Don Benny Anderson and his nephews, Matthew and Wayne Moore, kidnapped Dr. Hector Zevallos, the Obstetrician Gynecologist I worked for in 1982. Calling themselves the Army of God, they were out to stop abortion. Anderson will be/was released from prison on September 11th, 2007; he will be living an hour and a half away from our clinic. 1982 was a frightening year for The Hope Clinic for Women, where I continue to work. Saturday, January 23rd, the day after the 9th anniversary of legal abortion everywhere in the U.S., I got a late night phone call from our then director asking me to alert our staff the clinic was on fire.

Convicted anti-abortion terrorists Don Benny Anderson, and brothers Matthew Moore and Wayne Moore, were supposed to be released from jail and into a halfway house yesterday, September 11, 2007. It has been confirmed that he was released as scheduled. Don Benny Anderson was convicted in 1982 of kidnapping the owner of an abortion clinic and his wife in Illinois. The doctor was forced at gunpoint to make an audio recording urging then President Reagan to oppose abortion, even though Reagan already did. After 8 days in fearful captivity, the couple were released unharmed, but have remained relatively low profile since then. Anderson was scheduled to be released yesterday from Federal Prison into a halfway house near the clinic after spending 24 of his 30 year sentence in jail. The infamous Army of God claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Perennial GOP presidential candidate Alan Keyes has announced that he is running again — and will appear next week at the Values Voters Summit that the GOP front-runners have declined to attend. Keyes, who has a long history of bringing religious rightists to their feet with cheers, applause and shouted amens, will add more than racial color to the all white GOP primary line-up. While Keyes never captures the votes that one might expect given the emotional responses he elicits, he brings fire to the field at a time when there is considerable speculation as to whether the once mighty values voters are losing interest in the GOP.

Prior to meeting me she had told a clinic counselor that she was the president of her campus “pro-life” organization. Think about that. A lot of people say they’re sick of constantly hearing about that issue. They’re tired of the same old arguments repeated ad nauseum. They’re turned off by the “extremists” on both sides who want either all or nothing. They’re frustrated by the yawning chasm between pro-choice and anti-choice views that can never be bridged. They’re sick of abortion, period. I mean, who wants to think about abortion anyway, or even say the word out loud? It’s all so “icky.”
