It all comes together, right here.

Go give dday some love....

We Tortured To Justify The War In Iraq - Let That Settle In

And yes, settling in is the stage we are at. We have the motive, which gives us "the narrative." Now it just has to penetrate the national consciousness....and, if there still is one, the national conscience.

This is a simply stunning war Crime, on every possible level.

We tortured to get false confessions to use as a rationalization to illegally invade Iraq when there was NO reason to, and....it worked. The lies worked.

I will say it again, short of all out genocide, there is just nothing that defines evil more than what they did. It simply cannot be allowed to stand. We simply cannot 'move forward' without addressing it.

Joe Conason sums it up in one paragraph, as part of a great piece.

Yet evidence is mounting that under Cheney's direction, "enhanced interrogation" was not used exclusively to prevent imminent acts of terror or collect actionable intelligence -- the aims that he constantly emphasizes -- but to invent evidence that would link al-Qaida with Saddam Hussein and connect the late Iraqi dictator to the 9/11 attacks.

And he ends it with the stark truth....

Cheney now claims that he preserved the country from terrorism and saved thousands and perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives. We need a serious investigation, with witnesses including the former vice-president under oath, to determine what he and his associates actually did with the brutal powers they arrogated to themselves -- because instead their actions cost thousands upon thousands of American and Iraqi lives, all in the service of a political lie.

Cheney came into office with the Iraq War already planned out. (4.00 / 4)
The first legislation was passed under Clinton in 1998 - The Iraq Liberation Act.

The Act declared that it was the Policy of the United States to support "regime change." The Act was passed 360-38 in the U.S. House of Representatives [3] and by unanimous consent in the Senate. [4] US President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law on October 31, 1998. The law's stated purpose was: "to establish a program to support a transition to democracy in Iraq." Specifically, Congress made findings of past Iraqi military actions in violation of International Law and that Iraq had denied entry of United Nations Special Commission on Iraq (UNSCOM) inspectors into its country to inspect for weapons of mass destruction. Congress found: "It should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime." On December 16, 1998, President Bill Clinton mandated Operation Desert Fox, a major four-day bombing campaign on Iraqi targets.

President Clinton stated in February 1998:

Iraq admitted, among other things, an offensive biological warfare capability, notably, 5,000 gallons of botulinum, which causes botulism; 2,000 gallons of anthrax; 25 biological-filled Scud warheads; and 157 aerial bombs. And I might say UNSCOM inspectors believe that Iraq has actually greatly understated its production.... Over the past few months, as [the weapons inspectors] have come closer and closer to rooting out Iraq's remaining nuclear capacity, Saddam has undertaken yet another gambit to thwart their ambitions by imposing debilitating conditions on the inspectors and declaring key sites which have still not been inspected off limits.... It is obvious that there is an attempt here, based on the whole history of this operation since 1991, to protect whatever remains of his capacity to produce weapons of mass destruction, the missiles to deliver them, and the feed stocks necessary to produce them. The UNSCOM inspectors believe that Iraq still has stockpiles of chemical and biological munitions, a small force of Scud-type missiles, and the capacity to restart quickly its production program and build many, many more weapons.... Now, let's imagine the future. What if he fails to comply and we fail to act, or we take some ambiguous third route, which gives him yet more opportunities to develop this program of weapons of mass destruction and continue to press for the release of the sanctions and continue to ignore the solemn commitments that he made? Well, he will conclude that the international community has lost its will. He will then conclude that he can go right on and do more to rebuild an arsenal of devastating destruction. And some day, some way, I guarantee you he'll use the arsenal.... President Clinton ~ 1998 [5]

Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Scowcroft - all playing out a long game with Other People's Lives. This link: http://www.historycommons.org/... is worth taking a few minutes to scan. It lays bare the bedrock that was set in place circa 1998 to take over Iraq and use Saddam as the smokescreen for the oil grab.

Gotta admit, it's fun to see Cheney so freaked out about the Truth being known.I'd still like to see the list of attendees and the minutes of the secret energy policy meetings. That may be the golden decipher-ring key.

she stole my show notes (4.00 / 1)
that I scribbled the old fashioned way, on paper, Thursday. A satellite must have picked up me on my deck, writing in the sun.

For this was my conclusion I had come to for Friday's show.

Ah well, great minds and all, I guess I won't sue her this time.

Not only was it a simply stunning War Crime (4.00 / 8)
the invasion of Iraq based on trumped up justifications and false "evidence" produced by torture, resulting in the deaths and maimings of more than one million Iraqis, most of them Iraqi children and women, was premeditated torture of an entire countries population, imo.

The Supreme International Crime

Following the Holocaust, the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg called the waging of aggressive war "essentially an evil thing . . . to initiate a war of aggression . . . is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole."

Yup (4.00 / 7)
Good thing we are having a 'debate' on it.

Funny, I always thought that debate (4.00 / 5)
ended with the convictions and sentencing at Nuremburg?

Maybe I'm too small a thinker, living in only three dimensions?

Let's see if I understand (4.00 / 8)
what happened.

Early 2000 Dick Cheney is asked to find a Vice Presidential candidate and he can't find anyone evil enough so he looks under a few rocks and finds "Dick Cheney".

Everything is going great in early 2001 because GWB was not really elected but got into office anyway, just like he has always "failed upwards" this is just another way for him to wake up on third base thinking he hit a triple.

After a few exhausting weeks of having to show up at "work" every day, GWB goes on a series of vacations, and is too busy clearing brush for the cameras to read the daily briefing about some A-rab that wants to fly jets into buildings.

9-11 changed everything.

Secretary Gates is told to find a link between 9-11 and Saddam Hussein and can't find one.

Ibn Shaikh al-Libi is tortured until he "confesses" that the sky is green, up is down, water is not wet, and by the way - Saddam and Bin Laden are responsible for 9-11.

Iraq suddenly becomes an "imminent threat" to the United States because he has the capability of delivering a payload of chemical weapons 90 miles. Umm, wait - that's a threat to Tel Aviv - don't say shit about how far he can launch stuff, let's just go with less information rather than more.

Lie by lie, they got what they wanted, plundered the economy, and then slithered out to pasture with gobs of blackmail from the NSA wiretaps to ensure they'll not be prosecuted.

Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. Thomas Jefferson 6/11/1807

Add in that (4.00 / 6)
they started torturing before they got 'legal clearance' And they spread torture techniques from Gitmo to Afg. and Iraq....where some presumably innocent people were tortured to death...

And the fact that Cheney made millions off of his Halliburton stock through it all, and yeah, you got it.

Reality is the result of war between two rival groups of programmers,

so....Roar Louder!!!

[ Parent ]
I just can't think of anything more evil than torturing... (4.00 / 5)
to force lies that will bring about an insane and unecessary war.  It's a fucking hat trick of darkness.
