Tibet was “not “Shangrila: Rare film from 1950’s

I thought I would post this today so that DharmaBums will have some knowledge of historical conditions in Tibet.

Some will say, “But it’s from CCTV, therefore it is propaganda.”

Watch and judge for yourself.

The 25 minute documentary includes rare archived film footage from the 1950’s and recent follow up interviews with survivors that are seen in the film.

Links below the fold, please watch Parts 1 and 2 and then discuss in comments if you like.

Buddhism is so cool. But….

Yes, it is. A very cool religion.

But there is a problem that we Americans need to explore as a Democratic nation founded on the principles of Separation of Church and State and Freedom of Religion..

How does Tibet survive politically in a modern world?

Should the spiritual leader of Buddhism be a political leader?

As a DJ, CNN Sucks: A Disco Disaster

I posted this at  DK but thought I’d expand on it here.

[new] Disco Disaster (14+ / 0-)

The cut from Obama to McFear reminded me of when I was a club DJ years ago.  Sometimes the floor would be alive, people movin’, groovin’ on the good foot and then I’d screw up (not often but..) and cue the wrong record.  BAM, you could feel the funk leave the room.

CNN  sucks as a DJ.

Suzanne takes you down

to her place near the river

You can hear the boats go by

You can spend the night beside her

And you know that she’s half crazy

But that’s why you want to be there

And she feeds you tea and oranges

That come all the way from china

And just when you mean to tell her

That you have no love to give her

Then she gets you on her wavelength

And she lets the river answer

That you’ve always been her lover

And you want to travel with her

And you want to travel blind

And you know that she will trust you

For you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind.

Obama is like Chocolat

Before anyone starts slinging the “R” word around, this is not about that. So get your pointed little cursor off of the Hide Button and have a read.

The film Chocolat begins in a church…

Opening lines from the film “Chocolat”

Once upon a time, there was a quiet little village in the French countryside, whose people believed in Tranquilité – Tranquility. If you lived in this village, you understood what was expected of you. You knew your place in the scheme of things. And if you happened to forget, someone would help remind you. In this village, if you saw something you weren’t supposed to see, you learned to look the other way. If perchance your hopes had been disappointed, you learned never to ask for more. So through good times and bad, famine and feast, the villagers held fast to their traditions. Until, one winter day, a sly wind blew in from the North…

I’m not going to spoil it in case you haven’t had the pleasure, but I will include some of the themes of this fine piece of film making directed by Lasse Hallström and written by Joanne Harris (novel) and Robert Nelson Jacobs (screenplay).

Xin Nian Kuai Le 4705 (2008AD) Rats

Happy Lunar New Year. (*hic*)

The Lunar New Year dates from 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the Chinese zodiac.

Because of cyclical lunar dating, the first day of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. On the Chinese calendar, 2008 is Lunar Year 4705-4706.

On the Western calendar, the start of the New Year falls on February 7, 2008 – The Year of the Rat.

If you were born in 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 – you were born under the sign of the rat.

I am a rat and damned proud of it.  There is no distinction in China between a rat and a mouse BTW.

Because I am a rat this year, and if I wear red underwear, I will be lucky.  I have 4 new pairs, one for each quarter.  I should get real lucky.

There are no political ads on TV, no blue and red posters in front lawns, no witty bumper stickers. Nor are there people yelling loudly in my neighborhood. When I look out my window I see nothing but white, but that’s because it has been foggy here for the last week. Normally I would see smiling, happy people. A survey even says 72% of the people are happy. The others say they would be happy too if only they made more money. Other than that, they are OK.

No, I am not living in a dreamworld.

No, I am not under the influence of uppers, downers, screamers or laughers.

Talkin’ Toxic Trash: Hillary, Jackson Stephens & WTI

It only seems fair that if Hillary wants to dig through Obama’s trash that her early years should come under scrutiny as well.

It’s well know that she was involved with WalMart.  How many people know about the Clinton connections to another Arkansas corporatist that is far dirtier than WalMart?

Let’s take a look at Waste Technologies Incorporated (WTI), Jackson Stephens and Hillary/Bill Clinton.
