Hagee, Iran, “Theocratic Automatic Fascism,” & A Poem

(I will be returning to writing primarily about American Indian History and its related issues after this diary. Also, this is very long; so get some coffee if you need to or make a pot. It’s long.)

I had the extremely displeasurable experience of playing in an evangelical church after Hurricane Katrina. “This is Spiritual Warfare,” “Homosexuality is an abomination,” and “There is evil in the earth” were spewed like venom.

I got sick and tired of being screamed at, so I grabbed a pencil and some paper and wrote a poem instead of listening to all the hate. I tried to imagine what Jesus might feel like if he really did “come back,” what he might say now, and how he might feel. First though, let’s look at “Hagee, Iran, and ‘Theocratic Automatic Fascism'” after putting Apocalyptic Christianity into a historical perspective.

Native American Holocaust – Sex, Race and Holy War. Excerpts from the book: American Holocaust by David Stannard Oxford University Press, 1992

From the moment of its birth Christianity had envisioned the end of the world. Saints and theologians differed on many details about the end, but few disagreements were as intense as those concerned with the nature and timing of the events involved. There were those who believed that as the end drew near conditions on earth would grow progressively dire, evil would increase, love would diminish, the final tribulations would be unleashed-and then suddenly the Son of Man would appear: he would overcome Satan, judge mankind, and bring an end to history. Others had what is generally thought to be a more optimistic view: before reaching the final grand conclusion, they claimed, there would be a long reign of peace, justice, abundance, and bliss; the Jews would be converted, while the heathens would be either converted or annihilated; and, in certain versions of the prophecy, this Messianic Age of Gold would be ushered in by a Last World Emperor-a human saviour-who would prepare the way for the final cataclysmic but glorious struggle between Good and Evil, whereupon history would end with the triumphant Second Coming.

Trail Of Tears: Moving Beyond The Myth Of America

So before the poem starts, and while the apocalyptic Christians are looking forward to the possible coming strike on Iran

with glee – they should read these words first.

(Matthew 23:15):

Woe to you,—You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when one becomes one, you make him twice the son of hell as you are.

I said it once and I am saying it twice, Send Hagee To Hell: Don’t Let Bush Bomb Iran!

Hagee and his blind flock want human beings to be eliminated, because they are convinced they are being motivated by Satan. Think about it.

John Hagee:

Christian Zionists lobby for US attack on Iran

And the liberal agenda is they are pro-abortion. They’re pro-homosexual. They’re pro-gay marriage – they want men to marry men and women to marry women – and their difference with me is not really what I’m doing with Israel. Their hostility to me is poisoned by their liberalism.
They take a liberal position that poisons their view of what we could be doing for Israel.

Are there more generalized demonizations of liberals within the genre of fundamentalist Christianity?

The liberal media is not only the devil’s best device for corrupting human society; it’s his most diabolical device.

I believe Satan is behind all liberal movements.

Liberals Must Die.com

Liberal Democrat’s Satanic Overlord

These liberals, from Nancy Pelosi’s home, consider morality and religion dangerous. They openly protest and fight against efforts to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, and suicide.

snip-

Who but Satan could run a city and a political party that fights against morality, and specifically considers efforts to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, and suicide “fascist” and dangerous?

Ship of fools: Johann Hari sets sail with America’s swashbuckling neocons

“A few of these prominent liberals who are trying to demoralize the country,” she says. “Just take a couple of these anti-war people off to the gas chamber for treason to show, if you try to bring down America at a time of war, that’s what you’ll get.”
She squints at the sun and smiles. “Then things’ll change.”

‘The Surge Won’t Work, But Concentration Camps Might Do The Trick’

Make no mistake: those means were cruel. I have stated previously that I endorse cruel things in war â?” to eschew them is folly. The British achieved victory over the Boers by taking their women and children away to concentration camps, by laying waste to the countryside, and by dotting the veld with small garrisons in blockhouses at regular intervals.

