Nancy Pelosi Needs Our Help – Call a Press Conference!

Appearing on “The View” TV show July 28th, Speaker Pelosi admitted that she did not know of a single crime that had been committed by the Bush Administration.  Joy Behar, one of the 5 co-hosts on the show, asked Pelosi why she had taken Impeachment off the table and continues to keep it off.  Pelosi responded by reiterating how important it is to stay focused on the many domestic issues requiring our attention and not to get distracted by such issues as Impeachment.  She went on to say that…

If somebody had a crime that the President had committed, that would be a different story.

You can watch a You Tube clip of both Pelosi on The View” and snips from the HOR JUd comm hearings “Shame on Pelosi”.  Be sure to watch to the end for a great surprise.

How sad!  Pelosi obviously needs our help; we must refresh her memory and the memory of “we the people”, who might have been confused by Pelosi’s lapse of consciousness.

Compassion for her condition restrains me from being sarcastic when I ask, “Where has Madam Speaker been for the past 7 years?  Was Rip Van Pelosi asleep and therefore unable to read Kucinich’s Articles of Impeachment?”

The time is right; Ron Suskind has just come out with new allegations of Bush crimes and Impeachable offenses.  These can all come together by holding a Press conference to repair this dangerous-RIP-loss of awareness.

Suggestions for repair below the fold–

Torture Trial Ends: Reflections on the Hamdan Verdict

Osama bin Laden's personal driver and bodyguard, who made the magisterial sum of $200 per month, 34-year-old Salim Ahmed Hamdan, who was held years without charges at Guantanamo Naval Base prison, has just been found guilty of lesser charges in the first of a series of planned “military commission” trials by the Bush Administration. Comprehensive news coverage of the Hamdan trial can be found at the Miami Herald.

Hamdan was found not guilty on two counts of conspiracy to foment terrorism in league with Al Qaeda. He was found guilty on five of eight charges of providing material support to terrorists. He has yet to be sentenced, and faces possible life imprisonment. In any case, the Bush Administration has already said that whatever the verdict or sentence, no “enemy combatant” will be released until the “war on terror” is over, i.e., until hell freezes over.

Republicans Running Scared from GOP Convention

As of right now, Republican Gordon Smith, Elizabeth Dole, Ted Stevens, Bob Schaffer and Susan Collins are all skipping the GOP convention. Has this ever happened? We’ve had recent defectors like Zell “duel challenger” Miller, but have we ever had numerous incumbents skip out on honoring their party in such a public fashion?

Full disclosure, I am the netroots director for OR-Sen candidate Jeff Merkley

Four at Four

  1. The Hill reports the White House lauds Iraq’s reconstructions efforts. “The White House on Wednesday said Iraq has taken over much of the cost for its reconstruction”.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters: “They’ve already taken over a lot of their reconstruction cost, and I think the vast majority of it. They want to be able to do more, and they are doing more.”

Meanwhile, the NY Times reports As Iraq surplus rises, little goes into rebuilding. Whoops!

Soaring oil prices will leave the Iraqi government with a cumulative budget surplus of as much as $79 billion by year’s end, according to an American federal oversight agency. But Iraq has spent only a minute fraction of that on reconstruction costs, which are now largely borne by the United States.

The unspent windfall, which covers surpluses from oil sales since 2005, appears likely to reinforce growing debate about the approximately $48 billion in American taxpayer money devoted to rebuilding Iraq since the American-led invasion.

In one comparison, the United States has spent $23.2 billion in the critical areas of security, oil, electricity and water since the 2003 invasion, the report said. But from 2005 through April 2008, Iraq has spent just $3.9 billion on similar services.

Now of course the Democrats are up in arms about this and the ‘leadership’ has severeal stern letters ready to be sent. The Hill reports Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) said, “It is inexcusable for U.S. taxpayers to continue to foot the bill for projects the Iraqis are fully capable of funding themselves… We should not be paying for Iraqi projects while Iraqi oil revenues continue to pile up in the bank, including outrageous profits from $4-a-gallon gas prices in the U.S.”

  2. The LA Times reports a Amputee Marine returns to combat duty in Afghanistan.

Just over a year ago, Cpl. Garrett Jones was one of thousands of Marines slogging through a tour of duty in Iraq. Today, he is deployed with the same unit in Afghanistan, but he serves now with an unusual distinction.

On July 23, 2007, Jones was on foot patrol near the Iraqi city of Fallouja when he was injured by a roadside bomb. After the attack, his left leg was amputated above the knee. He developed infections and fevers. His weight dropped from 175 pounds to 125. At 21, Jones faced months of painful rehabilitation and a likely end to his service in the Marine Corps.

One year later, Jones is walking smoothly on a prosthetic leg. He not only continues to serve on active duty, but he has worked his way back to a war zone, serving with his Marine battle buddies in Afghanistan.

In previous wars, Jones would have been given a medical discharge. But today, “the Pentagon has made it possible for some amputees to return to duty — and for a few to deploy overseas again. Advances in medical care and high-tech prostheses have enabled amputees to function far better.”

Jones wanted to return to duty and show others what is possible for amputees. “I want to be someone an injured Marine can talk to,” he said. “And I can tell them: ‘Times will be rough and not always easy as an amputee, but you can still make great things out of an unfortunate situation.’ That’s what I want to do.”

Four at Four continues with an essay by an Iraqi journalist in America and a story about a homeless camp on a millionaires’ island near Seattle.

Cannibal Democrats

Allison Kilkenny wrote one of her typically brilliant columns over at Huffington Post regarding the increasingly Republican-like cultishness being displayed by far too many Democrats.

