From President-Elect Obama's Change.org
"Ideas For Change In America"
Appoint a Special Prosecutor for the Crimes of the Bush Administration:

President-elect Obama recently said, "if I found out that there were high officials who knowingly, consciously broke existing laws, engaged in coverups of those crimes with knowledge forefront, then I think a basic principle of our Constitution is nobody above the law."

Attorney General-designate Eric Holder recently said top Bush Administration officials "authorized the use of torture, approved of secret electronic surveillance of American citizens, secretly detained American citizens without due process of law, denied the Writ of Habeus Corpus to hundreds of accused enemy combatants, and authorized the use of procedures that both violate international law and the United States Constitution."

The Bush administration has refused to investigate its own crimes and President Bush may issue blanket pardons before he leaves. President Obama must appoint a Special Prosecutor - ideally Patrick Fitzgerald - to fully investigate these crimes and prosecute those responsible to demonstrate that we are truly a Nation of Laws and no one - including the President - is above the law.

Cool, Edger (4.00 / 18)
I just signed the petition, in fact.  Have to leave for work in a couple of minutes...has anybody contacted digby or Jane Hamsher to include the badge on their sites?  I assume that buhdy or ek or somebody is in contact with Big Orange.

Oh, yeah, and I'll bet Crooks & Liars would get on board, too.

Nice going, Edger! (4.00 / 5)
It looks good -- super job -- I've signed.

BTW, I've been to Change.gov, as well, (4.00 / 4)
and signed.

I guess the Move-On people (requested by Move-On to state three most imporant issues for 2009 agenda) are considerably different on this issue:  Move-On's Top Priorities for 2009.

Hey, edger (4.00 / 1)
any way we can use that on face book pages?

It should embed there (0.00 / 0)
just like on any other site, Lisa.

ha, i now have a top story for oND (4.00 / 4)
petition signed, commented, and ready to round up some more signatures!

Great! (4.00 / 3)
I sent an email to Alexa about it too, included in an email to the OOIBC members list.

What time do you post OND? (4.00 / 4)

[ Parent ]
around 9 pm pst (4.00 / 3)
i always pray that the GOS shredder lets me post timely!

[ Parent ]
pd, i commented about this below, but in case you check back here before (4.00 / 4)
you publish the ond, here is a link to a great speech given by holder at a convention of the american constitution society this past summer.  i think it is something anyone signing the petition would appreciate.  http://acslaw.org/node/6720

thanks. just got back here now. glad you posted in the (4.00 / 2)
thread.

the dk shredder would not accept the graphic (4.00 / 2)
something about coding not allowed. i explain a little in my top news story re this petition.

[ Parent ]
Thanks, PD (4.00 / 2)
I had forgotten that DD is not a site that is on the dKos list of approved image host sites, like photobucket, flickr and a few others. They do that there so that people can't hotlink to images on most sites.

I've updated the embed code, so it will work for you now. Just copy and paste from the gray box up above.

I've tested it. The badge code will work both in diaries, and in comments, at dKos now.

great job, edger! (4.00 / 3)
and now it's time to do my part.

Market penetration? ;-) (4.00 / 3)
Google Blog Search for "Special Prosecutor" returns 133,506 hits, with this petition at the top of the first page.

Google Web Search for "Petition Special Prosecutor" returns 2,080,000 hits, with us at the top of the first page again.

I'd probably want land in Paraguay too, if I was Bush. ;-)

best 20 minutes i've spent in awhile (4.00 / 3)
a friend sent this link to a speech eric holder gave this summer at an american constitution society convention:

http://acslaw.org/node/6720

well worth the listen for those who want to become better acquainted with holder and wonder how he is likely to receive this petition.   no wonder specter wants to delay the confirmation process.

Nice speech.... (4.00 / 2)
He's a fast sharp mind, it appears. He doesn't come across as a wiggly goofy acolyte wagging his tail for his boss like Gonzo did, or like a Frank Nitti-ish enforcer for Bush kind of character the way Mukasey appears to me.

I guess his response (or non-response) to this petition will tell us more about whether words mean something to him or are just words.

[ Parent ]
yes, it is like a breath of fresh air - (4.00 / 3)
or a mirage - after the last eight years.  he seems real. like one of us.

the petition will be very telling.  i see the signatures are building.  am meting out my blasts so that verizon doesn't put my account on ice for spamming.  i am wondering if there is a plan for promoting it on other blogs.  i've been out of the loop for the last week or so of enforced internet restriction and don't know if a plan was formulated.  need to read through the last essay before the petition went live.

