Birth of The Zen Dictator

Preamble: Aaarh! Blast and bloody damn this eyepatch itches and that scurvy parrot has shat on my doublet again!

.

It has been a week since we launched Docudharma. So far, everything is perfectly out of control. There have been incidents and accidents and hints and allegations. Chaos has reigned. So far we have avoided rains of frogs, but I haven’t had a chance to see tomorrows forecast, having been busy with the aforementioned chaos.

Only one thing is completely certain so far: I am far too nice and sweet of a guy to be in the blogging trade.

And even that is not true! It is more accurate to say that I would PREFER too be too nice and sweet of a guy to be in the blogging trade.

I do have an inner asshole. And apparently it is time to air my inner asshole out a bit.  …..ewwww

By nature I am an idealistic, optimistic utopian. By night I visit the fields where the lambs lay sleeping and…..but I digress.

In the excitement of the launch I was overwhelmed, over excited and sleepless. This is of course all unchartered water for me. Things have not gone as I have wished. I would say that the mistakes that I have made are far more in the WAYS things were done than what was done. And that responsibility lies with me. No excuses.

So I have to fix some stuff. Learn and grow, learn and grow.

I have mentioned before that I am relatively new to the internet, so I am also naive. I hoped we wouldn’t have to deal with some of the nastier and more contentious shit that goes on on the net. I was wrong. I thought that most all of the people who were assholes on blogs had good reasons for that and were misunderstood and that a fresh start would give everyone a chance to put aside old grudges and habits and find a new way to coexist, all working together in good faith for the common good. I was wrong.

So… during this sensitive launch period it looks like I might have to be way more of the Dictator part of the zen dictator mentioned in the FAQ as the ideal. I don’t like that….so it will only make me crankier. Grrrr.

First of all, until we can figure out a way to talk about it in a productive way….I/P diaries are banned.

Who determines what an I/P diary is?

Me.

I thought having someone who knew the issue running it would work….But what I learned is that nobody in that world trusts anybody else….. so that won’t work, nothing seems to work. So ……voila.

You can write about Palestine and you can write about Israel…but you can’t write I/P diaries. Anyone who is involved in the issue knows what I mean by I/P diaries.

You are HIGHLY encouraged to write diaries on how we and other blogs should approach the issue of how to talk about I/P without all the….stuff. Until we can learn HOW to talk about it I don’t think we can really TALK about it. I/P isn’t going to be solved here anyway, but with the folks we have here we might be able to make some progress on that fron….without all the……stuff.

I will be suspending the three comment rule and notification rule on banning for a while. Nobody who is here at this time is practicing assholery. (Although some of the worst pirate talk comes close…THAT WAS A JOKE!) But until things calm down a bit. I am not going to be shy about getting rid of habitual assholery practitioners.

If you are not a notorious assholery practitioner, you need not worry. You won’t notice anything different because the notorious assholery practitioners will unapologetically be gone very swiftly and with very little noise. Something we haven’t really talked about is suspensions. Since we really DON’T want to ban, we do have a suspension policy. Mattes for instance was only suspended, after seeing her reactions elsewhere….I am going to extend that suspension until she e-mais me and we can talk. Put it this way if EVER disciplinary action is taken against you, I will always be willing to talk.

Also no one else will perform any administrative or disciplinary activity more severe than hiding comments. Just me. We still don’t have a way to effectively moderate hidden comments yet, so right now there are very few people that can hide comments. If you have not become an EU yet, you won’t. Noy until we solve that problem. I’ll be happy to expand on that in the comments if anyone needs more info.

Very very hopefully things will calm down soon. Or lol, I should say I will calm down soon! This shit is harder than it looks!

Other notes on being The Man:

First….waaaah! When do I get to blog again???

I have stopped giving out nearly all recs on diaries and comments, I want to rec every comment and comment in every diary. But so far I haven’t even been able to read very many! So please don’t be offended if I am not rec’ing you and chatting….things WILL calm down….I hope and I will have time to actually ENJOY this place and even be able to write something besides Meta! I have a lot I want to say here, but I haven’t had the time or the concentration to say it!

I can’t believe the response this place has gotten and I thank you all! I am grateful to all of you , especially for sticking around through all the bumps and bruises of the Difficulties at the beginning. We still have a LOT of Learning and Growing to do, but I think over all, for a bunch of noobs and idiots we are doing ok, if not pretty darn god.

