Pique the Geek 20100627: Near Light Speed Space Travel

I apologize for not including a post last week, but I suffered from a large amount of lack of motivation.  You see, this was the first wedding anniversary in 33 years on which the former Mrs. Translator and I were not wedded.  I poured out my heart the previous Friday night here, and was drained.

Saturday I went to the mailbox and found a parcel from her.  She had sent me one of the most authoritative and scholarly works about the American Civil War (I still have problems with the name of the war, because it was not, by definition, a civil war, but I am coming to understand that my previous preferred title, The War between the States, is quite inaccurate as well).  In addition to the wonderful book she sent a card that touched me, in a good way, so much that I guess that I was dumbstruck.  I will never mention anything about the contents of that card except to say that it was likely the most touching thing that I have known in many years, and the telephone conversation that followed made it even more so.

G20 Police Attacking Journalists

The Real News Network’s Jesse Freeston and other journalists attacked by police during what began as peaceful street demonstrations at the G20 Summit in Toronto…

News from Africa

 Zimbabwe

Rotting food scraps picked out of the dirt and the bins of the backstreets of Harare are piled together in a slimy heap on the ground with torn cardboard as a serving plate. Elias, 15, squats and pushes both hands into the pile, scooping out a chunk of something pink. He gnaws on it, then shouts: “Dinner! Come and eat.”

At the Makumbi children’s home, half an hour’s drive from the city, Sister Alois is upset to report she has had to turn away three abandoned babies brought in by social workers in the last week. “More and more children abandoned, it’s not the African way. There are so many now. They are being left in the bush, some are eaten by the ants.”

“When you walk through the markets, you can see that there is food here. The problem is that the ability to buy it has disappeared. People here depend on livestock to support themselves, but animals are being killed on the edge of exhaustion, and that means they are being sold for far less money. And on top of that, the cost of food basics has risen,” explained Gluck.

“Yesterday I saw women sifting through gravel at the side of the road, trying to find some grains that may have been blown from aid trucks.”

Ok, Now Look….

Everything is getting really blurry now and nothing makes any fuckin’ sense any more.

War is Peace now, poor is rich, the Gulf is a never ending domestic supply of oil that will get us off the foreign oil habit, and everything else is upside fuckin’ down too. Or backwards or inside out, at least.

And it’s anybody’s bet how long this planet is going to keep letting us do the shit we do before it deals with us seriously.

And it is still the weekend, after all.

Maybe it’s just time to get back to basics. 😉

At present, oil saturates the Gulf Stream.  An official six-month cessation of permits for new drilling did not actually affect the industry or government decisions.  Despite Moratorium, Drilling Projects Move Ahead.  To explain such an authorization and waiver, the Department of the Interior and the Minerals Management Services Division which regulates drilling, pointed to public statements by Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar.  He did not intend to forbid all first cuts in the Earth’s crust.  Absolutely not.  The Federal Government approved wells off the coast of Louisiana in June. Regardless of the day, or realities that are anathema to our citizenry, little has truly changed.  Today, just as in yesteryear, we, the people of the United States of America, in order to form a more perfect Union, polish policies to appear as though our civilization would wish to protect and defend all beings, equally.

On Really Padding The Résumé, Or, “Vote For Me! I Died In Viet Nam”

We have already seen some impressive efforts in this campaign season to do a bit of résumé padding, particularly as it regards things military; so far Illinois’ Mark Kirk has managed to turn himself into a kind of camouflage Austin Powers, while Connecticut’s Richard Blumenthal’s trying to catch up with some “Vietnam” service of his own that no one else in the theater of operations exactly knew about.

But now, in the race for Alabama Governor, we may have seen something that takes us to a whole new level of “inflation”: the Republican candidate is running an ad that not only suggests that he served in Vietnam…it seems to imply that he actually died there, and has now come back to save the State.

Which is some serious irony indeed, considering that the candidate is actually a medical doctor.

And with that, let me introduce you to the either living…or undead…Dr. Robert J. Bentley.

National PTSD Awareness Day Arrives

This is going to be short.

Meant to inform of this day, to send you to one extremely dedicated individuals own post, to hopefully send some to search out even more {if you haven’t followed the real issues}, for the trolls who won’t see these issues on conservative blogs or news? sites, and we probably won’t hear a peep on any of the Sunday Morning empty blab shows or news outlets.

If you are gay, you are my brother.

If you are lesbian, you are my sister.  If you are transgendered, then you are my brother or sister depending on what X or Y you prefer to identify with, or my sibling human.

It really is just that simple.  This is above and beyond your partisanship.  If you are a Log Cabin Republican, I embrace you.  If you are an A List gay, and the HRC is your bread and butter, I might disagree with you and your tactics, I might even call you craven, but I embrace you nonetheless.

And, please, forget whatever else I have maybe said in the distant (or not so distant, I evolve quickly in blog-time) past.  Because, to find something different in anything I have said, you would have to reach back, years in time.  Or maybe just A year.  Hah.  Like I said, we evolve quickly in blog time.  And this is not just during gay pride month.

I have heard pride talk and yearnings, and intellectualizations about oppression.

It is to be said, if you are my republican gay brother, some among us would not want to piss on you if your hair was on fire.

I might have been one of those who said this.

I take it back.

Because of this.  If we are to evolve in the gay community, beyond our mutual oppression, then we have to form a mutual solidarity.

Gay pride is more than about just pride.  It is more than about seeing, in a metaphorical sense, in the gay community, whose sexually stimulative parts are bigger.

It is also about power.  The power, as a small minority of people, to get some control of our lives and push back against the forces arrayed against us.

And, there has been some rumbling about whether the fights we are having are worth having, or are instead oppressing other people within the broad spectrum that is the LGBT community.

But, here’s the thing.

I wish for you to have all the options open to you that heterosexual society offers.  This is not surrender, or mainstreaming, or assimilation.

It is options, and working toward the day when the broader society sees us as nothing but people.  That is all.

And to have options, we as a community have to get over our bitchiness, our self important sense of alienation from one another, and to, with great consternation and difficulty, learn to accept EACH OF US as we are.

I dislike, as a general rule, bootlickers.  I don’t want, or like, people who lick the boots of people who wish to hold us back or oppress us.

This is why (again, as a general rule), I find it very difficult to accommodate gay people who, for whatever reason, find it preferable to foment irrelevant argumentation, or spurious support of people who might not always have our best interests at heart.

Hurricanes to Shut Down Oil Gather 10 days each, and Baby Dolphins Cry

It is hurricane season in the Northern Atlantic Ocean.

When the storm winds hit a mere 40 mph, the “floating city” of BP’s oil collection and flare off ships in the Gulf of Mexico has to shut down.  They need 4 days in advance to do this, and find safe harbor.  This is according to Admiral Thad Allen.  They will need 4 days to set back up.  The total number of days that the oil from the wreck of the Deepwater Horizon can spill freely into the Gulf during a short, 2 day tropical storm, is therefore 10 days.

Guess what.

Alex is a tropical storm.

By Tuesday, Alex could be a hurricane.

Alex is heading west right now.

Alex could then swing north.
