Because really, what else is there left to do?

Some insane Democrats have just insanely voted for an insane bill to insanely approve THREATENING Iran, which is insanely similar in enough symbolic ways to the insane AUMF to make the use of the word insane.....mandatory. And of course, the Republicans are insane too, but we all knew that. Our government is yet again ratcheting up its War Machine to attack yet another sovereign nation that has taken no direct action to harm us.

Combined with continuously giving unconditional blood money to Bush, and the FISA debacle and SOOOO many other just.....insane....actions they have taken and sane ones they have not taken.....how can anyone have ANY hope that the Democrats as a whole will in any way oppose Bush? And if THEY don't oppose Bush, oppose war with Iran, oppose $200 Billion to kill Iraqis.....who will?

Where does that leave us....the sane people of the world? What choices do we have left?

How can we let them know of our disapproval?

How can we repudiate this latest insanity?

How can WE oppose Bush, since they won't?

How do we keep the Blood off of our hands?

A refusal to participate in the system is all we have left.

There is a call for a general strike on November 6, 2007.

Don't go to work. Don't buy anything. Simple.

Tell everyone you know to do the same. Write about it. Do it.

What else is left to us to do, besides surrender and admit that we have NO power, NO voice, and NO chance for ever changing anything.

I refuse.

Uh...FYI... (4.00 / 6)
November 6th is election day, as in voting in your local elections. It might be a good day go do THAT, no?

Yup...........If you read the link (4.00 / 9)

I ALWAYS support voting.

Sorry, too depressed to read. (4.00 / 6)
Lame but true.

And to top off this crap day, my candidate for Congressional District 4 in Colorado chose today to drop out of the race. She came within 2 1/2 points of taking out Musgrave last time around, decided to run again, and just got an unbeatable job offer to work with an international organization so has decided to drop out of the 3 way Democratic primary.

I'm having a rough day. Sue me for being a bad reader.

Voting Day should be a holiday (4.00 / 3)

mmm (4.00 / 7)
not all Democrats voted for this. And I'm not sure this message will be received by the appropriate people. I suggest making some day, probably not election day, a mass Progressives to Congress Day, and get as many people to meet in person with their representatives on one day or week as possible, either in DC or in their home districts, with specific demands, petitions, even, votes that we demand be made. A specific agenda presented en masse, in person, face to face. This new progressive movement has not tried this. Until it's tried, then we ARE giving up.

I think it is past being about the Dems (4.00 / 4)
Its about the system itself....the Dems are a symptom at this point.

Your idea is great, though! How can we help to organize that?

I have NO objection to doing whatever we can to get them to come around and am interested in trying ALL approaches.

We need to send the whole system a message though. We do NOT support what you are doing.

Strikes and demonstrations are all we have to do that.

Reality is the result of war between two rival groups of programmers,

[ Parent ]
how to organize? (4.00 / 1)
Well that's a good question. Somehow progressive would have to agree on the agenda, first of all....which we all know would be no simple task. And then we need to figure out when Congress is in session and pick a good week. Need to research exact legislation and votes that we would request, and then do a how-to about how to get appointments with your Congresscritters, and then blog the sh*t out of it. The first one is the tricky one....

Perhaps not legally, but the symbolism scrares the crap outta me.

'And I'm neither left or right, I'm just staying home tonight, getting lost in that hopeless little screen.' Leonard Cohen - Democracy

[ Parent ]
That is not authorization to (4.00 / 3)
attack Iran.

Designating IRG a terrorist organization, which it may very well be, does not provide authorization for striking even the IRG anywhere.

It has consequences, in theory, for seizing IRG assets in the US, but since there are almost certainly none, it is an empty statement.

[ Parent ]
I would go further (4.00 / 8)
It is a dangerous step to take, even though not an enforceable authorization, as the Bush Administration will not do more and more vigorous diplomacy as a result, instead it will use this to ratchet up the war talk.

It was a contemptible resolution and hillary Clinton made a huge mistake.

[ Parent ]
No (4.00 / 3)
Technically, the fact that it is a State of the Senate Resolution means it lacks authorization for much of anything, as I understand it. Even if they left in the 2 paragraphs deleted.

But - the neocon's in the Bush Administration already believe they have the inherent authority to attack Iran as part of the original AUMF. This type of nonsense provides them with more ammunition if they decide to act on their impulses.

