“Captain, tomorrow you will get your ship.  She is the best in the fleet.  Cruising at Warp 7, you will have the best of the best that we have.”  Admiral Archer told Smith.

“Sir, thank you for the confidence.  I will try to make us proud.”

“Don’t be late for the ceremony.  Have you chosen your crew yet?”

Teddy Pendergrass — March 20, 1950 to January 13, 2010

Teddy Pendergrass Pictures, Images and Photos

Sadly, one of our country’s great R&B artists passed on today, just over two months shy of his 60th birthday. Theodore “Teddy” DeReese Pendergrass, Sr. was an accomplished R&B/soul singer, as well as a songwriter.  Teddy passed on from this life at 9:59 P.M., less than five hours ago at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia.

The Associated Press article appeared on the Minneapolis Star website a couple of hours ago and can be viewed here. Further information can be found here and the biography from his own website can be accessed here.

The opening two paragraphs of the Minneapolis Star article read as follows:

PHILADELPHIA – Teddy Pendergrass, who became R&B’s reigning sex symbol in the 1970s and ’80s with his forceful, masculine voice and passionate love ballads and later became an inspirational figure after suffering a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed, died Wednesday at age 59.

The singer’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father died at Bryn Mawr Hospital in suburban Philadelphia. The singer underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had “a difficult recovery,” his son said.

Dammit, Burnt My Chicken

This is probably the worst cooking I’ve ever done. I had my chicken all ready, except the skin wasn’t crisped up, so I put it on broil for a couple of minutes. I forgot all about it, and within five minutes, the smoke alarm went on, woke up my husband, and we looked around for the alarm as we couldn’t find it in our apartment through the smoke.

The chicken’s all burnt and black.

What a way to treat a bird.

And it’s such a sad-looking chicken right now.

Anyways, consider this as a thread for your worst cooking experience.

Trapped in the Rubble

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Obama walked out of a National Security Council meeting and observed, “for a country and a people who are no strangers to hardship and suffering, this tragedy seems especially cruel and incomprehensible.”

Those words from the man at the top of America’s cruel and incomprehensible political system, from the guardian of America’s cruel and incomprehensible economic system, from the protector of America’s cruel and incomprehensible banking system must seem especially meaningless to the hundreds of millions of victims of America’s corporate wars, corporate exploitation, and corporate repression.  The devastation in Haiti, as tragic and terrible as it is, is minor compared to the devastation inflicted on a global scale, inflicted every minute of every day, inflicted on the poor and the powerless of every nation by the corporate masters of this country.

No Richter Scale can measure their destructive impact, no words can convey the enormity of the hardship and suffering they inflict.  The death toll is in the millions, but there’s no media coverage of that catastrophe.  No one provides assistance to the victims, there are no relief efforts, there’s no help on the way for the survivors trapped in that rubble, they’re on their own . . .

We can see the corruption, we can hear the lies, we can feel the consequences closing in, we can taste the bitterness, we can smell the smoke as America burns, as the world burns, as the future itself burns.  Obama and the Democrats aren’t putting out the fire, they’re fanning the flames.  Whether that’s due to stupidity or complicity doesn’t really matter anymore.  Putting out the fire is all that matters now.

Get ready to do that alone, because we won’t be getting any help from the Obama addicts. They overdosed on unreality long ago.  They took the poison from the poison stream, then floated out of here, floated out of reality into Obama Land, where the inhabitants see only what they want to see, where they hear only what they want to hear.  They run through the streets, with eyes cold and dead, under a black belly of cloud in the rain, in through a doorway, they give each other white golden pearls, stolen from the sea, they’re raging at “purity trolls”, they’re raging, and a storm blows up in their eyes whenever they’re confronted with the truth.

They’re addicts.  Denial is their drug.  They’re stoned on it, they’re hooked on it, they smoke it, they inject it, they mainline it, they freebase it, whatever it takes to get baked.  They’re all dealers of denial, they’re all pushers of denial, they hook each other up, they’re wired on it, they’re all wired on it, scoring the next fix is all they care about.  Whatever the Big Man does or doesn’t do is just fine with them.

Heart weary thinking about our own MomCat and countless others who are working under incredibly stressful and meager conditions on the ground in or near Haiti.

And all the safe people who await word, hoping to hear their loved ones are safe.

I was just in the car with my daughter, this song came on the radio…. made me smile a little.

Teleconference on Emergency Response to Haiti Earthquake

January 13, 2010

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams already working on medical projects Haiti have treated hundreds of people injured in the quake and have been setting up clinics in tents to replace their own damaged medical facilities. Paul McPhun, MSF’s operations manager for Haiti, described the current situation for MSF teams on the ground during a press conference on January 13.

Haiti: Don’t Forget

It’s been a week. One week. The Haitian earthquake that likely killed 100,000+ people last week is fading from public consciousness. After a week. American Idol has started back up, after all. One must redirect attention to the important things.

What’s worse is that little is remaining in the minds of most Americans other than “the great USA is sending aid.” Well… if you’re a thinking cog in The Machine. If you’re a nonthinking cog you may have opinions more along these paraphrases of Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson: “Haitian aid was a racist political ploy of Obama” or “Haitians got what they deserved because they made a deal with the Devil.” On a side note, I thought deals with the devil resulted in good things on this Earth in exchange for perpetual torture after death. Then again, any attempt to try to make sense of modern religion is an exercise in the absurd. But this is not an essay on religion.

This is an essay on Haiti – and on the United States’ relationship with Haiti.

I’m done with this place. Sorry!

So I wrote an essay here describing how America supports a certain evil in the world.

And it was deleted.

Really quickly.

Censored.

Those who know me KNOW I won’t put up with this bullshit.

So I’m done here.

Which saddens me.   I really don’t want to go, I really like it here, and the people are awesome.

But censoring one of the most important issues in America, one of the driving forces in the world, one of the dominant political problems known to man, including a country that is the GREATEST THREAT TO PEACE IN THE WORLD?

To those who want to censor this I just say

FUCK YOU.

And FUCK YOU AGAIN.

Bye now.

I’ve enjoyed it here, till now.

What the FUCK? Why was my essay “removed”?

What the hell is going on?
