How to win strikes

Original article, a reprinting of a pamphlet by Harry DeBoer, via Socialist Appeal.

Here is Harry’s recollection of a key incident in the wave of strikes. “On July 20, I was called to go to a warehouse because a bunch of cops were going to move a truck. About a thousand policemen were there. Around ten o’clock the captain came up to me and said, “Look, we don’t want a mess here.” I said all you have to do is move your cops away and don’t move any trucks. He checked with his superior and came back: ‘It’s a deal.’ It was a phony deal. At 12:30 the police went back to the warehouse. We went back, too, thousands of pickets, all unarmed. The police surrounded the truck and started moving it. Nine or ten or us in an open-bodied truck moved in front of it to stop them. So help me, police on roofs started shooting from all directions right into the workers. About fifty were injured. I was one of them, pretty near lost my leg. Two strikers got killed. The governor’s investigating committee put it this way: “Police took direct aim at the pickets and fired to kill” and “at no time did pickets attack the police.” Governor Olsen had a perfect right to arrest them for murder. Instead he declared a state of martial law and called out the National Guard. They surrounded the union headquarters and put most of our leadership in the stockade.”

China, the nation that invented fireworks, will today write in the smoggy sky above this ancient city an extraordinary statement of belief in its future – and its defiance of an ever-increasing tide of international criticism.

There will never have been such a show – or such dramatic symbolism – when the 29th summer Olympics opens in the futuristic “Bird’s Nest” stadium. With another batch of protesters cleared away from Tiananmen Square, and the United States President and arch critic, George Bush, one of 80 watching heads of state, the button will be pressed on the ultimate pyrotechnic spectacular.

Gates Pushing Plan to Double Afghan Army

By THOM SHANKER

Published: August 7, 2008

WASHINGTON – Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates will endorse a $20 billion plan to substantially increase the size of Afghanistan’s army and will also restructure the military command of American and NATO forces in response to the growing Taliban threat, senior Pentagon and military officials said Thursday.

Taken together, the two decisions are an acknowledgment of shortcomings that continue to hinder NATO- and American-led operations in Afghanistan. With the war in Iraq still an obstacle to any immediate American troop increase in Afghanistan, the plan was described by officials as an attempt to increase allied and Afghan capabilities in advance of deploying the additional American brigades that Mr. Gates and his commanders agree are necessary.

The additional American troops are unlikely to be available until next year.

The New York bodega fights for its life

Julio Pimentel is trying not to let his neighborhood shop become one of the many that have been forced to close — victims of high prices, both for rent and the food they sell.

By Erika Hayasaki, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

NEW YORK — The 7 a.m. sun gleams off the windows of this East Harlem bodega, as its owner, Julio Pimentel, unlocks the door and steps behind the counter that separates him from customers. He switches on a fan and tunes the radio to a Spanish station, and merengue awakens the humid morning.

It is Friday, Aug. 1. Rent is due, and Pimentel does not know if he can pay.

He spends $3,300 a month to lease the bodega. When he took over the small grocery eight years ago, monthly rent cost $1,500.

Pimentel surveys the shelves. He’s running low on popular items: grape-flavored Kool-Aid mix, Goya honey, Starbursts, Cheez Doodles, applesauce, sunflower seeds.

Sen. Boxer Fights Foreign Critters Invading US Waters

Invasive Species  Photo by K. Borden

Senator Boxer is fighting to protect US waters from invasive species that spread deadly diseases to people and wildlife, impair water supply infrastructure, harm ecosystems, cause twice the annual economic damage of all natural disasters, and are linked to half of the decline of endangered species.   When large ships are not transporting cargo, the ships pump coastal waters and all the living organisms into their ballast tanks while at foreign ports to obtain balance.  When closer to our shores, the ballast water is exchanged with ocean waters, but the exchange does not eliminate the invasive species, which then are discharged into our waters.  The 9th Circuit has directed the EPA to regulate this pollution while Congress has reached an impasse on legislation.

At times, we might forget that there are a good number of very bright, extremely dedicated, and fundamental people working in Congress. Elected officials and staff. Our funding system that seems to drive member after member to be begging, tin in cup, for funds can make the entire process look open to purchase.  The traditional media mania for ever lower quality reporting magnifies this, making foolish shallowness the norm.  Reality is far from this and it is worthwhile at times to take a moment to consider that reality.

An e-mail came into me today that reminded me of this, a letter with perhaps the best single word I’ve seen to summarize Republican truthiness when it comes to energy issues but a letter with substance.

Thank you Representative Earl Blumenauer.

Writing in the Raw: How Deep the Rabbit Hole Goes

I know why you’re here, Republican lurkers.  I know what you’ve been doing . . . why you hardly sleep, why you live the way you do, and why night after night, you sit by your computer and furtively read progressive blogs. You’re looking for him.  I know because I was once looking for the same thing.  And when he found me, he told me I wasn’t really looking for him.  I was looking for an answer.  It’s the question that drives us.  It’s the question that brought you here. You know the question, just as I did.

But you’re afraid to ask it.

I know you’re out there.  I can feel you now.  I know that you’re afraid . . . afraid of us.  You’re afraid of change.  I don’t know the future.  I didn’t write this WITR to tell you how this is going to end.  I wrote it to tell how it’s going to begin.

Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something.  What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it.  You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with Republicans.  Something very wrong. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad.

We’re here to help.  You want to know what’s wrong with Republicans?