Read these two excerpts and draw your own conclusions, remembering thatNazi War Criminals came to the U.S. after WWII.Temporarily, substitute the word “Liberal” for the word “Jew” in an effort to draw correlations from past to present. To accentuate, I mean temporarily. These are amongst the most evil words ever spoken. They are from the time of the Jewish Holocaust. Mussolini’s “Doctrine of Fascism” is included afterwards. If the rhetoric of now weren’t so comparable to the rhetoric of then and even glorifying it, then I wouldn’t think it would be appropriate. It is appropriate to today on American soil  in a comparison of the rhetoric only.
There are instances, such as the Rwandan Genocide, in which it is completely comparable. I can’t accentuate enough the spirit of respect and appropriate context in which it must be compared.

Continuing, Hagee himself has implied that it is not “Jews” (“The apple of God’s eye,” he said) who are “poisoned,” it is “liberals” who are “poisoned.” Hagee and those like him are against the ideas of liberalism, and have demonized people with liberal philosophies. The Jewish people overall, he and his blind flock believes, need to be “saved” now, but will be redeemed later. Brace yourself as you read “The Decent Jew” by the Nazi Hanns Oberlindober from the year 1937and the “Doctrine of Fascism” by Mussolini himself from the year 1932.

Despite the sensitivity of the democrats to the world’s moaning and groaning, the warmongering incitement of the so-called world press and the agonized howls of those of your nature and religion, the National Socialist people’s and state leadership has only done its simple duty to the German people, namely to investigate and determine the results and consequences that the “good Germans” and “decent Jews” have left behind for the German people, and to ensure that there will never again be a time of unlimited or concealed Jewish domination.

I say Jewish domination intentionally, for there is no more dreadful tyranny than when world Jews enslave their host people through their willing, bribed, and obedient democratic lackeys.

Fascism is definitely and absolutely opposed to the doctrines of liberalism, both in the political and the economic sphere.

I am not, repeat am not making any irresponsible predictions; however, a military attack on Iran might bring us closer to a fascist state, unique to our time and place, than we already are.

Two key past events that make me consider that we are already closer “to a fascist state, unique to our time and place” are the following.

The first is that a solider stated he would “shoot an American citizen” for “popping around the corner.”  Not so much his specific comment, but the context in which he said it. The red flag to me is, which is what I’m building my argument for the phrase “Theocratic Automatic Fascism” on, is what would have happened to him if he had shot an American citizen? Do we know anything that would indicate to us an answer?

Yes, we do.

Police charged with murdering duo on bridge after Katrina

Seven police officers have been charged with murder and attempted murder for a shooting on a New Orleans bridge six days after Hurricane Katrina that killed two people and wounded four others.

Of course, they denied the charges, yet who knows. The officers could in fact be innocent, pending a full investigation. But, what would have been done about it in our justice system now? This brings me to tragic key event number two.

“Here is an excerpt of one of her last emails to her Mom.”

part 1-rachel corrie american conscience

No US senator attended Rachel’s funeral after her parents brought her home to the state of Washington. Both US senators ran in the opposite direction. Later the Corries disclosed that after their return to the US with their daughter’s body, they contacted their US Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, both Democrats, and told them how their daughter had been deliberately murdered while peacefully demonstrating against house demolitions, which are violations of international law. Murray and Cantwell, the Corries recall, were quick with expressions of outrage and promises of investigations. The Corries never heard from Murray or Cantwell again.

Jerusalem Post Smears Rachel Corrie’s Memory

As we approach March 16, residents and citizens of the United States should ask themselves how it is that an unarmed U.S. citizen can be killed with impunity by a soldier from an allied nation receiving massive U.S. aid, using a product manufactured in the United States by a U.S. corporation and paid for with U.S. tax dollars. When three Americans were killed, presumably by Palestinians, in an explosion on Oct. 15, 2003, as they traveled through Gaza, the FBI came within 24 hours to investigate the deaths. After one year, neither the FBI nor any other U.S.-led team has done anything to investigate the death of an American killed by an Israeli.

Why the double standard? Perhaps this reveals the most disturbing truth of all.

John Hagee and all those trying to force the United States into becoming a “Christian Nation” are attributed to the first part of the phrase, “Theocratic Automatic Fascism” in my argument.

Theocracy.

