Help! GoDaddy, register.com, someone else, private registration???

I’m finally getting ready to make good on my threat to start a website or three.  (You’ll like them.)  I’d like to know people’s feelings about GoDaddy and other domain name registrars.  Also, how much does DomainsByProxy cost and with whom do they work besides GoDaddy?  Finally, one thing I’m going to want to start is a wiki; does anyone have experience with WetPaint.com, or know of better Wiki-hosting alternatives?

Some of my considerations: I’d like to prepare for the site to grow over time, and to be able to up the bandwidth as it becomes necessary with minimal hassle.  I’d also like advice on how to acquire a template, etc.  These are vague questions, I realize, but that means I can benefit from almost any level of guidance.

…when I want to buy a domain (and host) with privacy. Whois does not reveal the user registration. There is a charge for this. I find it useful at times.

For other domain registration and hosting I use Lunarpages.com for both. Lunarpages is a very good host with great prices and features.

    Good luck.

  1. I use them too for domains, hosting and email.  Have no complaints. Their account managment interfaces are fairly intuitive and they are quick on the phones if you you have questions and need support.

    Private domain registration

Is $6.95/year.  That’s on top of the $9.99/year for a basic domain name.  If you buy the Hosting at the same time, GoDaddy only charges $1.99 for the 1st year of the domain name.  You can save money by buying 2 or more years in advance.

    Hosting

I have the Economy package, Linux version, for the Dharmapedia. It is about $4/month.  Again you save $ by buying years in advance.  I’m sure you can upgrade easily as you grow your bandwidth.

    Wiki

Dharmapedia is a MediaWiki.  It is Free. I downloaded a copy and installed it without too much trouble.  The GoDaddy hosting package includes the MySQL databases and the PHP server that I needed to configure and run MediaWiki.  I don’t have a lot of experience with wikis but it will come in handy some day.

    Templates

I don’t have a lot of experience with web design either but if you are starting from scratch, you might want to get HTML developer software like DreamWeaver that will have built-in templates.  As you get comfortable working with it, you can tweak the template to your tastes.

Hope this helps…. Let me know if you have any more questions.
