Encrusted User Status

As you can see from the post on new Soapblox features on the Recommened List, we now have a Hidden Comments page and soon frequent users will have the ability to Hide Comments.

Even though we really don’t need it!

After some fireworks at the very beginning of the launch, Docudharma has been amazingly disruption free. Heck perhaps even TOO much, since people do seem to like the firefights and flamewars that go along with blogging. We have very little of that here, if any! Iow….you people are all WAY too nice to be bloggers!

I have actually considered launching  a series of ad hominem attacks on CAPS LOCK ON, 73rd Virgin, and a certain luminescent gherkin just to spice things up!

But I certainly enjoy the relative calm here and I know others do as well. If flamewars are what you are looking for, you can always go over to the Duchy of Orange and imply that one of the Big Three Candidates doesn’t brush their teeth before bed time. Bam! It’s like opening a can of Insta-Flame!!!

To tell the truth I am a little reluctant to institute community moderation. For those of you who don’t know, we had to eliminate the practice of hiding comments when we first opened due to Soapblox not having a page where the Admins could check to see what comments were being hidden…and why.

Without the ability to monitor the community moderation, it would be possible for the worst kind of abuses to occur. Such as, say…a small but incredibly dedicated gang of people banding together as some sort of amateur cops who constantly look for anything they find objectionable and determining the tone and content of the board by punitively downrating anything they don’t agree with…and then downrating anyone who uprates what they don’t don’t agree with. And labeling anyone who disagrees with them with the derogatory term… “troll.” Thus eliminating a healthy diversity of thought and driving people off the site with their obnoxious tactics of shame, mockery and insult, slowly transforming the board into their white-bread version of what they think a leftwing blog should be. All while deluding themselves that the judgment of a these few people actually represents the entire community of tens of thousands of users, just because the vast majority of folks have figured out it is just a huge waste of time to fight against the relentless attacks of their mob, especially when it is witch-hunt season.

Not that that sort of wild scenario would ever actually occur anywhere, hahaha! What a wild imagination I have!

I don’t think that will happen here, for two very good reasons.

First, we as a group have been very succesful at creating a Culture of Mutual Respect, instead of a Culture of Flaming Insults.

Second………..No Autoban.

Without the incentive of the power of being able to get someone banned by attacking and downrating them in howling packs until they breakdown and fight back….thus PROVING they are trolls by the mere act of defending themselves….I think we can avoid that behavior. Here, hiding comments has no power to get someone banned, other than calling that persons behavior to the attention of the admins, who will then confer as to what…if any…action should be taken. Community input on these decisions is ALWAYS welcomed, but the final decision will be that of the admins.

Here at Docudharma we will try our very best to ensure that the practice of Hiding Comments actually adheres to the stated goal at a site you all might be familiar with…Daily Kos.

From the oft quoted but seldom followed section on hiding comments from their FAQ:

To Troll Rate something has exactly one meaning. When you Troll Rate something, as a trusted user, you are stating that the comment should be made invisible to all site users. You’re saying that the comment is so bad — so disruptive or damaging to the community — that it isn’t worth even a debate, but should be deleted from the discussion as being simply inflammatory, simply off-topic, or simply a lie.

Remember that, because that is the only use of the troll rating. It is an editorial vote to delete a comment from the conversation.

Conversely, there is one particular reason troll ratings should never be used: to express disagreement with a poster’s opinion. If you disagree, you can say so, but so long as the commentor is stating their opinion civilly, merely disagreeing with your own opinion does not constitute being a “troll”.

(bolding mine)

It is the STRICT policy at Docudharma that rating a comment with a “0” or “hide” rating is NOT a form of punishment or a way to shame other posters.

Hiding a comment is NOT a punitive action.

It’s ONE AND ONLY function is to remove offensive comments from the view of the general public….and any comment you choose to rate “hide” should be truly offensive. NOT something you just find objectionable.

Please pardon my fervor and my very strong statement on this point!

….but I mean it!

The overuse, and punitive use, and use of the “troll” or “hide” rating as a debating tactic  is the ugly downside of the community moderation system and the source of much incredibly silly debate, and essentially a form of humiliation…. and I REALLY don’t want that custom to migrate to Docudharma.

For that reason it will also be more difficult to obtain “Trusted User” status here…you will have to have been hanging around here quite a bit…thus my favored term for such responsible users here….The Encrusted User….indicating that said user has been here long enough and often enough to become encrusted with the tasty morsels of responsible userdom. More difficult, but not by any means impossible to obtain, as most of you will soon find out!

Normally I would try to soften such a stern statement as this at the end of the piece…but as you can tell I feel very strongly about this! I love Daily Kos dearly except for one thing…the abuse of community moderation leading to marginalization and the forming of ratings cliques. So I will not soften this statement at all.

At Docudharma, hiding comments should be a very, VERY rare occurrence.

Not something casually done at all. Not something done out of anger or pique.

Please use your soon to be achieved Encrusted User status wisely!

(ps, I am also open to changing the name!)

Is the Pony/Pie/Hide rating system too cutsie?

The respectful disagreement here is one of the things I LOVE about this site.  I feel so much freer to say what I’m thinking, without being attacked by a band of hunters.

I think it should be pointed out that with this system its easier to make a mistake on rating.  If you scroll at all, before you click, it will change it to something you didn’t mean.

  3. The packs else where are disgusting, and succeeding in whittling down the herd of people of good spirit to those who are either required to fight off inane or vicious attacks or those are docile. It splits community and stops debate or fun.

I like the wrong button choice better then troll because one can be wrong and not a demonic critter under a bridge. A question if you hit wrong does this have the effect of taking away mojo or is mojo not a concept here. However your rating system works it’s liberating to say the least. BTW you did an excellent job right off the bat of eliminating the onslaught of nasties with your dragon breath.

  5. The number of TRs I’ve ever given at dKos is still in the single digits.

    Over here?  Heh.

Overall, something tells me this may end up being the least used feature of any blog, anywhere.

  8. I was hoping that this was a joke especially after what I posted last night.

Sadly it wasn’t.  Have fun thinking up names for shit.

I have a war to stop.

  9. You’ve addressed most of my own concerns about the policing of a site and who should be able to do it.

And calling someone a troll for namecalling Is namecalling.

  10. I trust you haven’t missed me.  Net problems then Weekend News Digest.

I renew my plea to call them Community Moderators.

Other than that I’ll give you a few more minutes of mercy while I finish up the Science section.
