Why Doesn’t Rihanna Just Leave? The Myths & Realities of Leaving An Abusive Relationship

I’ve been following the Rihanna/Chris Brown story and aside from the Hollywood glam that’s been dominated the coverage, I wrote this piece after reading this Alternet article for the third time ….

“I’m sick and tired of hearing the same old myths being perpetrated about domestic violence. The one that gets under my skin the most is “Why doesn’t she just leave?” Why aren’t we asking the abuser “why doesn’t he leave?” It’s not the survivor’s responsibility, it’s all about power & control that prevents an abusee from leaving an abusive relationship.

Your Letter Willl Be Hand Delivered to Eric Holder Tomorrow (Sunday) – If You Write It Now

Ijust received an email from Victoria2DC from dkos letting me know that Pam Miles who works with Don Seigelman will be meeting Eric Holder tomorrow at a civil rights event he will be attending in Alabama with Artur Davis.  She is friendly with Artur Davis and knows she will be able to get the letters to Holder. Unfortunately, she is leaving at 5 am in the morning so your letter should be emailed to her ASAP so that she has time to print it.  I apologize for the late notice but unfortunately Victoria2DC was out earlier today when Pam’s email arrived.

The AFL-CIO and “nationalization”

Original article, by Barry Grey, via World Socialist Web Site:

The AFL-CIO Executive Council, at its annual winter meeting in Miami Beach, Florida, adopted a resolution Thursday urging the Obama administration to temporarily nationalize failing banks. What is the significance of this policy statement? Does it represent a radical reorientation by the AFL-CIO, which, after all, has been throughout its history an implacable foe of socialism and defender of the profit system?

Welcome to Monty Python’s Flying Bank Bailout Circus

In “The Big Dither” Paul Krugman warns:

There’s a growing sense of frustration, even panic, over Mr. Obama’s failure to match his words with deeds. The reality is that when it comes to dealing with the banks, the Obama administration is dithering. Policy is stuck in a holding pattern.

Here’s how the pattern works: first, administration officials, usually speaking off the record, float a plan for rescuing the banks in the press. This trial balloon is quickly shot down by informed commentators.  Then, a few weeks later, the administration floats a new plan. This plan is, however, just a thinly disguised version of the previous plan, a fact quickly realized by all concerned. And the cycle starts again.