Theocracy:

A form of civil government in which God himself is recognized as the head. The laws of the commonwealth are the commandments of God, and they are promulgated and expounded by the accredited representatives of the invisible Deity, real or supposed-generally a priesthood. Thus in a theocracy civic duties and functions form a part of religion, implying the absorption of the State by the Church or at least the supremacy of the latter over the State.

To complete the explanation of “automatic,” one must understand the first context in which I use it.

look the other way

look the other way

to ignore something wrong or unpleasant that you know is happening instead of trying to deal with it. When one of their own friends or colleagues is involved in wrongdoing, people sometimes prefer to look the other way.

And now for the final context: automatic (emphasis on “automatic” mine).

Denial
Denial is automatic
; it is not usually a matter of deliberate lying or willful deception. Most dependent people do not know what is true or false concerning their drinking or drug use and its consequences.

I’m not even going to mention the comparison of the above with oil. So…

In order to explain, excuse me while I write the longest sentence I ever have: When Jerry Falwell formed the “Moral Majority,” too many people “automatically” looked the other way; when racial profiling came more into public awareness after the Oklahoma City Bombing, too many people “automatically” looked the other way; when (same link as previous) “Despite promises by President George W. Bush shortly after his taking office to end racial profiling, the number of American ethnic, racial, and religious groups whose members are at high risk of being subjected to this scourge has increased substantially,” too many people “automatically” looked the other way; when the congress passed the Patriot Act under extreme duress and manipulation, too many people “automatically” looked the other way; when the Congress gave Bush the Military Commissions Act and they should have known better, too many people “automatically” looked the other way…I could go on, but when congress  “automatically” looks the other way at the possible and definite deaths and death of it’s citizens by it’s own law enforcement and a foreign country, I think “Theocratic Automatic Fascism” might be an appropriate term in the future, if certain conditions are met. Stay tuned. Now, let’s be realistic in the worst case scenario – Bush declares a national state of emergency.

Everyone, including the American Indian tribes (just try to imagine all of the historical implications of American Indians being disarmed), are disarmed and relocated temporally. Simultaneously, the Clergy would use “Romans 13” to calm people down – maybe Clergy like… John Hagee.

What saves us, is that enough people in the positions of doing the disarming and relocating still remember what it was like before 9-11. Indeed, before the Oklahoma City Bombing. This no prediction, it is just hypothetical.

The line is crossed over to what I’m labeling “Theocratic Automatic Fascism” when there are more people in the positions of doing the disarming and relocating who do not
remember what it used to be like when we had habeas corpus, when desensitization to its loss is greater than the sensitization to its loss.

Continuing, my hypothetical scenario may occur or not occur about the time that we reach the tipping point.

Earth may be near global warming tipping point mongabay.com March 15, 2007

Earth could be reaching a tipping point that could trigger rapid climate change according to scientists studying declining sea ice in the Arctic.

In the face of Manifest Destiny, it seems to me we have two choices: we will either love or fear each other. I don’t think even God knows, to steal a phrase from Joseph Campbell, what choice we’ll make.

What we know from history that we can say with a degree of certainty is that when economic panic is combined with survival needs for natural energy sources; people will relocate, take away from, or kill whoever is in their way – coercively or overtly.

If and only if such hypothetical events occur and the following conditions are met on American soil –

Source

The Anatomy of Fascism:

”A form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.”

– would I conclude to use the phrase, “Theocratic Automatic Fascism,” or any phrase containing “fascism,” or the word itself.

Conclusion and Poem

I sat on my porch in the summer of 2006 smoking my pipe; I had educated myself about the overall Religious Right about as much as I could stand at the time. The thought I had then was and which has stuck with me is, “First they did it to us and now they’re doing it to you.” Had I known that genocide of Jewish People began centuries prior to genocide of American Indians as far as I know, I would have thought different. But my intent is, I don’t want it to happen.

The truth is, maybe it’s a ways off – but the roads and the railroads are being made and laid. However, after the tipping point it very well might be too late.

Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate change will destroy us

Climate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing millions of lives in wars and natural disasters..

Again, I left my crystal ball at home.

By analogy, here is what I see the “roads” and “railroads” are, in addition to what has been stated.

