    happy winter to you!

  1. The videos you posted added some welcome levity to the holidays.

I don’t really watch television any more, but very much doubt that there is anything in the present day that can approach “Northern Exposure.”  Although it is supposed to be set in Cicely, Alaska, most of the filming was done in the town of Roslyn, Washington, which is located east of the Cascade Mountain Range (aka the dry side).

It seems that many in the eastern part of Washington State (i.e., east of the mountain passes crossing the Cascades) refer to those on the west/wet side as living on “the coast.” Never mind that from the west side of Snoqualmie Pass to the Pacific Ocean is a 170 mile drive.

The Brick Tavern, run by Holling and Shelley in the series, was still in operation when I passed through a few years ago (the moose passes by the side of this building during the opening credits). I stopped in for a few minutes and during a brief visit to the men’s room, couldn’t help but notice graffiti scrawled on the wall, conveying the advice: “Coasties go home!” Needless to say, the eastern and western parts of the state are like two entirely different worlds.

Here is another interesting winter holiday clip from “Northern Exposure” — Chris’ sign-off from his radio program…