Here’s a clue . . .

The Weapon of Young Gods #32: Perverse Psychic Penance

I’m beginning to think my life is in stuck in a perverse time warp, in some bizarre existential experiment where the control group is off getting massages and facials while I’m marooned once again with Roy, stuck inside a tiny metal box hurtling down Interstate 5 through Downey and La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs. It’s sometime after seven at night and we’re driving into Orange County for the ten millionth time, hurrying to get to Olivia’s birthday party in Capo Beach before its inevitable karmic murder by either A) over-eager, sting-happy cops, or B) excessively enthusiastic underage alcoholism.

Willful participation in such a risk-rich environment is anomalous at best and sheer insanity at worst, even with the indestructible constitution of Roy Reed in tow, because we both need to be back in Santa Barbara at a reasonable hour tomorrow-him for a midterm and me for my own reasons. So no, we shouldn’t be doing this at all, except that if all goes well, I might get to iron some things out with Lisa, the detective will get what he wants, and Roy will be able to safely skate off the thin ice he’s currently on with his Russian-gymnast girlfriend.

John McCain Has A Comprehensive Economic Plan!!!11!1!111!

Not only that, but…

John McCain will put the national interest ahead of partisanship to build an America that is safer, freer and more prosperous than when he was elected.!!!1!1!!!!11

And…

John McCain will help Americans hurting from high gasoline and food costs.!!!1!!!!1111!!!

And…

John McCain’s Lexington Project will address the rising costs of energy that are hurting small businesses.!1!1111!!1!!

You see, I was just reading the Washington Post:

Spread John McCain’s official talking points around the Web — and you could win valuable prizes!

That, in essence, is the McCain campaign’s pitch to supporters to join its new online effort, one that combines the features of “AstroTurf” campaigning with the sort of customer-loyalty programs offered by airlines, hotel chains, restaurants and the occasional daily newspaper.

On McCain’s Web site, visitors are invited to “Spread the Word” about the presumptive Republican nominee by sending campaign-supplied comments to blogs and Web sites under the visitor’s screen name. The site offers sample comments (“John McCain has a comprehensive economic plan . . .”) and a list of dozens of suggested destinations, conveniently broken down into “conservative,” “liberal,” “moderate” and “other” categories. Just cut and paste.

I went to the site (and I will now bathe in turpentine and kerosene!), and the current featured blogs to spam are Red State, Jeff Emanuel, and Daily Kos. It’s been a while since I’ve posted at Daily Kos, but this might be the motivation I need!

People who sign up for McCain’s program receive reward points each time they place a favorable comment on one of the listed Web sites (subject to verification by McCain’s webmasters). The points can be traded for prizes, such as books autographed by McCain, preferred seating at campaign events, even a ride with the candidate on his bus, known as the Straight Talk Express, according to campaign spokesman Brian Rogers.

A ride on the bus! What could be cooler than that? As my eighteen-month old son might sing:

The wheels on the bus go round and round

Round and round

Round and round

The wheels on the bus go round and round

All through the town!

Woo hoo!!!1!11!1!

Greater Cleveland RTA is up to its proverbial hairline in deception and thuggery.

RTA’s board of directors, along with general manager Joe Calabrese, want to eliminate two dozen bus lines – including all community circulators, drastically reduce service on twenty-seven other routes, and raise fares to ridiculously high levels.  The service cuts, scheduled to take place in October, would bring to an end the sole means of vehicular transport for thousands of workers, students, and patients in the Greater Cleveland area.  This is unacceptable.

Compounding the decision, Calabrese lied to riders who attended several meetings held the week of August 4th, citing bogus numbers about ridership, national fare averages, and other subjects.  This he did in an attempt to blame a projected $20-29 million deficit for 2009 on cuts in state funding and increased fuel costs.  The numbers, however, do not add up.  For one thing, according to research by the American Public Transportation Association, ridership has not going up for the last five years.  For example, a comparison of December 2006 and December 2007 shows that ridership actually declined from 4,607.1 to 3,882.0.  What’s more, ridership dropped from 4,423.2 in January 2008 to 4,141.3, then went back up again in March to 4,260.2.  That last number is lower than figures for March 2007, which was 4,982.

As to average fare rates, according to the following link:

http://www.apta.com/research/s…

Average fare paid per unlinked trip was $1.12. For bus, it was $0.89, commuter rail $4.22, paratransit $2.45, heavy rail $1.10, and light rail $0.72.

The proposed fare increase for RTA riders?  From the current $1.75 to $2.25, more than double the national average for 2006.  Unfortunately, I don’t have the 2008 average, but I’m certain it’s not even close to what Calabrese and his fellow goons stated at the public hearings.

That Joe Calabrese is lying is evident.  The question that must be asked is, “Why?”  Why lie about these things?  One theory suggests that decreased state funds and rising fuel costs are not the primary reason for the projected deficit.  My guess is that the Euclid Corridor project, which is costing taxpayers around $200 million – 80-83% of which comes from the federal government, leaving the remaining $40 million or so to come from somewhere else, probably the operating budget – is the primary culprit.  Another factor for consideration is the expensive replacement of the nineteen years-outdated fare boxes which, according to many riders, are experiencing numerous glitches.

Something fishy is going on, and I suspect it has to do with fiscal mismanagement at RTA by the administrators.  This is worth looking into, as it affects the lives of thousands of people whose lives depend on the routes up for elimination and reduction.