Simultaneously: the war on the courts, the homeschooling movement, the infiltration into the military, the loss of habeas corpus, and the continued loss of civil liberties has accompanied theloss of land and mineral rights for American Indian tribes. Promises to uphold the Constitution of the United States are being broken and have been broken everywhere. We’re all in this together; furthermore, I really believe that we need each other.

The question seems to be, should be expect the unexpected, the expected, or the anticipated? It’s a cliché, but only time will tell. Either way,

Thomas Jefferson:

If our house be on fire, without inquiring whether it was fired from within or without, we must try to extinguish it.

There’s a fire to put out.

The Christian Right and the Rise of American Fascism

Dr. James Luther Adams, my ethics professor at Harvard Divinity School , told us that when we were his age, he was then close to 80, we would all be fighting the “Christian fascists.”

The warning, given to me 25 years ago, came at the moment Pat Robertson and other radio and televangelists began speaking about a new political religion that would direct its efforts at taking control of all institutions, including mainstream denominations and the government. Its stated goal was to use the United States to create a global, Christian empire. It was hard, at the time, to take such fantastic rhetoric seriously, especially given the buffoonish quality of those who expounded it. But Adams warned us against the blindness caused by intellectual snobbery. The Nazis, he said, were not going to return with swastikas and brown shirts. Their ideological inheritors had found a mask for fascism in the pages of the Bible.

– snip –

He saw in the Christian Right, long before we did, disturbing similarities with the German Christian Church and the Nazi Party, similarities that he said would, in the event of prolonged social instability or a national crisis, see American fascists, under the guise of religion, rise to dismantle the open society. He despaired of liberals, who he said, as in Nazi Germany, mouthed silly platitudes about dialogue and inclusiveness that made them ineffectual and impotent. Liberals, he said, did not understand the power and allure of evil nor the cold reality of how the world worked?

“Thirteenth Moon Of The Lamb”

To John Hagee, the Patriarchy,
The K.K.K., &
Apocalyptic Christians:

“Blood from your limbs,
Sap of my trunk.
Crown taken from my cousin,
Tis yours as well.

Near your last hour,
Burning leaves now words –
Storm my breath.

Sit in my fork, O Lamb –
Thy coil hung by men’s fear…
Peer into centuries and cry blood.”

“A girl stares at a square.
Voices come from below the people,
My eyed are hers.

A man in strange robes
Accuses angels of his iniquities,
Declares war against the land.

Only plagues aren’t prejudiced –
Mirrors are invisible to bigotry
Fascists rape children of choice,
Quoting the traitor Paul over me.

Ghosts of dead churches
Whisper scripture to sucklings
Moaning lies about my sacrifice,
Teaching the sword —-
Not the cheek.

Fundamentalists are as fossils,
Unable to alter…
Except by erosion or destruction.

How much more life will perish
Before those fossils erode?
Who breaks their mold by the Word —
Not the sword?

My apostles failed,

Popes and Kings destroyed my teachings and deny them.

War beats in their hearts which loves the root of evil
— This do in remembrance of me

— This do in remembrance of me.”

Blood poured from the eyes of the lamb.

Fork to flesh,
The ghost of The Lamb crawled —
Grief grasped his spirit,
Going from the arm of the tree
To the wet chest of the cross…

New Bin Laden video appears on 9/11 anniversary: CNN
AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A new video purportedly featuring Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden appeared on the Internet Tuesday, the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States, CNN reported.

The video shows a still image of Bin Laden with a voice identified as his praising September 11 hijacker Walid al-Shehri, who was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 which crashed into the World Trade Center, it said.

The authenticity of the video was not immediately confirmed, the television network said, adding that the video did not appear to show any moving images of Bin Laden.

Note- this is a second video, not the one from last week.

Petraeus outlines troop withdrawal plans
By DAVID ESPO, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – The top U.S. general in Iraq outlined plans Monday for the withdrawal of as many as 30,000 troops by next summer, drawing praise from the White House but a chilly reception from anti-war Democrats.

Gen. David Petraeus said a 2,000-member Marine unit would return home this month without replacement in the first sizable cut since a 2003 U.S-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein and unleashed sectarian violence.

