I Got Promoted!!!!

Finally! Gosh! There ya go! Well, doggone it! You Betcha! Also!

Uh, it’s not what what you think. I’m retired….so with all the other old geezers, I’m an Election judge. Gets me out of the house, what can I say?

I’m a YOUNG Election Judge! So I get to put together all the booths and set up the Optiscan and Accuvote machines….and get to play around with the “voter Blackberry” named AskEd. The others like to do the ballot counts and pass out the voter sheets and check the registrations. I also get to handle all the forms like Provisional Ballots and Signature Capture.

So I got the news….the Election Commission called and asked if I would be the Technical Judge!!! I told them sure, I’m doing it already. They were so happy!???? Now what am I in for?

The duties of a Tech Judge are not much more than what the regular Election Judge does. There is additional Training, but it is all on how to set up the machines….

However, the Tech Judge is responsible for picking up the keys to the cabinet and the Optiscan and Accuvote machines and making sure all the forms are filled out. The Tech judge also administers the “Oath of Office”, chases away campaigners within the “Campaign Free Zone” and makes sure all the judges show up who say they are showing up. The Tech Judge also returns the Important stuff back to the county office after the close of the polls. It is a 5 am to 12 am job.

Another duty is to make sure there are judges from both parties at each station. And the Tech Judge has to convince a Judge from the other party to accompany him/her to the office to certify that no deviant “monkey business” occurred with the Important stuff!!!!!

That last is the Most Difficult. The Judges are all EXHAUSTED by 4 pm and the polls are open for another three hours and then it takes another 2 to 3 hours to pack up, tabulate, fill in the forms, certify all the records and locks before one can even drive the route to turn in the materials!!!!

Oh, yes, there is the pay! Judges do get paid. And we got a Raise this year!

Judges in Illinois now make $130 for the day!!!!  WOWWEE!!! I’m gonna be able to have me a good time at K-Mart!

I am happy though. Don’t tell my husband, but I would do it for free. It should be required of all citizens to do Election Judging at least once. Like appearing for Jury Duty, it should be expected as part of one’s civic duty.

And it is not so hard. Most people are polite and they want to vote as quickly and hassle-free as possible. And the idea of voter fraud???? Well, I haven’t really seen it. No bus loads have shown up, no body comes in with a fake beard and mustache. And the signatures usually match and if they don’t because of age or arthritis, there is a new “signature capture” form to fill out that takes less than 5 minutes.

And, call your Election Commission in your county or city and volunteer to be a Judge. It is the least you can do and you will get “handsomely” rewarded!!!!

Since I can’t embed yet….watch as Homer Simpson tries to vote for Obama

If this doesn’t make you want to run out and volunteer, just remember there are also DONUTS!

Enjoy and don’t forget to vote!

Our city clerk does your job here.  She was also the only one trained when we got the new machines, so she had to teach us the new count and certification method. I’m on the board of canvassers that certify the count. Totally different paperwork than before.  And we don’t get paid.
