Deepwater Horizon Oil Leak to Loop Current Forecast – May 17 through May 21, 2010

(11 am. – promoted by ek hornbeck)

Video compiled from data produced by The College of Marine Science, University of South Florida, Ocean Circulation Group http://ocgweb.marine.usf.edu/

OCG/CMS/USF maintains a coordinated program of coastal ocean observing and modeling for the West Florida Continental Shelf (WFS).

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill trajectory ensemble forecast from four different numerical models – Modeling includes a West Florida Shelf version of ROMS nested in the Navy’s operational HYCOM. We are also diagnosing model output from the Navy’s HYCOM, from NCSU’s SABGOM ROMS, and also from the NOAA RTOFS.

of the 27 images in the oil spill trajectory ensemble forecast from four different numerical models animation produced by OCG/CMS/USF, plus a google earth satellite view from May 17 of the Gulf with the oil visible moving into the loop current.

With some recent indications that new data might possibly be being blacked out by the government (hat tip to TMC), I thought this might be handy for people to embed on blogs.

  1. So why the fuck approve these deep wells?

The Coast Guard commandant, Adm. Thad Allen, said that despite the siphoning, the spilled oil is spreading and now stretches from western Louisiana to Florida’s Key West. The extent of the spill was straining even the substantial resources deployed for one of the worst ecological disasters in recent history, he said.

Allen said the approximately 20,000 people now working to prevent the spill from reaching land were struggling to deal with an environmental threat that he called “omni-directional and almost indeterminate” in size. He said federal disaster plans had been formulated to deal with far more localized spills.

“We’re dealing with something that’s more complicated than any spill I’ve ever dealt with,” Allen told the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. “The national system did not contemplate that we would have to do all of this at once.”