I knew we would attract a whole bunch of good people, but I had no idea that it would attract so many, and of such stellar goodness And hell, a boatload of our Contributing Editors haven’t even published yet! HINT HINT

I especially want to thank all the good people who have dug in and gone into some of the controversial stuff and are working hard on making things better.

The other thing I haven’t had time to do is give out ponies….so if you want one….GRAB IT!

  1. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

  2. I/P diaries are banned.

Does this mean I should not include stories about Israel or Palestine in Four at Four news?

and i loved the opening… sigh

    bravo boss

  3. you will figure it all out and
    everything will be cool.

life is a learning experience if
you stop learning it is because
    you’re dead…lol

I have the hide option but have never
used it.. you can have it back if
you want it.  I am happy with pony and wrong.

I appreciate all your hard work!!

    smooches… I will be lurking….

  4. …but I do think that there has got to be a better way to deal with this, even if I don’t know exactly what it is.  I’d offer to moderate I/P myself, since Shergald never bothered me that much, except I doubt that will give anyone a comforted feeling.

  5. the belches, farts, booboos, owies, and gnashings of teeth that have appeared do  not detract from the early promise shown by this site that you and your team have set up by dint of your individual and collective passion and elbo grease.

    thanks and best regards.

  6. I don’t know anybody well, and am, as mentioned to pfiore8 the other day, a random wag…but following all this, it’s been quite clear from back here in the peanut gallery that you were going to be facing one of those points where loving open community ideals come smack against the nature of messy, squabbling folk.  I love this sort of drama, probably because as a dev. manager, it’s been one of my obsessions for years.  How does one create safe space for people to be themselves and still let them be themselves?  Especially given the tendency of folks to throw themselves against the nearest wall, whatever it might be…

All I can add or say that might be helpful is, this is a possible and hard art.  I don’t think one needs to find one’s inner asshole though, one can act out of true necessity in ways people find hurtful, but be sufficiently clean about it that — while it’s not fun — minimal damage is done.  In fact, I think people remember that clarity and care, and apply it later, to themselves, to others, when they learn (eventually) what it meant and just how hard it is…

    …blessed be.

You know – Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol? Packets? Stuff like that?

And what if I wear a funny hat while writing about it?

    OK… I won’t go that far…

I said it before and I’ll say it again:

    You have my sympathies, buhdy.

(And you really ought to shoo that crow away – he’ll just poo on ya)

thanks for allowing me to essay here.

We had a really bad time a while back on the I/P thing, and I wrote 2 essays that were fairly successful in creating a humane atmosphere for dialogue there.

    Available here and here.

New to blogging then, I am not sure (haven’t reread it in a long while) it will help you in any way, but there it is.

People got to know eachother as humans, and do it a lot nicer now, anyway.

By the way, one day I will scan my appy and post him for you.

    LOVE HORSES.  Ayyyyyyyyyyye ‘skettimonster!

    • robodd on September 20, 2007 at 01:01

    assholes walk the plank!

  7. … to figuring out how to do I/P diaries.

And I am also happy to take my time in this.  I think part of the problem with the bumps in the road was that we felt we had to do something immediately before we even knew what we wanted to do or how we even felt about the situation.  There was a sense of pressure, of “must have answer right now!”

And why?  Why should we not take our time?  Is the I/P conflict going to somehow spiral further out of control because DocuDharma isn’t immediately putting forth a slapdash answer to a problem that I’ve yet to see anyone in the blogosphere solve?

The intertubes can make life seem as though it is swooshing by at the speed of light.  And as you say, past baggage and criticism from both inside and outside can create an appearance of urgency.

Well fuck that.  I am very interested in experimenting with how to discuss the I/P situation without devolving into a flamewar.  I will take my sweet time about this.

Thanks for this essay, Buhdy.  You may not have the answers to everything (yet!), but the bottom line is you are taking responsibility for the nurturing of this site as it moves forward.

Oh, and one more thing.  The blogosphere is noted for “gotcha” bullshit.  I am NOT INTERESTED IN BEING CONSISTENT when we don’t yet know solutions to problems that come up.  I am happy to try this and try that.  We are not politicians running for office, and it is my understanding this is not solely a political blog.

Oh buhdy — you scurvy dog!  Aaaaarrrrrr

  8. Now everyone can get back to a successful dharma-karma bloglaunch after atthattery blip.

    thanks buhdy.