Imagine if you will the following worst case scenario:

1) Something happens to Bush
2) Cheney takes over for the balance of the term
3) Cheney orders air strikes on Iran, using the justification of a) AUMF, b) inherent Presidential authority, c) Senate 'agreement' as voiced in Ammendment 3017 (this bill)

So now what? Do the generals comply?

Like I said, the symbolism scares the crap outta me.

'And I'm neither left or right, I'm just staying home tonight, getting lost in that hopeless little screen.' Leonard Cohen - Democracy

[ Parent ]
I disagree with this (4.00 / 1)
But - the neocon's in the Bush Administration already believe they have the inherent authority to attack Iran as part of the original AUMF. This type of nonsense provides them with more ammunition if they decide to act on their impulses.

That is not true. Do you have a link for that?

The road to war with Iran runs through Iraq AUMF, which means they need an Iraq Debacle based provocation.

"as usual, . . . analytical and calm"

[ Parent ]
Here's a link (4.00 / 2)
to Glenn Greenwald where he talked about it.

This one talks mostly about inherent authority and dismisses AUMF authority, with this quote:

The only time previously that I am aware of when a top Bush official was asked that question was when Condoleezza Rice appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in April, 2006October, 2005. She suggested (albeit evasively) that the President had the inherent power to attack Iran:

Last October, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was asked by members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee whether the president would circumvent congressional authorization if the White House chose military action against Iran or Syria. She answered, "I will not say anything that constrains his authority as commander-in-chief."

When pressed by Senator Paul Sarbanes about whether the administration can exercise a military option without an authorization from Congress, Rice replied, "The president never takes any option off the table, and he shouldn't."

and then there is this one talking about the AUMF authority.

The AUMF does NOT provide authority in my opinion, but Cheney and Co believe it does. Or at least they'll argue the point as the bombs are dropping.

Due respect (0.00 / 0)
I saw that from Glenn and  the links simply do not say what he says they say.

Do you have anything else?

"as usual, . . . analytical and calm"

[ Parent ]
The 2nd link (0.00 / 0)
Has this paragraph (my emphasis):

In doing so, the Joint Resolution expressly delegated to the president alone the discretion to determine against whom to use force in defending the United States against international terrorism. Under this reading of the AUMF, by taking necessary steps to interdict fighters, materiel, and money flowing from Iran to Iraq, and to assure that eventually Iranian tactical nuclear weapons are not used against American interests there, here, or anywhere else, president Bush would be acting well within the AUMF's delegation to him by Congress of the power to deter and prevent nations from making future attacks.

Sorry I wasn't able to get this one up earlier.

This in a nutshell is the Yoo / Cheney reading of the original AUMF. It is beyond the scope of the authorization, but my point is they have gone to the trouble of laying out, legally, why they believe they can attack Iran under the original.

Now, you and I both know this is bogus, but my fear is things like today have a potential cumulative effect, one that they will use after the fact to justify their non-Congressionally authorized first strike.

We should stay out of this bogus story line.

In any case, it does appear this neo-con view is not Bush's operating approach today. I hope it doesn't become the approach tomorrow.

Some things to consider! (4.00 / 1)

Here is the text of the Authorization for Use of Military Force:

"Authorization for Use of Military Force
September 18, 2001
Public Law 107-40 [S. J. RES. 23]

107th CONGRESS
JOINT RESOLUTION
To authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States.

Whereas, on September 11, 2001, acts of treacherous violence were committed against the United States and its citizens; and
Whereas, such acts render it both necessary and appropriate that the United States exercise its rights to self-defense and to protect United States citizens both at home and abroad; and

Whereas, in light of the threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by these grave acts of violence; and

Whereas, such acts continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States; and

Whereas, the President has authority under the Constitution to take action to deter and prevent acts of international terrorism against the United States: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This joint resolution may be cited as the `Authorization for Use of Military Force'.
SEC. 2. AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES.

(a) IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.

(b) War Powers Resolution Requirements-
(1) SPECIFIC STATUTORY AUTHORIZATION- Consistent with section 8(a)(1) of the War Powers Resolution, the Congress declares that this section is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization within the meaning of section 5(b) of the War Powers Resolution.