Further “force reductions will continue,” he told a nationally televised congressional hearing that was frequently interrupted by anti-war protesters.

Study questions comeback of gray whale
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer
1 hour, 36 minutes ago

PALO ALTO, Calif. – One of the great success stories of the ocean, the return of the Pacific gray whale, may have been based on a miscalculation, scientists reported Monday in a study based on whale genetics.

What was assumed to be a thriving whale population actually is at times starving from a dwindling food supply, said study co-author Stephen Palumbi, a Stanford University marine sciences professor. And global warming is a chief suspect.

Scientists may have underestimated the historical number of gray whales from Mexico to Alaska, according to the study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. And that may have led to a misdiagnosis of what is behind surprising die-offs over the past few years and the appearance of many so-called “skinny” whales.

Japan counts down to lunar probe launch
By Teruaki Ueno, Reuters

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan is preparing to launch this week its first lunar explorer, in a bid to get the country’s space program back on track after a string of failures in the last decade.

Japanese scientists are also hoping the project will keep them one small step ahead of China and India, both of which are also planning lunar missions.

They say the 55 billion yen ($484 million) project to launch the three-tone Kaguya, also known as the Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE), is the world’s most technically complex mission to the moon since the U.S. Apollo program decades ago.

Pakistani press slams Sharif deportation
AFP

ISLAMABAD (AFP) – Pakistani newspapers Tuesday criticised President Pervez Musharraf for deporting former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, warning the move would push the South Asian nation further towards chaos.

Sharif, ousted by military ruler Musharraf in 1999, was sent back into exile in Saudi Arabia Monday, four hours after what was supposed to be a triumphal return to his homeland.

“Nothing worse can possibly happen to Pakistan (than) what General Musharraf-led military regime did on Monday,” said a comment piece in The News, a respected English-language daily.

9 GIs die in Iraq, military reports
By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer
Mon Sep 10, 8:43 PM ET

BAGHDAD – The U.S. military reported the deaths of nine soldiers Monday – including seven killed in a vehicle accident – and Iraq’s prime minister said the nation’s armed forces were not ready to fight without American help.

The statements – more Pentagon death notices and appeals for more time from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki – echoed some of the key struggles in Washington as lawmakers began long-awaited hearings on U.S. strategies in Iraq.

Among the core issues is whether Iraq’s leadership is moving fast enough at political reconciliation and assuming security responsibilities while U.S. troop deaths have risen to at least 3,772 in the 4 1/2-year war.

Dozens dead in Mexico truck crash and blast

NADADORES, Mexico (Reuters) – A tractor-trailer loaded with explosives blew up in Mexico on Monday after a traffic accident, creating a huge fireball that killed dozens, including rescue workers and photographers.

People stuck in the traffic jam caused by the accident were also killed in the blast that left a crater 65 feet wide and 9 feet deep near the town of Nadadores in the northern state of Coahuila, witnesses and officials said.

“There were body parts scattered in the trees,” said Paulina Luna, 62, a local resident who was evacuated to a shelter. Her brother’s home was flattened. “The house was swept from the earth as if it never existed,” she said.

Latest bombing of Mexican pipelines heightens fears of energy disruption
By Kevin G. Hall, McClatchy Newspapers
Mon Sep 10, 7:18 PM ET

WASHINGTON – Bombers attacked at least six oil and natural gas pipelines in Mexico’s southeastern state of Veracruz overnight on Monday, sparking concern that the energy sector of the second largest supplier of oil to the United States may be increasingly vulnerable to attacks from a fledgling Marxist rebel movement.

The bombings, the second such series in as many months, happened at opposite ends of the oil-rich state, suggesting that the assailants had the capability to strike multiple targets at will.

Monday’s assaults struck critical shear valves, which control the flow of natural gas, oil or liquefied petroleum gas. Video on Mexican television showed thick black smoke rising above the green tropical lush of the state of Veracruz.

Intelligence officials contradict White House on bin Laden
By Jonathan S. Landay, McClatchy Newspapers
Mon Sep 10, 5:28 PM ET

WASHINGTON – Contradicting President Bush ‘s counter-terrorism adviser, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement chiefs and a Cabinet member said Monday that Osama bin Laden remained the most dangerous terrorist threat to the United States six years after the 9-11 attacks.