  9. People can discuss how to discuss I/P… but in the end will it make a difference?

    {Maybe we’ll end up having to discuss how to discuss how to discuss I/P issues.}

Ultimately, no matter what people may agree to, people will sometimes be contentious assholes in I/P diaries because that’s the nature of the beast.

I/P is contentious and people will go overboard and get obnoxious and lash out and jump up and down and all the rest.

But to ban I/P is to ban a very, very important set of issues, eh?

Obviously, take your time to think on this, and do as you will, but in the end I/P is just too important to be banned from a blog that deals in politics, imo.

zen dictatorship is a difficult position indeed!

btw, hint received … and am prepping loss of essay virginity.

  10. Thank you for creating this, and I hope you get to have some fun soo

  11. Dictators always have parades with smiling oppressed children singing and waving, and happy peasants extolling the virtues of said dictator. Just sayin.

  12. I have read through the thread here and the thing I wanted to express to you Buhdy and the other Admins is that you have my trust as people. I understand and see the vision of what you want this blog to be. That vision is something I believe to be very worthwhile. I understand we are all humans and know there will be stumbles as you all lay, as we all lay the bricks and stones to make the path walkable.

I think that in time there will be enough of a foundation, that the path will be strong enough, that the site wide trust will be durable enough, that even the issues between Israel and Palestine can be discussed and worked out here.

I think this is a fantastic group of people here.

Thank you for keeping the process open and I hope there will be time for you workerbees to enjoy more than work very soon.

Remember, all work and no play makes Johnny a psycho axe murderer who freezes to death in the topiary! 😀

  13. The ultimate Truth is beyond words. Doctrines are words. They’re not the Way. The Way is wordless. Words are illusions… Don’t cling to appearances, and you’ll break through all barriers…
    ~ Bodhidharma
  14. had a school meeting….and your hints went right over my head anyway…

la dee da dee da  😉

  15. I humbly suggest that anybody who makes political generalizations over an entire people or ethnic group can’t be a progressive. And by “political generalizations”, I mean statements of the form _The X want/did/are to blame for Y_, where X is a nation or ethnic group and Y is some state of affairs of a political nature, i.e., one that in its turn affects a large community of people.

  16. had a school meeting….and your hints went right over my head anyway…

la dee da dee da  😉

  17. sites you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t so FTW and do your own thing.  Often a strained sauce is easier on the toungue than one with bits and chucks still in it.

Marathon blogging will run the risk of brain fart disease, so be sure to take a lot of breaks.

sit 2 polystyrene heads ( Stan and Ollie). When I am not using them Stan wears my lovely comfy Creative Labs headphones and microphone. Ollie, being slightly larger, wears my old steel helmet. I’ve had it 30 years and unlike other items of apparel it still fits where it is supposed to fit.

I keep it there because it was atop my napper through the channel4 forums I/P threadwars of 2005 and 2006. These were a tiresome inconvenience and left many broken hearts and spirits behind them. After the last hostilities of ’06 had subsided a survey of the site took place and the results were disheartening, Such had been the damage to the foundations that mere underpinning was not going to save the edifice. It still stands but is a pale silhouette. Colourless, dry and deathly quiet.

I do have opinions on this issue, however because you are all too dear to me, you’ll see no essays or comments from me. I trust and hope someone will remind me should I ever forget the above.

    • pfiore8 on September 20, 2007 at 03:38

    or is it just me?

  18. Kinda like our pal Buhdy…

Regardless of any complainers, I appear to be having a wonderful time.

Old routine – check whatever blog striked my fancy for the evening.
New routine – check here first.

    Cheers.

around the corner. As I type,  this is the number one rec’d diary over at The Big “Orange Crush”.

    • fatdave on September 20, 2007 at 03:56

then timorous wee post bodies which I wad be laith tae run and chase.

    1. You should present the news exactly as you wish to.

And the TOPIC is not taboo. As as I say write about Israel or Palestine all you want……but not the conflict. And not in an inflammatory way. What does that mean, well that is what we will figure out by writing about how to write about it.

And again….writing about HOW to write about it is encouraged.

I will NOT ban or discipline anyone for trying to gfigur out to do this right….even if someone tries something “experimental” I will cut tons of slack.

We just are NOT going to do this the same way it has been done up to now.

Let’s figure out HOW to do it.

Thanks for the opportunity to expand a bit Magnifico!