Instead of shunning those who criticize Obama’s handling of FISA and offshore drilling, or those individuals who are considering voting for Ralph Nader come November, Democrats should address the causes of these symptoms of anger and mistrust within their own party, all of which stem from an ideologically sick candidate, who has begun to play fast and loose with his principles.

These disillusioned Democrats aren’t traitors, and don’t deserve the burden of the unfair and immature dismissal: “Well, ENJOY President McCain, asshole!” Such digressions are why Democrats are forever on the defensive and the Republicans, year-after-year, are permitted to set the agenda. Democrats have an identity crisis and continue to publicly shun their brand as the progressive, peace-loving party. Worse than trying to mimic Republicans, now the party has turned cannibalistic and Democrats are attacking Democrats. Obamaniacs hate the Nader Raiders, and the Nader Raiders resent the fact that they feel ostracized for being too liberal and too progressive…whatever those labels mean nowadays.

A party is only as good as its ideas, and if the Democrats turn into the two-dimensional cartoon characters on FOX news, the screaming idiots that shout sound bites at each other from across the table, then they might as well sculpt their hair into humorless coifs, throw crucifixes around their necks, and call themselves Neo-Conservatives.

Just some food for thought.

Nancy Pelosi Needs Our Help – Call a Press Conference

Appearing on “The View” TV show July 28th, Madam Speaker virtually admitted that she did not know of a single crime that had been committed by the Bush Administration.

This is most sad.  Obviously, Pelosi needs our help; we must refresh her memory and the memory of “we the people.”

I don’t mean to be sarcastic. but it is very tempting to ask where she has been for the past 7 years,

OMFG Edwards love child exposed!!11!!!

Irrefutable proof.

No one can deny the truthfulness of these photographs, taken ALL BY MYSELF.

This is a clear indication that Edwards was part of a conspiracy to keep people from knowing about his love child.

You’ve all been waiting patiently, so I’d like to finally, at long last, break the silence and reveal the photograph that CONCLUSIVELY SHOWS that Edwards is a scummy liar baby daddy.

The quality of the photo is not the best, I used black and white film.

Shocking photograph below the fold!

Understanding Pelosi: One Word: “Accessory”

Nancy Pelosi was briefed on and signed off on torture. She won’t impeach because she is an accessory to war crimes.

She would be impeaching and convicting herself.

The motivation for blocking investigations into Bush lawbreaking

…one important political impediment to holding Bush officials accountable for their illegal torture program:

An additional complicating factor is that key members of Congress sanctioned this program, so many of those who might ordinarily be counted on to lead the charge are themselves compromised.

As we witness not just Republicans, but also Democrats in Congress, acting repeatedly to immunize executive branch lawbreaking and to obstruct investigations, it’s vital to keep that fact in mind. With regard to illegal Bush programs of torture and eavesdropping, key Congressional Democrats were contemporaneously briefed on what the administration was doing (albeit, in fairness, often in unspecific ways). The fact that they did nothing to stop that illegality, and often explicitly approved of it, obviously incentivizes them to block any investigations or judicial proceedings into those illegal programs.

In December of last year, The Washington Post revealed:

Four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA’s overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.

The article noted that other Democratic members who received briefings on the CIA’s interrogation program included Jay Rockefeller and Jane Harman.

Act now! Get the new, improved Iraq Moratorium

As the Iraq Moratorium prepares for its 12th monthly observance on August 15 — the Third Friday of the month, as always — it’s made some changes to get ready for its second year.

You’ll find a new website, with a new address, www.IraqMoratorium.com, and even a new logo to go with the new look.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the determination to end the senseless war and occupation of Iraq, by encouraging locally organized, grassroots actions to move more of the silent majority who say they oppose the war to do something to end it.

It’s a simple concept.  It asks people to interrupt their daily routines on the Third Friday of every month and take some action, individually or with a group, to end the war and occupation.

The national Moratorium doesn’t try to tell people what action to take.  It offers a wide variety of options, from wearing a button or armband to taking part in a demonstration, and many things in between.  The important thing is that people do something.

The national website acts as a clearinghouse for information, collecting and posting events planned by local organizers and reports, photos and videos afterward.  It also offers some tips and tools for organizers to use.

It’s almost an exaggeration to call it a shoestring operation.  It operates on virtually no money with a volunteer crew. (Disclosure: I’m part of the volunteer core group that tries to keep it growing.)

Given its almost non-existent resources and media blackout of antiwar actions, it’s first year record is somewhat remarkable.  There have been more than 1,200 actions in 41 states and 240 communities since the Moratorium began in September 2007.  No one really knows how many individuals also observe the Moratorium in some way on the Third Friday of the month,  but it’s a significant number.

As Iraq Moratorium #12 approaches, think about one thing, big or small, that you can do to help.  If nothing else, a donation would be gratefully accepted — and you don’t have to wait until August 15.

Whatever it is, please do something.

1 FBI used aggressive tactics in anthrax probe

By PETE YOST, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Before killing himself last week, Army scientist Bruce Ivins told friends that government agents had stalked him and his family for months, offered his son $2.5 million to rat him out and tried to turn his hospitalized daughter against him with photographs of dead anthrax victims.

The pressure on Ivins was extreme, a high-risk strategy that has failed the FBI before. The government was determined to find the villain in the 2001 anthrax attacks; it was too many years without a solution to the case that shocked and terrified a post-9/11 nation.

The last thing the FBI needed was another embarrassment. Overreaching damaged the FBI’s reputation in the high-profile investigations: the Centennial Olympic Park bombing probe that falsely accused Richard Jewell; the theft of nuclear secrets and botched prosecution of scientist Wen Ho Lee; and, in this same anthrax probe, the smearing of an innocent man – Ivins’ colleague Steven Hatfill.