Eliminating the threat that the al Qaida leader and his inner circle pose from their sanctuary in Pakistan’s remote tribal region bordering Afghanistan “is our number one priority,” Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell told a Senate committee.

The assessments by McConnell, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and FBI Director Robert Mueller came a day after White House homeland security adviser Frances Fragos Townsend called bin Laden “a man on the run from a cave who is virtually impotent other than these tapes.”

What Crocker and Petraeus didn’t say
By Nancy A. Youssef and Leila Fadel, McClatchy Newspapers
Mon Sep 10, 8:34 PM ET

WASHINGTON – The Bush administration’s top two officials in Iraq answered questions from Congress for more than six hours on Monday, but their testimony may have been as important for what they didn’t say as for what they did.

A chart displayed by Army Gen. David Petraeus that purported to show the decline in sectarian violence in Baghdad between December and August made no effort to show that the ethnic character of many of the neighborhoods had changed in that same period from majority Sunni Muslim or mixed to majority Shiite Muslim.

Neither Petraeus nor U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker talked about the fact that since the troop surge began the pace by which Iraqis were abandoning their homes in search of safety had increased. They didn’t mention that 86 percent of Iraqis who’ve fled their homes said they’d been targeted because of their sect, according to the International Organization for Migration .

Iran’s Romance of Nicaragua
By SIOBHAN MORRISSEY/MIAMI, Time Magazine
54 minutes ago

Nicaragua, the Central American nation noted for its connection to Iran during a political scandal two decades ago, is coming under fresh scrutiny for its ties to Tehran. Back in the ’80s, Oliver North and members of the Reagan administration found themselves embroiled in controversy for selling arms to Iran and illegally funneling the profits to the anti-Communist rebels know as the contras, who were fighting the regime of Daniel Ortega. Now Ortega is once again president of Nicaragua – and apparently forging new ties with Tehran.

The Nicaragua-Iran embrace includes four significant events since Ortega took office as the democratically elected leader of his country last January. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to the Nicaraguan capital Managua to personally congratulate Ortega days after his Jan. 10 inauguration. Then Ortega borrowed a jet from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to visit Iran in June. Two months later, Iran and Venezuela pledged $350 million to build a seaport near Monkey Point on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast. (Tehran has also been cultivating an alliance with oil-rich Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez.) And last Wednesday, the Nicaraguan foreign minister returned from Tehran, where he met with the foreign ministers of Syria, Cuba and Iran. There is now speculation that Nicaragua may support Tehran’s bid for a seat in the U.N. Security council.

Petraeus Can’t Heal the Iraq Divide
By MARK THOMPSON / WASHINGTON, Time Magazine
16 minutes ago

General David Petraeus came to Capitol Hill Monday with the weight of history on his four-starred shoulders. Not since April 29, 1967, when General William Westmoreland tried to sell the Vietnam War to a querulous Congress, has a military officer’s testimony been so freighted with import for the nation’s military, its foreign policy, and its place in the world for the coming generation. And like Westmoreland before him – as one Democratic congressman even noted during the hearing – Petraeus appeared as a marked-down commodity, his prescription for the future in Iraq already scrutinized – and discarded – by Democrats who see him increasingly as a shill for the White House.

In a six-hour-plus session before the House armed services and foreign affairs committees, even his call to begin pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq later this month was insufficient to quell Democratic anger over the war’s prosecution. His uniform and beribboned chest offered scant protection from lawmakers who have concluded that the war is already lost, or at best, stalemated, and isn’t worth more U.S. blood and treasure.

The hearing was a kaleidoscope of conflicting claims. Democrats warned of continued U.S. deaths, a continued drain on the Treasury, and a threadbare U.S. military if the war continued. Republicans raised the threat of a resurgent al Qaeda and a loss of national honor and might if the U.S. withdraws before the job is done. Petraeus spoke of what a good customer Iraq has become for U.S. weapons, while Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq testifying alongside Petraeus, warned that Iran’s power and influence would grow if the U.S. abandons Iraq prematurely. But the bottom line seemed clear: Majority Democrats haven’t coalesced around a single option to brandish against the White House’s conduct of the war. In the wake of Monday’s hearing – and a pair slated before the Senate on Tuesday – it appears likely that there will be no major change in U.S. policy in Iraq until at least next spring.

