We’re Doomed.

One of the terms I use for my various sigs is “Never trust any organization bigger than two, and even those are suspect.”  I’ve never read it anywhere, so I think it’s an original (if not, please send me the citation).

I’m an anarchist at heart.  Not the bomb throwing type, of course.  I think that any grouping of three or more humans (or groups of humans) will lead toward someone getting stabbed in the back.  I do think it’s human nature for that to happen.  We’re, well at least most of us, competitive and ruthless.  We seek gain however we can get it.  Sometimes the gain is good for almost everybody, but I don’t believe that that’s the goal of the gain.  If it happens, we can feel better about ourselves, but it’s the gain that counts.

There have been a few, here and there, that have transcended this human tendancy.  I happen to think Buddha was one, and through his teachings Alexander was on his way there before he died (through the conduit of Kalanos, the monk who travelled with him back from India), and Asoka embraced them probably as fully as any leader ever has.  Gandhi was probably the last major leader who was of this type, and he was assasinated.

What does this have to do with anything?  Not much, other than I think we’re past being able to save ourselves.  I think we will go to war with Iran, for a cheap political gain for the Repugs, and I think the Russians will retaliate (and I think that they will feel like they are forced to).  Retaliation leads to WW III/IV (depending on if you think of the Cold War as WW III), which will leave most of us dead.

Right now, I don’t trust that the Democratic controlled Congress will do anything of real measure to block this war from coming.  The only way that this would happen is for impeachment proceedings to begin against Dick and W.  I have faith in Dennis Kucinich to bring those proceedings forward via privilaged resolution, since it’s the only way such proceedings will see the light of day, but I don’t think that the Democrats in the House will go along with it.  Hence, I think we’re stuck with Dick and W until they decide to leave office, which I think war with Iran will preclude.  I suppose we could hope for a military coup, but I’ve not seen anybody in uniform that I would trust to hold such power, and so I think we’d end up in the same situation.

As for the Dem power structure, I’ve become convinced that the various cavings haven’t been cavings at all.  I think that the leadership in Congress, and most of the other candidats for President (I’m still thinking Mike wouldn’t do it, but I think only he and Dennis wouldn’t) want to have that power should they be elected.  I don’t trust Clinton, Obama or Edwards any farther than I could throw them.  Richardson is part of the Clinton camp.  Biden’s crazy and is part of the power structure, as is Dodd (though Chris might not be crazy).  The only Repug worth even thinking about is Ron Paul, and the country would break up under his leadership.

So, where does this leave us?  Like the title says, we’re doomed.  I hope I’m wrong.

Is the Pony/Pie/Hide rating system too cutsie?

  1. For those of us who feel doomed!

  2. People are basically no damned good. And yet… sometimes they are amazingly good, even in groups of many.

In the long run I think that the American empire is doomed, and along with it the once great experiment in governance called democracy. The institutional foundations of America are doomed.

I guess it is all how one chooses to look at it. I mean, we all know we are going to die someday, we all know we are individually doomed, but we keep keeping on, most of us at least, till we reach that day.

America is a nightmare and America is doomed, but we can choose to see this period of decline as an opportunity to create something, an idea, a work of art, a new technology, an essense of who we are and what we want the world to have in the future, whether or not we know if it will still be there.

The world is going to hell in a handbasket. Why not make a stronger basket for the future that others can use to appreciate their ride? And who knows where that ride will take them?

    Where’s the wine bottle?  I don’t care if it’s only 5:30 in the A.M.

  3. NO to doomed.

    See why above.