(2) APPLICABILITY OF OTHER REQUIREMENTS- Nothing in this resolution supercedes any requirement of the War Powers Resolution.
Approved September 18, 2001.
Now, some language from the War Powers Resolution:
". . . .(c) The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces.
". . . .REPORTING
SEC. 4. (a) In the absence of a declaration of war, in any case in which United States Armed Forces are introduced--
(1) into hostilities or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances;
(2) into the territory, airspace or waters of a foreign nation, while equipped for combat, except for deployments which relate solely to supply, replacement, repair, or training of such forces; or
(3) in numbers which substantially enlarge United States Armed Forces equipped for combat already located in a foreign nation; the president shall submit within 48 hours to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and to the President pro tempore of the Senate a report, in writing, setting forth--
(A) the circumstances necessitating the introduction of United States Armed Forces;
(B) the constitutional and legislative authority under which such introduction took place; and
(C) the estimated scope and duration of the hostilities or involvement. . . .
. . . .(c) Notwithstanding subsection (b), at any time that United States Armed Forces are engaged in hostilities outside the territory of the United States, its possessions and territories without a declaration of war or specific statutory authorization, such forces shall be removed by the President if the Congress so directs by concurrent resolution. . . ."
Bush declared a National Emergency on September 14, 2001:
"Declaration of National Emergency by Reason Of Certain Terrorist Attacks

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

A national emergency exists by reason of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, New York, New York, and the Pentagon, and the continuing and immediate threat of further attacks on the United States. . . . "

So, accordingly, all that Bush accomplished was done pursuant to the War Powers Resolution and his Declaration of National Emergency. Bush renewed the Declaration of National Emergency on
November 6, 2002. To my knowledge, it has not been rescinded.

The AUMF was authorized in accordance with:
"SEC. 2. AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES.
(a) IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, . . . ." (above).

We all know the enormous attempts Bush made to connect Iraq and Saddam Hussein to 9/11. We also know that there was absolutely no connection of Saddam Hussein and Iraq to 9/11, nor any truth to any of the other reasons given as a reason to use military force on Iraq. So, it does seem that the AUMF could be stricken on that basis and, certainly, Iran cannot be connected to 9/11 either.

I am sorry for the length of this, but I think it important to know just where we are!

I don't think it designates the IRG as a (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
It simply does not say (4.00 / 7)
you can or should attack Iran. One can argue that in fact, it states the opposite, that you must redouble diplomacy.

See the statements cited in the beginning on this point.

There simply is nothing in this resolution that could conceivably be argued to authorize attacking Iran.

It is still a terrible resolution and should have been voted down, but it is NOT an authorization to use force.

Even if it were an actual enabling resolution as opposed to a Sense of the Senate piece.

I agree with the notion of "STIKE" -- the French have (4.00 / 1)
been doing that for a long time -- and it is effective!

The problem we have here in Amerika in that respect is people who are so in fear of their jobs. It's an employers' market, first of all.  And employers really don't care what happens to employees!  Most Americans are just trying to hang onto their jobs, knowing the precarious environment.  Most employers are of Republican thinking and they have been further enabled by BushCo.

Please don't get me wrong, I am for every progressive action we can think of to try and correct the ills of our Country, but, I am also cognizant of the many fears of the average American.  They are afraid!  I know, I was a "leper" in this midst! One doesn't have to (4.00 / 2)
be a progressive (or anything) to show solidarity with the concept, I would think.

There are a lot of republicans who oppose this war too.

And isn't it convenient that GM is already on strike? Coincidence? I think not... ;-)

How many workers will walk out and be able to walk back in? Only 20% of workers have any kind of collective representation, and I doubt that a wildcat strike is authorized in any contract.  The NLRB is strongly on the side of employers.

Been there and done that.  Without a critical mass and adequate preparation, this is just another impotent outrage post with no real meaning and no real activism as an underpinning.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H. L. Mencken

You went from:

Strike -----> Ball

I'll try:

Ball ------> Nut

(as in 'These Democrats keep hitting us in the ----'s with these stupid votes)

Who's next?

OK... instead of "Blow"... how about "Sucks" as in:

Job ---> Sucks? (And won't we get thrown outa here for this?)

And we're right back where we started.

Don't ask me how, but I had this feeling we would eventually be able to close the loop.

Cheers.