Signaling end to surge, Petraeus leaves unanswered what’s next
by Jim Mannion, AFP
1 hour, 43 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) – General David Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq, signaled the end of the surge Monday but left unanswered how US forces can be further reduced without tipping Iraq back toward civil war.

Petraeus and US Ambassador Ryan Crocker told members of Congress during more than six hours of testimony that security has improved enough to permit the withdrawal of US surge troops by mid-July 2008.

But the general’s proposal was greeted with skepticism bordering on derision by critics who said it was just a “token” aimed at buying President George W. Bush time with a restive Congress.

Giuliani walks fine line on 9/11 in White House bid
By Michelle Nichols, Reuters
Mon Sep 10, 5:47 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Rudy Giuliani rose to national fame in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, but experts say his moment as “America’s mayor” is both the biggest asset and potential liability in his White House bid.

On the eve of the sixth anniversary of the World Trade Center attack, experts warned there was a fine line between Giuliani emphasizing his 9/11 leadership as mayor of New York and politicizing the al Qaeda strike that killed 2,750 people in the city.

“This is America’s mayor trying to become America’s president,” Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said of Giuliani, who is leading public opinion polls for the Republican 2008 presidential nomination.

Hagel hands Senate Republicans another setback

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war, announced on Monday he will not seek re-election, raising a new hurdle to his battered party’s bid to win back control of the Senate next year.

Hagel, 60, who earlier flirted with a possible 2008 run for the White House, also ended speculation he may seek the presidency or vice presidency next year.

“I said after I was elected in 1996 that 12 years in the Senate would probably be enough. It is,” Hagel told a news conference in Omaha, Nebraska.

Thompson: Due process for bin Laden

By JIM DAVENPORT, Associated Press Writer
Mon Sep 10, 7:13 PM ET

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Republican presidential contender Fred Thompson said Monday that while Osama bin Laden needs to be caught and killed, the terrorist mastermind would get the due process of law.

In his first campaign trip to South Carolina, the lawyer and former Tennessee senator answered questions about his recent statements about the man considered responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans. Last week, a new video with bin Laden surfaced, the first in three years.

On Friday, Thompson told reporters in Iowa that bin Laden is “more symbolism than anything else” and said his presence in the “mountains of Pakistan or Afghanistan is not as important as there are probably al-Qaida operatives inside the United States of America.”

Bodies exhumed from Viking burial mound
Associated Press

OSLO, Norway – Archaeologists opened a Viking burial mound on Monday, seeking to learn more about two women – possibly a queen and a princess – laid to rest there 1,173 years ago.

In 1904, the mound in southeastern Norway’s Vestfold County surrendered one of the country’s greatest archaeological treasures, the Oseberg Viking longboat, which is now on display at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo.

The 65-foot vessel was buried in 834 in the enormous mound as the grave ship for a rich and powerful Viking woman, according to the museum.

Scientists reinvent use for satellites

INDIANAPOLIS – Running out of gas usually means a long walk to a gas station to get more fuel. When a satellite’s fuel tank runs dry, though, the mission’s over – or it used to be.

Scientists at Purdue University and Lockheed Martin Corp. have devised new techniques that allow engineers to extend the lives of older communications satellites by redistributing the dwindling supply of propellant in the crafts’ fuel tanks.

They tested the method on twin communications satellites launched in 1991 and were able to boost the remaining life span for each satellite from six to nine months to about two years.

Expert says climate change will spread global disease

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea (AFP) – Climate change will have an overwhelmingly negative impact on health with possibly one billion more people at risk from dengue fever within 80 years, an expert said Tuesday.

While there would be some positive effects, “the balance of health effects is on the negative side,” Alistair Woodward, a professor at the University of Auckland, told a regional meeting of the World Health Organisation.

Woodward was a lead writer for the fourth assessment report of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change.

