Friday Night at 8: When Fisherman Can’t Go to Sea, They Stay Home and Mend Nets

They do, you know.  Fisherman can’t always go out to sea, bad weather sometimes makes it impossible, among other obstacles.  But they’re always busy, there’s always something to do.

Same can be said of politics, I think.

A year ago I was happy because Democrats took the majority, yay!

Now I’m not so happy because the Democratic leadership is a bunch of damned fools and they’re doing everything but leading (Pelosi’s snark notwithstanding).

So we can’t go out to sea in our lovely ship of state, moving forward like the Progressives we are.

Pfiore8 thinks we should all band together and push Kucinich, bust open all the old paradigms, find new media to replace our present crap, woo hoo!

Armando thinks the netroots should go back to what they were made for, being advocates, not Democratic pushovers, yay!

Buhdy wants a manifesto!

I yearn for social justice to take center stage!

And on and on.  You can add your dreams in the comments, I hope you will.

Well to me those are all nets to mend.  We can’t get diddley squat out of our Democratic leadership.  We do have Progressive dems who we can support, and I believe they are as frustrated and disgusted as we are by what’s going on in their caucus.  The fact that Wexler is now pushing for Kucinich’s impeachment resolution is proof of that.

There’s a hell of a lot we can do to mend nets right now.

I love Daily Kos and I’m not giving up on it.  I think there are plenty of folks there who feel as we do, even some of the FP’s.  I think it is worthwhile debunking the bullshit, as Armando did with Major Danby’s peon to the Dem establishment.  I think it is worth going to a site where thousands both read and post and try to win hearts and minds.

I also think there’s many many lefty blogs out there, small ones, whose ideas and thoughts are well worth seeking out.  Why duplicate our efforts if we can find even better ideas out in blogland than we could think up?  I think that’s worthwhile, too.

The media sucks!!!  Anyone who can work on a plan to bypass them, well that’s a worthwhile thing to do.

All of these things will bring people together.  I won’t discount any of them … nor will I discount anything else brought to the table.  The more the merrier!

When fishermen can’t go out to sea, they stay home and mend nets.  Those nets will ultimately catch a lot of fishies.  I think we need a whole bunch of nets.  And, pun intended, ain’t that what the netroots can be?

  1. … a pair of them fishnet stockings.  And just you wait to see the catch I get!

  2. It’s who we are and what we do.

What is specifically freer here than some other places is criticism of the Democratic Party and sources and modes of expression.

and there is comfort in the idea of mending things

what i would like to push is that Kucinich is electable… not endorse him. not give away that much. but that nobody should be precluded from considering a candidate defined by others as marginal. we’ve had enough of that bullshit.

but i think it could be a mind-blowing approach … it isn’t about voting for dennis, but not letting the media or pundits or other candidates define him

power the voters to define him and all the others

just like we oughta debunk that Hillary is the defacto nominee

before i let these bastards walk away with the world, i think we ought to give them a tougher run for their money and out think them, out play them, and go for it… have fun with it… act like we have nothing to lose

cause if we don’t find a way to exert our power, we will lose imo

  3. is just a first step….something to rally folks around, and help define us so we can gather other like minded folk in figuring out he NEXT step….implementation.

You are right, it is the perfect thing to do ….for me…during this time of net mending.

    Great analogy.

Soon we will be casting the next net and we will see what we haul in!

  4. parties or silly hats. Aren’t those essential to the formation to manifestos and grassy roots movements?
