The Misogynist

Raw Story has an excerpt from Cliff Schechter’s upcoming book:

Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain’s intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, “You’re getting a little thin up there.” McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt.” McCain’s excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

Many in the media, and many in the blogs, have revealed a surprising latent misogyny, this campaign season. But McCain could become president. However much antipathy some Democrats may feel for one or the other Democratic candidates, this is the alternative.

  1. …as an explanation, I’ll point out that many people (myself not least among them), regularly use abhorrent and inflammatory language humorously with loved ones.  In other words, I can say from experience that one can use “cunt” towards a girlfriend or partner without offense being taken or meant.  I’m not completely comfortable with drawing inferences from how McCain speaks to his wife to any general attitude.

  2. …clueless about the economy, and about who’s fighting in Iraq and why…and still being given a pass on all those faults plus many others by the MSM “journalists”.

I still am trying to understand why exactly the press keeps coddling “St. McCain”.

Is it because he’s a war “hero”, former POW?  Yet, the press participated in the swiftboating of Kerry, and they didn’t give much respect to veteran Al Gore.   Is it because they, like the ramboishness of McCain, who wrote that he was “excited as hell” at the prospect of flying combat missions during the Cuban missile crisis?  Is it because McCain turns on the charm and sucks up to the press?  (At least he’s “charming” as long as they fawn all over him & don’t ask him the hard questions).

I wish I could understand why they don’t hold his feet to the fire over his insisting that things are getting better in Iraq, while at the same time Americans are being killed in the Green Zone and chaos is erupting all over Iraq.  Or why they don’t dig deeper into why McCain keeps postponing releasing his medical records-first promising to release them in March, then April, now May

“…It was just March 10 – a few weeks ago – when McCain had what he said was a routine doctor’s visit in Phoenix. He told reporters afterwards, “Everything’s fine, everything’s fine,” adding that he’d make a full disclosure on April 15….”

Why don’t they report that McCain voted against the working people and middle class in multiple bills. Or why they don’t report about “Senator McClean’s” cozy relationship with lobbyists, or his Flip-flopping on Campaign Finance Reform .  Why don’t they ask why “war hero” McCain refuses to support the new GI Bill.   Etc, etc, etc.

I also wish I could understand why the Democratic Candidates and the Democratic leadership also seem to be giving “St. McCain” a pass so far.

Do they all really want 4-8 more years of bush in this country?

  3. and ashamed Cindy didn’t pull his hair out right there.

  4. If my significant other called me that in public, or frankly at any other time, I wouldn’t care if they were tired, angry, stressed or any of the above.

Note I am not attempting to “speak for” other women. For me personally, it just isn’t acceptable.

It needs to be removed from the vocabulary. It needs to be removed from the thought process. It has to be done by each of us, internally. The only one who can change you is yourself. And you’re the only one you can change. If you haven’t started yet, now is a good time.

Be nice. Speak kindly. Think kindly.

    Shanti.

  5. Is generally a hateful, angry man. Period. The thought of him near the White House scares me.

Bush was dumb and tried to be nice. McCain is dumb and angry. I will be very, very frighted for this nation if he is in the White House.

  6. Isn’t that the guy who said today that everything in Iraq is going absolutely swimmingly?
