Brown Pelicans

In case you weren’t aware of it, Brown Pelicans are not fucking brown, and they have yellow and white heads.

Losing Illusions – Naomi Klein

Naomi Klein:Gulf oil spill: A hole in the world

…the BP disaster pulls back the curtain on something far more hidden: how little control even the most ingenious among us have over the awesome, intricately interconnected natural forces with which we so casually meddle. BP cannot plug the hole in the Earth that it made. Obama cannot order fish species to survive, or brown pelicans not to go extinct (no matter whose ass he kicks). No amount of money – not BP’s recently pledged $20bn (£13.5bn), not $100bn – can replace a culture that has lost its roots. And while our politicians and corporate leaders have yet to come to terms with these humbling truths, the people whose air, water and livelihoods have been contaminated are losing their illusions fast.

“Everything is dying,” a woman said as the town hall meeting was finally coming to a close. “How can you honestly tell us that our Gulf is resilient and will bounce back? Because not one of you up here has a hint as to what is going to happen to our Gulf. You sit up here with a straight face and act like you know when you don’t know.”

This Gulf coast crisis is about many things – corruption, deregulation, the addiction to fossil fuels. But underneath it all, it’s about this: our culture’s excruciatingly dangerous claim to have such complete understanding and command over nature that we can radically manipulate and re-engineer it with minimal risk to the natural systems that sustain us.

I’d rather have been a mother

Some days come with more pain than others.

Like Father’s Day.

On another Father’s Day, several years ago, I wrote about being The Unfather.

Throughout my post-transition life, I have met situations in which I have had to defend the fact that I wasn’t born female.   I have been told that I cannot ever really understand what it is to be a women because I didn’t grow up being a girl.  And, if the person I’m having the “discussion” with really wants to pour salt in the wound, I’ll be told about the experiences I can never have.

Dear Pachamama: This Too Can Heal

despacho 6/19/10

The Despacho

Beyond the anger, frustration, sadness, depression and fear of the BP oil disaster there must be something else.  The Gulf of Mexico is fast becoming a deadly petroleum gumbo garnished with oil coated, dead pelicans, life in the sea is massing and trying unsuccessfully to escape the pollution, and there may really be nothing on a practical level that can be done to staunch the hemorrhage of Pachamama’s vital fluids.  We watch in horror.  And grief.  Is our mother dying?  I awoke in the middle of the night to write this haiku:

I watch you dying.

Pelican can’t fly away.

Oceans fill my eyes.

UN Contradicts US Happy-Talk About Afghanistan

US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates delivered a very optimistic report about Afghanistan to Congress last Wednesday, June 16.

“I think we are regaining the initiative; I think we are making headway.”

But on Saturday a different assessment was published by the United Nations.

Violence in Afghanistan has continued to increase in recent months, as has the use of improvised explosive devices and suicide attacks, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a new report.

And “anti-government” violence isn’t just more intense, it’s also better organized.

There are also an average of two more complex suicide attacks per month — bigger operations involving more assailants — double the average for 2009, the report said.

“The shift to more complex suicide attacks demonstrates a growing capability of the local terrorist networks linked to al Qaeda,” it said.

Meanwhile “collateral damage” continues to make blood enemies for the United States and its puppet-government in Kabul.

Ten civilians, including at least five women and children, were killed in NATO airstrikes in Khost Province, the provincial police chief said Saturday.

But there’s always good news for somebody in the Global War on Terror!

The United States Embassy here said Saturday that the company once known as Blackwater Worldwide has been awarded a contract worth more than $120 million to protect new United States consulates in the Afghan cities of Herat and Mazar-e-Sharif, The Associated Press reported.

Great Athletes Who Thrilled Us and Enriched Our Lives

Crossposted at Daily Kos

If you’re a sports fan as I am of several sports, have you ever wondered who the greatest athlete ever was.  If so, who among the greatest was your favorite of all time?

In late 1999, Sports Illustrated magazine held an awards ceremony to honor the ‘Sportsman of the Century.’  Among those honored in their respective sports were Muhammad Ali (Boxing), Jim Brown (Football), Wayne Gretzky (Hockey), Michael Jordan (Basketball), Babe Didrikson Zaharias (Best Female Athlete), Carl Lewis (Olympian), Jack Nicklaus (Golf), and Babe Ruth (Baseball).

Online Sex, Anyone?

A Spanish Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

‘House’ for instance, is feminine: ‘la casa’.

‘Pencil,’ however, is masculine: ‘el lapiz’.

One of the students asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether ‘computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.
