VA Victory: Anti-immigrant stance is a loser!

The Washington Post reports that the Virginia Democrats’ ability to take back the State Senate came down to one key race in Fairfax County: Democrat George Barker beat anti-immigrant Jay O’ Brien in the 39th District.

The key to Democratic hopes was secured by Fairfax voters, who reversed control of the Senate by ousting Republican incumbent J.K. “Jay” O’Brien Jr. from his seat in the western part of the county.

Jay O’Brien overplayed the anti-immigrant (anti-Hispanic, “illegal” immigrant) hand and was shown the door.

Below is an e-mail I sent to George Barker last Thursday morning, before the candidates’ debate that evening.

I’m no rocket scientist, but this was a no-brainer, if ever there was one.

Al didn’t kiss my ass…

…but he’s still kickin’ ass:

Gore Rips Media: ‘Don’t Give Equal Time To Someone Who Believes The Earth Is Flat’
This morning, former vice president Al Gore appeared on NBC’s Today Show to talk about global warming. Host Meredith Vieira brought up a Nov. 1 Wall Street Journal op-ed by climate skeptic John Christy, a former member of the IPCC. In the op-ed, Christy wrote, “I see neither the developing catastrophe nor the smoking gun proving that human activity is to blame for most of the activity we see.”

When Vieira asked about the op-ed, Gore noted that Christy “no longer belongs to the IPCC” and is “way outside the scientific consensus.” He also sharply criticized the media for giving so much air time to such climate skeptics:

But, Meredith, part of the challenge the news media has had in covering this story is the old habit of taking the on the one hand, on the other hand approach. There are still people who believe that the Earth is flat, but when you’re reporting on a story like the one you’re covering today, where you have people all around the world, you don’t take – you don’t search out for someone who still believes the Earth is flat and give them equal time.

Dear Al, Kiss My Ass.

“You talkin’ to me?”

Yeah, you, Mr. Gore.

Kiss my ass.

I’ve had it with you. You’re nothing but a cock-teaser.  Your shit is bogus, and you are dead to me now.

You just sent me your last “Dear Tom” letter.  I just hit the “unsubscribe” button.

Hey Kids, Happy Halloween! Trick or Treat? …

Only an hour-and-a-half left for trickin’ ‘n treatin’ here on the least coast, and I didn’t want to let the opportunity pass to give you a little treat for All Hallows Eve.  (Tomorrow bein’ All Saints Day, ya know.)

Anyhoo, with all the righteous (and right, IMHO) criticism bein’ put out by Armando and others about Barak Obama’s in-house gaydar-detector preacher, I wanted to share a couple of links.

Message to Al: Jump In or Drop Out!

Just got this e-mail from Democracy for America:

  Dear Thomas,

Our challenge to Al Gore: Jump In or Drop Out!

Something surprising is happening at Democracy for America; former Vice President Al Gore is leading the race for the DFA Presidential endorsement — as a write-in candidate.

Voting is still open until November 5 at midnight, and there is plenty of time for any candidate to win. All your candidate needs is your vote right now:

http://www.Democracy…

Despite the fact that Al Gore has not announced that he will run and wasn’t even included in the endorsement poll, DFA members have seized the power and written him in. With over 65,000 votes cast so far, the time has come for Vice President Gore to make a decision.

The clock is ticking. We are deep into the 11th hour. There are fewer than 90 days until the first votes are cast. And filing deadlines to be on the ballot start closing in just days.

You deserve to know. Is Al Gore in or out?

Together, we are the boots on the ground that knock on doors, make phone calls, and recruit new supporters whether advocating for the next president or electing Governor Howard Dean to Chair the Democratic National Committee.  DFA members are working to take our country back and the DFA endorsement is worth more than just words to the candidate that wins.

Vote for your candidate now:

http://www.Democracy…

Of course, this is not an ordinary endorsement poll. All voters are asked for their top three choices. And in the end, only an announced candidate can win the DFA endorsement. That means this will be the first poll in the nation that can accurately report both the remarkable support Al Gore has in the progressive grassroots AND which announced candidates earn that support if he never jumps in.

When we announce the results on November 6th, one year from Election Day, everyone will be watching.

Don’t keep us waiting, Mr. Gore. It is time for an answer.
