon if anything of significance occurs … and buhdy  IS your friend … Sir.

Twank: Yes … buhdy … my friend.  Can it wait?

Plato:  I think so sir.  Something about statistics and whatever.  I didn’t take the time to read it all.  But he seems to think it’s important. And that is the essence of friendship, is it not sir?

Twank: Yes … buhdy … my friend.  Deliver a message to buhdy … my friend.  Tell him my transformation goes apace.   I have NOT forgotten him.  I shall emerge with POWER and THEN … we will move forward together.  Tell my friend Buhdy to take heart.

    (pause)

I must sleep now and finish my transformation.  Jan. 1st brings a new dawn … and HOPE!
