Looking to women as agents of peace.

Today we live in a world where the overwhelming majority of war casualties are civilian, and the majority of those are women and children. Women are typically the most marginalized people in a war-torn country, and when these countries sanction violence against women, we tend to look away and dismiss it as cultural. We throw our hands in the air because we think there is nothing we can do. We need look no further than to the Taliban.

But women are also the people who hold their families and communities together in times of war. To a large degree, they are the ones who create stability and rebuild — and they are left to care for the survivors.

Empowering the women in war torn countries is powerful way to create stability and peace.

4 Inches Deeper

The 1976 Viking lander would have likely found water ice on Mars if it had probed just 4 inches deeper.

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has revealed frozen water hiding just below the surface of mid-latitude Mars. The spacecraft’s observations were obtained from orbit after meteorites excavated fresh craters on the Red Planet.

Water ice, never seen before in Mars’ “temperate” zone, was discovered in a shallow crater that was made in 2008. The ice reveals that Mars was warmer and wetter in the relatively recent past.

The finds indicate water-ice occurs beneath Mars’ surface halfway between the north pole and the equator, a lower latitude than expected in the Martian climate.

This ice is a relic of a more humid climate from perhaps just several thousand years ago.

said Shane Byrne of the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Mars has large variations in its tilt that cause its climate to change even more strongly that the changes from glacial to interglacial on earth. However, Mars lost most of its atmosphere to space because Mars lacks the mass (size) to hold on to its upper atmosphere when it interacts with energetic particles in the solar wind. With only 1% of the atmospheric pressure of the earth, the Martian surface is uninhabitable to humans.

Rep. Grayson spanks everyone on CNN

Dems with guts? Dems who want to use our huge majorities to fight for real change, the kind we need after 8 years of Bush and 30 years and more of living under the iron heel of the Reagan years. Someone pinch me, I think I’m dreaming.

What a week this guy is having! Between holding every contractor accountable and not just ACORN to calling the wingnuts on their lies and YOU LIEs, and then apologizing to the dead of our national health care horror story, and now this! I soooo want this guy to run for a state office (Senate, Gov) and then go BIG in 2016! or sooner!

Now, A Rant

I’m sitting here listening to Rachel Maddow going into Grayson, his House floor speech, who should apologize to whom.

I’ve watched blogs post about Roman Polanski and whether or not it is a big deal.

This is what we’ve become?

Rant mode ON…

Even Olbermann has his Troubles, and so do I . 20090930

I have missed K. O. the past several days on his show, but I understand with which he has to deal.  The standins are OK, (I would like to see more females in the slot), but they are not K. O..  He is back tonight, with a vengeance, and that is a good thing.

He is likely the most expressive and passionate advocate for our cause that is not on shortwave radio.  I am glad that he was able to come onto MSNBC tonight.

A “Carbon-Constrained” World Is Coming?

Yes, this is another essay that deals with oil, the lack thereof, and how this fact is destabilizing the world with war and the threat of new wars.

The Washington Post has this article about oil, Iran, and China:

Oil, Ideology Keep China From Joining Push Against Iran

In its effort to muster support for sterner action against Iran, the Obama administration will have to overcome China’s reluctance to punish a country that is one of its top oil suppliers and a major beneficiary of its energy-related investments.

The fact that Iran is China’s biggest supplier is not news to some of us.  As I showed before, and again below, Iran is China’s biggest supplier because it is the country with the most oil reserves not dominated, or in the process of being dominated, by the United States:

1. Saudi Arabia – 264.3

2. Canada – 178.8

3. Iran – 132.5

4. Iraq – 115.0

5. Kuwait – 101.5

6. United Arab Emirates – 97.8

7. Venezuela – 79.7

8. Russia – 60.0

9. Libya – 39.1

10. Nigeria – 35.9

11. United States – 21.4

Aren’t we glad that our MSM is almost up to speed on this issue?

RedSK–S & HATE CRIMES (Edited)

The Indian removals which destroyed one quarter of the Cherokee tribe, were actually conceptualized by Jefferson and then extended and carried out by Jackson. There were great debates about whether the “redskins” were human and whether they had souls.

Eurotrib.com now Kos

http://www.eurotrib.com/

ET is now deleting diaries related to 911 and the swine flu bioweapon issue.

The admins statement also implied “CT” subject essays were no longer welcome.

I then attempted to delete such things with no success.  So now we have the european version of kos.  The gatekeepers of modern “progressive” thought.
