Death Vote 2008 – 2 Parties Enter – 1 Party Dies

As the cars roar into Pennsylvania, the cradle of liberty, it seems apparent that our citizens are staying off the streets, which may make scoring particularly difficult, even with this year’s rule changes.

To recap those revisions:

Women are still worth 10 points more than men in all age brackets, but teenagers now rack up 40 points, and toddlers under 12 now rate a big 70 points.

The big score: anyone, any sex, over 75 years old has been upped to 100 points.

Reports of my demise have been greatly accurate

I’ve left Daily Kos as “Major Danby”; my GBCW from that account is here.  It’s about time; that handle was going to keep on causing trouble for me, as people thought I was (or was pretending to be) former military, and the prospect of that becoming a campaign issue made settling it intolerable.

I’ll talk to buhdy about whether I will continue with that name here, when I’m here, or whether to switch entirely to a new account.  (I’d like to be able to do the former and yet retain the ability to come back and use the latter when I have to prove to people that yes I do have a coveted low-two-digit ID.)  While I have started a new account there (did some time ago, in fact, though I’ve scrupulously never used it) I’m going to lurk a DKos for the next three weeks, and possibly through next year’s elections, though knowing myself I highly doubt I’ll be able to withstand the urge to comment.  I may or may not participate or lurk here while I have computer access, which may be sporadic.

With so many of my friends here, I just wanted to let you all what’s going on.  (And the next person to call me “sir” has to clean the latrines.)  Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Markos on Olbermann on FISA Cave!

Funkalicious Friday: The Worlds Best Guitar Players?

Ah the endless worldshattering debate that dominated several minutes of my time in the summer of 1976! (when probably some of the people on these videos weren’t even born!!!) now comes to Funkalicious Friday!

Rejoice!

The Worlds Best Guitar Players: (According to some yahoo on youtube!)

Impeachment: Wexler Wants Hearings, and more!

Robert Wexler (D-FL-19), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, is pushing forward to hold hearings on the impeachment of Dick Cheney!

His reasoning:

Wexler wants hearings!  You can sign up in support of the call for hearings on the impeachment of Dick Cheney!

Real Change? Our Climate. Real Momentum? Global Warming.

The earth is close to if not past a tipping point on climate change, and what do the negotiators eco-saboteurs of the Bush administration do, why undermine any real commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, of course! And while The Guardian reports the World is poised to sign climate deal, it’s a watered down climate deal, Bush made sure of that. “Europe was reported tonight to have dropped its demands for a 25%-40% cut on 1990 levels by 2020, a proposal that was bitterly opposed by the US.” The Bush administration advocates “voluntary” haha cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

Congratulations, New Jersey!!

Yesterday I posted an essay announcing that New Jersey was about to legislatively abolish the death penalty.  I was elated.  Apparently, I was not alone.  Today the IHT reports:

Rome will light up the Colosseum in support of the planned abolishment of the death penalty in the U.S. state of New Jersey, a lay Roman Catholic organization said Friday.

The Sant’Egidio Community, which is at the forefront of an international anti-death penalty movement, said in a statement that the arena will be lit up when the state’s governor, Jon S. Corzine, signs the legislation within a week.

New Jersey is poised to become the first U.S. state in four decades to abolish the death penalty after votes by state legislators this week.

Sant’Egidio praised New Jersey’s decision, saying it is a “crucial passage” for a worldwide moratorium on capital punishment.

Rome’s Colosseum, once the arena for deadly gladiator combat and executions, has become a symbol of the fight against capital punishment. Since 1999, the first century monument has been bathed in golden light every time a death sentence is commuted somewhere in the world or a country abolishes capital punishment.

I am so happy that this news is receiving the response it deserves.  And I hope that those abolitionists who worked so very hard and consistently to bring about this legislation– that means you, too, Abe Bonowitz– are enjoying the fruits of their victory.  I also hope this will inspire all of the rest of us!

Friday Philosophy: A Letter and a Response

On Tuesday I received a letter from a former student at the University of Central Arkansas, where I transitioned from 1992 until 1994 and where I taught for six more years after that.  From time to time, people from that spacetime contact me.  There are other people at Daily Kos who have been faculty or students at UCA.  The memories of there/then are bittersweet.

It took several days for me to formulate a response.  I’d like to say that I was just too busy to write back immediately since it was Finals Week here at Bloomfield.

The truth is rather that it was too difficult to come up with any quick response…and that the letter deserved a more thoughtful response than what I could immediately come up with.

I’m not even sure if the response I finally came up with is appropriate or sufficient.  But it is what I have.

Pony Reindeer Party… Prancer. He’s one of Santa’s.

gotta tell you. this is one of my all-time favorite movies of any kind. it is funny and sweet and the little girl, jess, with her stuffed nose and nasal “sand_ta” brings joy to my heart and tears to my eyes.

i love the way it was filmed. the sense of time and place. hardship. being little and how the power of believing makes you powerful.

and even if you never saw the movie and will now look for it, you can watch the spoiler vid.  because i’m pretty sure you’d expect the ending. but maybe not expect how it makes you feel.
