Can’t make this stuff up: Chinese toys tainted w/date-rape drug (updated)

Canadian Press is reporting that the popular toy known as “Aqua Dots” in the U.S. and “Bindeez” in Australia has been pulled off the shelves because of a coating chemical, when ingested, metabolises into the “date-rape” drug: GHB (gamma hydroxy butyrate).

A popular Chinese-made children’s toy is being pulled from Canadian store shelves over worries that a similar toy sold in Australia contains a chemical that converts into a powerful “date rape” drug when swallowed.

[Update] The U.S. is recalling Aqua Dots, as well, after reports of 2 children in comas after ingesting the beads:

Two U.S. children went into comas after who swallowing Chinese-made Aqua Dots found to contain a chemical that converts into ‘date rape’ drug when ingested.

More below the jump.

Like I said, you can’t make this stuff up.

Aqua Dots (beads) work by connecting together when sprayed with water, another way the GHB chemical can travel, via kids’ wet hands.   If you have children and they have Aqua Dots or Bindeez, get those beads away from them fast.

  2. warfare? WTF? Can we be any stupider? I’m stealing from the Rude One but in a way it seems ironic that all for the love of cheap shit, give it to me, we are ingesting and inhaling and swathing ourselves in, the evil we have allowed, cause we like our stuff cheap and dirty! Bring on the slaves, whoops this is toxic who would have thought it ! Those nasty slave masters! you get what you pay for.

teens and adults…it would have been popular…maybe even as a prospect for neocons on the prowl….the possibilities are endless…but to waste it on children????? defies logic as you said.

  3. I saw it on the news, and people seem to be reacting to it as if it were lead in the paint.  This new story seems to be about the equivalent of saying that the toys were laced with LSD or heroin.  Not only that, now we know that this drug, that can be used for harm, is now out there, rolling around in toy boxes, and cracks in the floor across the country.  It’s like having an opium den in every kitchen.  This really scares me.  Where are all these little beads going to go now?  Seriously.  This sounds like a huge problem.  Or am I over-reacting?

  4. We are heading into Christmas and I think that only reduced consumer buying power not consumer consciousness will account for any dip in toy spending.

I am not doing a wholesale trash the consumer rant, there are so few alternatives for parents and clever marketing will shape the kiddies who are innocents in all of this.

Yes, Virginia, you really can buy yourself to death. How many times will this have to happen?
