(midnight - promoted by ek hornbeck)

I mentioned Tibetan singing bowls a few nights ago, and got some lovely responses.  Here's a glimpse of what can be done with them:

Youffraita :: Tibetan Singing Bowls

The best bowls, or so I have read, when filled with water and then played, will create a sort of fountain.  I don't know...I've never tried it (& my singing bowl is not one of the best)...but they can be very beautiful, and terrific aids to meditation.

And let's conclude with a master of this art:

The best make such beautiful music.

Hey, thanks, ek! (4.00 / 4)
What a surprise!

Nice, Youffraita! (4.00 / 1)
How do know which are good videos if you can't watch videos?

erm...A famous (4.00 / 1)
science fiction editor, back in the day, when asked how he knew a manuscript wasn't very good without reading the entire novel, said, "You don't have to eat a whole egg to know that it's rotten."

I give the videos the "sentence" test.  In the case of Chuck Jones cartoons, well, it's a no-brainer: they are terrific.  But otherwise: if it "reads" well quickly, it's probably all right.

(In other cases, I stick to videos that I watched when my computer was totally functional.)

Just tugging your chain a little, is all. ;-) (4.00 / 1)

P.S.: I'm okay if the (4.00 / 1)
video is two minutes or less.  And I can usually tell whether something is terrible in the first minute & a half.  This actually came up in an editorial meeting I attended: we are looking for a reason to say "no" on any given manuscript.  And the terrible ones--be they mss, clips, demos, or whatever--usually give you that reason to say no within a few pages/seconds/minutes.

We are talking pop culture here, after all, not Serious Art (lol).

The bowls remind me (4.00 / 1)
of Aeolian harmonic wind harps...

One instrument that uses the Aeolian effect is the Grand Aeolian Harp pictured here, and other wind harps available from HarmonicWindHarps.com

Definite similarity there, yes (4.00 / 1)
But with the singing bowls, the player can affect the tone: I have struck them and also played them around the lip, and done a combo of the two, depending on the effect I wanted/needed.  I have also read that Tibetan monks have used their singing bowls as begging bowls (but I don't remember whether they did that for political reasons: ie, whether the Chinese government actually banned the bowls.  Wouldn't surprise me if they did.)

Youffraita,
I listened to  the video that was up yesterday & went to a larger selection on youtube.
The resonance & harmonics of such long duration really surprised me.
Very cool.
I was imagining the cacophony in his mom`s kitchen when as a child, he`d have all the pots & pans out, beating them with a wooden mixing spoon.
He is deaf now from that, you know.

(not)

I`m already against the next war.