Over one million hit by fresh floods in India, Bangladesh

GUWAHATI, India (AFP) – More than one million people have been evacuated or stranded as rivers in northeastern India and Bangladesh rose to alarming levels and submerged vast swathes of countryside, officials said Monday.

In India’s Assam state, the army helped shift an estimated 800,000 people as the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries — swollen by monsoon rains — breached their embankments late Sunday.

A further 300,000 people further downstream in Bangladesh were displaced or marooned, most of them for the second time in as many months, officials said.

EU antitrust power in balance on Microsoft decision
By David Lawsky, Reuters
Mon Sep 10, 8:53 AM ET

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – When a European court hands down its landmark Microsoft (MSFT.O) antitrust decision next Monday, at stake will be nothing less than the power of the European Commission to regulate the high-tech industry.

The decision by the 13-judge Grand Chamber of the Court of First Instance in Luxembourg will determine whether the European Union’s executive arm ruled properly in 2004 that Microsoft used its near-monopoly Windows system to push rivals out of the marketplace. Competitive products must perch on that platform.

Companies around the world are waiting for a decision that could cut into the Commission’s power, as it considers antitrust cases and complaints involving Microsoft, Intel (INTC.O), Qualcomm (QCOM.O), Rambus (RMBS.O) and others.

My 9/11 diary

(cross posted from daily Kos)

It’s the anniversary. I was there, in the building.  More below.

I’m a victim of 9/11.  I was in the building when the plane hit.

Compared to some people, I was lucky: I wasn’t injured.  I kept my job.  I got home easily.  But compared to the vast majority of Americans, I am a victim.  I had glass in my hair. I lost a year’s work, and some irreplaceable items.  My family went crazy for a while.  My kid had nightmares.  You explain to a 5 year old why (in his words) “They crashed into the building on purpose?” or reply to “I thought pilots were good people”.

But I am a victim another way.

I share part of this other victimhood with all Americans.  I am a victim, not of terror, but of the so-called `war on terror’.  I am a victim of a government that is out-of-control.  I am a victim of crushing national debt.  I am a victim because I live in a country that went from having the sympathy of the world to one that is a pariah, an outcast among nations, a rogue state.  I am a victim because I now have to `watch what I say’.  I am a victim because my rights are violated, not by some nebulous and inimical group of terrorists, but by my own government.

They do not speak for me

But in another way, I do not share this other victimhood.  My victimhood is being abused.

I have watched for years as my government – our government – has whittled away my rights, stolen my freedoms, and wrecked the constitution in the name of a false security.  I have watched and watched and watched, as they have used my name – my victimhood – to make me a victim once again.

They do not speak for me

So, I will post this diary, and I will take action.  I will volunteer.  I will give money.  I will make a difference.  This is MY country, this is MY victimhood, and I will not have it abused.  I am no martyr; I have no death wish; I hope that no terrorist ever strikes anywhere again.  But the founders of this country knew what they were doing. They wanted freedom.  They DEMANDED freedom.  They put their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor on the line to win freedom.  And now it is reduced to this.

But it is worse even than this; it would be one thing to pay too heavy a price to increase our safety.  But we have paid the price for nothing.  We have arrested thousands of people, and let them go.  We have spied on our own citizens, and found out nothing.  We have allied ourselves with torturers, and yet, we are not safe.  Indeed, by making our enemies unite, we have made ourselves weaker, and our enemies stronger.

This victim demands an end to the ‘war on terror’ that is really a war on America.  Impeach the president

Muse in the Morning

The muses are ancient.  The inspirations for our stories were said to be born from them.  Muses of song and dance, or poetry and prose, of comedy and tragedy, of the inward and the outward.  In one version they are Calliope, Euterpe and Terpsichore, Erato and Clio, Thalia and Melpomene, Polyhymnia and Urania.

It has also been traditional to name a tenth muse.  I don’t have a name for one, but I do think there should be a muse for the graphical arts.

Please join us inside to celebrate our various muses…

I know you have talent.  Let it bloom.  Encourage others to let it bloom inside them as well.

Won’t you share your words or art, your sounds or visions, your thoughts scientific or philosophic, the comedy or tragedy of your days?  And be excellent to one another!

I’m just curious
