Breakfast Tune Ain’t Done Nothing If You Ain’t Been Called A Red

Faith Petric and Mark Ross. From Rebel Voices: Songs of the Industrial Workers of the World.

when I was just a little thing I used to love parades
with banners, bands and red balloons and maybe lemonade
when I came home one mayday my neighbours father said
them marchers is all commies tell me kid are you a red?
well, I didnt know just what he meant my hair back then was brown
our house was plain red brick like most others in the town
so I went and asked my mamma why our neighbour called me red
my mummy took me on her knee and this is what she said

CHORUS:
well you aint done nothin if you aint been called a red
if youve marched or agitated, youre bound to hear it said
so you might as well ignore it, or love the word instead
cause you aint been doin nothin if you aint been called a red

when I was growin up, had my troubles I suppose
when someone took exception to my face or to my clothes
or tried to cheat me on a job or hit me on the head
when I organised to fight back why the stinkers called me red

but you aint done nothin if you aint been called a red
if youve marched or agitated, youre bound to hear it said
so you might as well ignore it, or love the word instead
cause you aint been doin nothin if you aint been called a red

when I was livin on my own one apartment that I had
had a lousy rotten landlord let me tell ya he was bad
but when he tried to throw me out I rubbed my hands and said
you havent seen a struggle if you havent fought a red!

and you aint done nothin if you aint been called a red
if youve marched or agitated, then youre bound to hear it said
so you might as well ignore it, or love the word instead
cause you aint been doin nothin if you aint been called a red

well I kept on agitatin, cause what else can you do?
youre gonna let the sons of bitches walk all over you
my friends said youll get fired, hanging with that commie mob
I should be so lucky buddy, I aint got a job

and you aint done nothin if you aint been called a red
if youve marched or agitated, then youre bound to hear it said
so you might as well ignore it, or love the word instead
cause you aint been doin nothin if you aint been called a red

well Ive been agitatin now for fifty years or more
for jobs or for equality and always against war
Ill keep on agitatin as far as I can see
and if thats what being red is then Its good enough for me

cause you aint done nothin if you aint been called a red
if youve marched or agitated, then youre bound to hear it said
so you might as well ignore it, or love the word instead
cause you aint been doin nothin if you aint been called a red

Congress will abandon Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, White House concedes
Alan Yuhas, The Guardian

White House officials conceded on Friday that the president’s hard-fought-for Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal would not pass Congress, as lawmakers there prepared for the anti-global trade policies of President-elect Donald Trump.

Earlier this week, congressional leaders in both parties said they would not bring the trade deal forward during a lame-duck session of Congress, before the formal transition of power on 20 January.

The Democratic senator Chuck Schumer, who will be minority leader in the next Congress, told union leaders the trade deal would not pass. Senator Mitch McConnell, the chamber’s Republican majority leader, told reporters “no” when asked if Congress would consider the TPP.

The deal has supporters in both parties but became a campaign symbol for lost manufacturing jobs, especially in the rust belt states. …

Lego ends Daily Mail toy giveaway after protest on migrant coverage
Jacob Gronholt-Pedersen and Michael Holden, Reuters

Danish toymaker Lego said on Saturday it would stop giving away free toys with Britain’s Daily Mail, following a campaign to stop advertising in newspapers accused of discrimination in their coverage of migrants.

Lego has been criticized by Stop Funding Hate, an online campaign, for cooperating with the Daily Mail – a newspaper it accuses of portraying migrants negatively and spurring hatred before and after Britain’s June referendum on EU membership.

“We have finished the agreement with the Daily Mail and are not planning any future promotional activity with the newspaper,” the company wrote on Twitter in response to tweets by Stop Funding Hate. …

Bottled water must be delivered to Flint residents in lead crisis, judge rules
Ryan Felton, The Guardian

Residents of Flint, Michigan, who are facing the risk of lead contamination in their water are entitled to water bottle delivery to their home, a federal judge ruled this week.

David Lawson, a US district judge, said in a preliminary injunction that officials must deliver each week four cases of bottled water per resident to Flint households that don’t have properly installed taps.

“The interim relief is intended to provide a rough substitute for the essential service that municipal water systems must furnish: delivery of safe drinking water at the point of use,” Lawson wrote in the 37-page order. “The Court is convinced that this service can be achieved by means of the current water main and service line infrastructure, augmented by effective faucet filters that are installed and maintained properly.” …

U.S. banks’ post-election rally may be just an appetizer
Sinead Carew, Reuters

The U.S. banking sector’s dramatic rally post Election Day is likely just a taste of bigger gains to come, as investors expect banks to reap huge benefits from rising interest rates and lighter regulation under a Donald Trump presidency.

In recent years, bank stocks have been held back by heavy regulation and historically low interest rates which have sapped the earnings potential of their massive cash holdings.

But optimism about the sector’s outlook is growing. Interest rates are rising and investors are betting that Trump will follow through on his campaign promise to review the increased number of regulations put on the banking system after it nearly keeled over in the 2008 financial crisis. …

Samuel DuBose: mistrial declared with jury deadlocked in police shooting case
Ryan Felton, The Guardian

An Ohio judge on Saturday declared a mistrial in the case of a white police officer charged with the murder of an unarmed black motorist, prompting activists to demand “system-wide accountability” and an immediate retrial.

Twenty-six-year-old University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing shot 43-year-old Samuel DuBose in the head after pulling him over for a missing front license plate on 19 July 2015.

Tensing testified that he feared he would be killed when DuBose dragged him with his car while trying to drive away. Prosecutors said repeatedly the evidence contradicted Tensing’s story. …

Hamilton freezes pet bulldog’s sperm

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Lewis Hamilton’s pet bulldog Roscoe, who occasionally accompanies the triple Formula One world champion to races, has had his sperm frozen to ensure he can have puppies in future.

Hamilton, racing at what could be a title-deciding Brazilian Grand Prix, revealed the news on an instagram account (roscoelovescoco) set up in his pets’ names and followed by nearly 100,000 fans.

“Roscoe in great spirits. Due to some complications, we had to have him snipped,” the Briton, a regular on the celebrity gossip pages, wrote.

“However, since he’s the best looking bulldog I decided to freeze his sperm so that in time to come I could have his pups. He is the best pedigree. Both mum and father were champion show dogs so it’s great his gene will live on.”

Coco appeared with Hamilton on the “Good Morning America” U.S. television show this month after the U.S. Grand Prix, prompting questions about Roscoe’s whereabouts.

Hamilton is 19 points behind Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg with two races remaining.