There's a good Photo Gallery (4.00 / 2)
of Holder with others, here...

edger, sorry to be such an internet illiterate, but (4.00 / 2)
if i include the code in an email blast, will the badge show up?  ditto on making comments on sites like dkos, etc.

"We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call; no way out, just the upstairs window to look out of while the fire burns the house down with us trapped, locked in it."  -Tennessee Williams

It should, yes. (0.00 / 0)
The badge code is just simple html image code. There is no javascript or flash in it.

If you can put other images in your email blasts then this will work also.

[ Parent ]
If you're using MS Outlook for email (4.00 / 1)
you don't even need to deal with the badge code.

You can just hold your left mouse button down and drag it across the badge until both the large button and the smaller "Get Badge" buttons are highlighted, then hit ctrl-c to copy it, then go to your email and hit ctrl-v in your email to paste it.

i was just writing in another comment (4.00 / 2)
wondering if a plan had been formulate for outreach.  what i think is that we need to build signatures and then send it to congress and the media so that they do not blow it off as a minority concern.

wexler sent out an email this past week re a special prosecutor and there are now 9-10 cosponsors on jerry nadler's h res 1531 and i understand he will be introducing another resolution in the 111th congress.

my question is - what can be done using the blogs to promote this?  i am sending to my lists today.  bob fertik has it at the top of the page of democrats.com and he also sends out blasts to democrats.com members and i will ask him if he plans to send out a blast supporting it.  i will also ask david swanson if he will do the same through afterdowningstreet.  i didn't see meteor blades at dkos last night and wonder if he might be traveling for the holidays, but it woudl be great to get a shout out from him (and kagro x and mcjoan (not sure where she is on this)).  what about people like armando and others at talkleft, openleft, fdl, digby, etc. - are they in favor of a special prosecutor?  would they be likely to include the badge on their sites?  who is the best person to ask each of them?

well, this comment didn't belong here, but here it is so.... (4.00 / 2)
anyway back to email.  when i include images i do it as jpeg attachments so this will be an experiment.  i'll let you know if it works.  also i work on a mac so no outlook and no left click.  we'll see how it goes....

And yes, it will work in comments or diaries now. (4.00 / 2)
At dkos also, as well as here or anywhere else.

Senator Levin spoke of "Indictments" re: Cheney's admission (4.00 / 3)
Senator Levin says indictments could be on the way:

"...In case you missed it, Dick Cheney recently admitted to authorizing torture, which is a war crime. While making an appearance on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show this past Wednesday, Senator Carl Levin said that Cheney's admission was nothing short of a confession...Levin spoke on the need for further investigations, and the ultimate necessity for indictments in order to hold those responsible for torture policies accountable. Levin was hopeful that the Obama administration would take some major steps on the issue, seeing as how the current Justice Department is not willing to do so. He also talked about the need for an independent commission that could be appointed by the Obama administration to examine the role of the CIA in the treatment of U.S. detainees, since their role has not yet been made clear. Levin concluded by saying that, with all the facts, they may or may not lead to indictments, or possibly civil action..."

I'm not sure if the Petition is only being forwarded to Holder/Obama?  It might be helpful to forward that petition to members of Congress too, including Levin, Conyers, etc.

Good thinking! All media, too? (4.00 / 2)

[ Parent ]
the comment i wrote above was supposed to go here (4.00 / 3)
glad to hear others are thinking similarly.  i have been out of the loop and wondering if a plan had been formulated for outreach.  chances are it is in the 85 comments in the essay that was published just prior to the petition going live.

my two cents:  what i think is that we need to build signatures and then send it to congress and the media so that they do not blow it off as a minority concern.

If This Were A Dictatorship It Would Be A Heck Of A Lot Easier... (4.00 / 4)
BushBoy managed to say that without a single slip up... go figure!

Sigh... What was it ol' Joe Stalin said?

For some people, four walls are three too many

The badge and html are up on my main site now.

Here's MY take on what should be done, but jail time will have to suffice, because this IS NOT a dictatorship.

Apparently, George W. Bush, EX-Prez, will be moving to Dallas and maybe later, we'll have to send military Special Operations Group ops to his nation-like spread in Paraguay where they will engage BlackwaterParaguay in a bloodletting firefight, RENDIT him...

In other words stuff him in that ol' Gulfstream V blindfolded, strapped to a waterboard... Bring him to trial for TREASON, and... on the gallows (Where I'm SURE he won't show the same grace and composure as Saddam Hussein) we'll all stand around him chanting, no, not "...Muqtada Muqtada Muqtada..." but "...Wellstone Morse Kucinich...".

Be SURE to bring your cellie camera for a quick pic when the trap door opens and get yer souvenir, a precious memento of Global Justice being exacted on an appropriate party... George W. Bush.)
