Depose A Dharmanian!

{Editors note: Having found a proper alliteration, I will now be pub’ing this series at DD as well as dkos. Including ponies fro anyone who answers the questions. Rejoice!?!}

Docudharma is a small community of very smart (albeit funny looking) people. We may not have all the answers, but we certainly are witty and crafty enough to reply in an amusing fashion! So if you have a question, whether snarky, simple, political or philosophical, be it meta, meaty, maddening or impossible to answer,….what the hell? Post it here and see what happens! You have nothing to lose but your underwear! Heck, there is a chance it might even get answered, possibly even correctly!

Any questions?

What?

Still?

PLEASE REMEMBER, THIS IS A  COOPERATIVE EFFORT!!! MAKE SURE YOU TRY TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS WHILE YOU ARE HERE!!!

BTW 42 is NOT the meaning of life, my favorite color is blue, no,  green (I’m still here!), and tying fruit of any kind to swallows is indicative of a very peculiar and rare psychosexual disease….seek help! While speculating on the airspeed of UNLADEN swallows is a far milder form….I still urge you to examine your soul!  For those who have no idea what I am talking about I urge YOU to …Depose A Dharmanian!

                                                     What Now?

There is no question that there are many many moral people in the world. For morality at its deepest root is a feeling inside of each individual. A feeling that cannot be fully put into words. But since it cannot be put into words, that feeling has proven to be highly manipulable. It is subject to propaganda and emotion, it is subject to confusion. As we see the strife around the world and hear all of the various sides argue their cases, …..

Tonight’s First Question: How do we decide what is and is not moral?

Tonight’s Second Question: IS there a standard definition of morality?

Tonight’s Third Question: Is that definition subject to change?

Tonight’s Fourth Question: How?

Tonight’s Fifth Question: Who decides?

Tonight’s Sixth Question: Is there anyway to establish a planetwide definition of morality that beneficially crosses all boundaries of religion and philosophy?

Tonight’s Random Answer: Each human life is sacred no matter the circumstances.

Tonight’s Silly Question: How do we get from the awful here….to the utopian there?

Oh and speaking of morality….you can help restore a bit of it (unless of course you believe torture is moral) by…

One first step is….

Signing The Citizens Petition: Special Prosecutor for Bush War Crimes.

Joining the Facebook Group.

And going to Change.gov to support having this question answered.

“Will you appoint a Special Prosecutor – ideally Patrick Fitzgerald – to independently investigate the gravest crimes of the Bush Administration, including torture and warrantless wiretapping?”

How do we decide what is and is not moral?

Throw a virgin into a volcano.  If it doesn’t erupt, then it is moral.  If it erupts, it is immoral.

IS there a standard definition of morality?

    Yes.  The volcano.

Is that definition subject to change?

No.  The volcano is very powerful and invincible and thus will not allow change in its moral pronouncements.

    How?

Given it doesn’t change, there is no how.

    Who decides?

    The volcano.

Is there anyway to establish a planetwide definition of morality that beneficially crosses all boundaries of religion and philosophy?

    Already done, dude.  Cf. volcano.

Each human life is sacred no matter the circumstances.

    Agreed without reservation.

How do we get from the awful here….to the utopian there?

Well I intend to prowl there.

How do we decide what is and is not moral?

If you have to ask, the answer is no.

Is there a standard definition of morality?

Not really. Why do you ask?

Is that definition subject to change?

         Change often here?

    How?

          What? Who? When?

    Who decides?

Usually the people with the power.

Is there any way to establish a planet-wide definition of morality that beneficially crosses all boundaries of religion and philosophy?

Yes, but y’all are going to fall asleep long before people get done talking about it.

Each human life is sacred no matter the circumstances.

Each live human what? How about people? How about we talk about what means “person” and what means “human?”

How do we get from the awful here….to the utopian there?

       Process.

  3. “Thou shalt not kill” is a good one, and covered by pretty much all moral codes worldwide.  Funny, isn’t it, that war is not considered the same as murder in those same moral codes.

I don’t have any answers here…except that I don’t really believe in morals: too many religious overtones.  I DO believe strongly in ethical standards.

Wish our outgoing political overlords had a few.

  4. …if there is such a thing as morality as a universal truth, then it is true, in the sense that 2+2=4, and has absolutely nothing to do with “our” deciding.

to find the answer to these questions, grasshopper.  However, I have five minutes before I need to shower and get ready for work.

Tonight’s First Question: How do we decide what is and is not moral?

    Volcano works for me.

Tonight’s Second Question: IS there a standard definition of morality?

No way, Jose.  We can’t even agree on which season is the nicest.

    Tonight’s Third Question:

Is that definition subject to change?

Always.  Only rule worth having is one that can be broken.

    Tonight’s Fourth Question:

    How?   Back to the volcano.

    Tonight’s Fifth Question: Who decides?

Me.  We are only responsible for ourselves.

Tonight’s Sixth Question: Is there anyway to establish a planetwide definition of morality that beneficially crosses all boundaries of religion and philosophy?

Only if we do something really immoral like lock us all up or threaten everyone’s first born.

Tonight’s Random Answer: Each human life is sacred no matter the circumstances.

Not so much.  Some people are too awful too live; and as a species, humans pretty well suck.  If this is the answer, they picked the wrong door.

Tonight’s Silly Question: How do we get from the awful here….to the utopian there?

    Easy, we follow NPK.
