My ’08 Prediction – Based Upon Observation

Now, I may be one of the few people who doesn’t have a whole degree of confidence in the ’08 Election in the United States.  I mean, just look at the Republican candidates- in what other Western nation but America could these yahoos even run for dog-catcher, let alone the highest office in the land, with access to the nuclear button?  The mind boggles.

Then, I look at the Democratic Candidates, and it is even more depressing…because there’s no way in hell I see the two current front-runners beating whatever sad-sack Republican they manage to prop up long enough for the ballots to be counted.

Follow me over the flip and I’ll tell you why, in startlingly short time.

Finally Ending The Death Penalty

On Thursday, the New Jersey legislature voted to end capital punishment in that state.  I was delighted by the breaking news, and posted an essay.  Yesterday, I learned that around the world, death penalty abolitionists were rejoicing and that in Italy the Coliseum was being illuminated in celebration.  I was delighted, and posted an essay.  Today my happiness continued.  The New York Times has an editorial about the death penalty.  It begins:

It took 31 years, but the moral bankruptcy, social imbalance, legal impracticality and ultimate futility of the death penalty has finally penetrated the consciences of lawmakers in one of the 37 states that arrogates to itself the right to execute human beings.

This week, the New Jersey Assembly and Senate passed a law abolishing the death penalty, and Gov. Jon Corzine, a staunch opponent of execution, promised to sign the measure very soon. That will make New Jersey the first state to strike the death penalty from its books since the Supreme Court set guidelines for the nation’s system of capital punishment three decades ago.

Some lawmakers voted out of principled opposition to the death penalty. Others felt that having the law on the books without enforcing it (New Jersey has had a moratorium on executions since 2006) made a mockery of their argument that it has deterrent value. Whatever the motivation of individual legislators, by forsaking a barbaric practice that grievously hurts the global reputation of the United States without advancing public safety, New Jersey has set a worthy example for the federal government, and for other states that have yet to abandon the creaky, error-prone machinery of death.

More over the jump.

Pony Party: Unicorns

A few words about unicorns. Apparently one of the reasons unicorns remain in the mythical realm is that Noah forgot to put them on the ark. I prefer to think they swam away during the great flood, did some body surfing and ended up in another world. They still visit occasionally don’t you know. If Jesus can show up as an image in a pancake in Florida, then I maintain that unicorns are still lurking around. Think of them as angels for the non-Christian set.

One legend about unicorns suggests that a beautiful woman named Elly with a wounded heart was healed by the tears of a unicorn.

There are purportedly biblical references in translation that refer to a unicorn like creature who possessed great strength and agility.

Somehow the unicorn also became associated with chaste love and faithful marriage. Ultimately, we like to invest great qualities in mystical creatures as perhaps a foreshadow of the reality that humans have so many failings and we like to think something out there somewhere does possess all of our good/noble qualities. I have no idea.

I have no idea what this next song really has to do with unicorns but it is funny….

Planet Unicorn….. Hey…..

If that tickled you… here is more about Planet Unicorn.

Thanks for peeking. Two more pony parties to come with more absolutely no deeper meaning at all! Please don’t rec pony party, hang out chit chat and then go have a look at the excellent offerings on our recent and rec’d list.

it’s a wonderful life

Driving home from work overwhelms me if I let it. I see the hundreds of drivers in their solitary cars, some passengers, few passengers. I realize I, too, am alone in my car on a drive that could be achieved with far less stress and daily environmental angst if a decent light rail or a well-planned bus system existed in the Northwest metropolis I live in. It takes an hour and a half one way and three buses to attempt to public transit it to work from where I live, and a mere fifteen to twenty minutes by car. I have a car to drive, which is either a hybrid or a beater Nissan Sentra, both of which cost way too much of my income in insurance and gas costs with two teenagers at home.

You – you said – what’d you say a minute ago? They had to wait and save their money before they even ought to think of a decent home. Wait? Wait for what? Until their children grow up and leave them? Until they’re so old and broken down that they… Do you know how long it takes a working man to save five thousand dollars?

Justice Dept. Seeks Delay on C.I.A. Inquiry

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department asked the House Intelligence Committee on Friday to postpone its investigation into the destruction of videotapes by the Central Intelligence Agency in 2005, saying the Congressional inquiry presented “significant risks” to its own preliminary investigation into the matter.

The department is taking an even harder line with other Congressional committees looking into the matter, and is refusing to provide information about any role it might have played in the destruction of the videotapes. The recordings covered hundreds of hours of interrogations of two operatives of Al Qaeda.

The Justice Department and the C.I.A.’s inspector general have begun a preliminary inquiry into the destruction of the tapes, and Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey said the department would not comply with Congressional requests for information now because of “our interest in avoiding any perception that our law enforcement decisions are subject to political influence.”

Nations Agree on Steps to Revive Climate Treaty

NUSA DUA, Indonesia – The world’s countries wrapped up two weeks of intense and at times emotional talks here on Saturday with a two-year timetable for reviving an ailing, aging climate treaty.

After negotiations went through the night on a compromise between the United States and Europe, an agreement appeared close at hand. But some developing countries remained dissatisfied with some aspects of the deal, including the help they would receive from rich countries.

American delegates then said they could not accept the compromise, leading to a series of verbal attacks on the country. But in a dramatic turnabout less than an hour later, the Americans reversed themselves, accepting the changes sought by the developing countries.

Following a speech by the representative of Papua New Guinea, where he called upon the United States to: “lead, follow or get out of the way:”

The United States made a dramatic reversal Saturday, first rejecting and then accepting a compromise to set the stage for intense negotiations in the next two years aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. The final result was a global warming pact that provides for negotiating rounds to conclude in 2009.

Hey, What’s Another Billion?

Congress just authorized more spending, so I ask, does anyone REALLY comprehend just how big a number a million or a billion truly are?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Democratic-led Congress authorized more Iraq war spending on Friday, sending President George W. Bush a defense bill requiring no change in strategy after failing again to impose a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawals.

The defense policy bill, approved 90-3 by the U.S. Senate, also expanded the size of the U.S. Army and set conditions on the Bush administration’s plan to build a missile defense system in Europe.

The measure already had passed the House of Representatives and now goes to Bush, who is expected to sign it into law. It authorizes Pentagon programs expected to cost $506.9 billion during fiscal 2008, which began in October.

The bill authorized another $189.4 billion for the Iraq and Afghan wars, for which Congress has already approved some $600 billion. But it does not deliver the new money. That is done by appropriations legislation at the center of a big dispute on Capitol Hill.

Bush asks, Congress delivers.
