BentLiberal :: America is Blue, Baby!

statemapTwo plus years ago, I wrote a diary Debunking the Myth of RedState America.

Whoever said a picture is worth a thousand words wasn't kidding. In 2004 Kossacks and the world waited anxiously for the U.S. Presidential results. And no matter where you viewed them, it's almost certain you saw a map like this one.

county map - Bush Country (credit - Democracy Now)As you probably know, maps like this (and the even more distorted county map, right) paint an unfair picture of the political demographics of the United States. Republicans and the traditional media exploited these maps to spread lies and deceptions about the size of the Republican "victory" and the "mandate" they didn't actually earn.

2008 electoral state mapThe 2008 map is also flawed in overstating Republican strength.

So why are these maps wrong and how do they distort reality? The answer is that they give a geographical representation of statistics that are actually about people, and give an appearance of Republican strength that's vastly over-rated.

pop. mapA quick look at a simple population map of the U.S. (1 dot = 7500 people) shows why - a large portion of Republican "strength" is actualy in the least populated portion of the country.

Or to put it more simply - large geographic areas with small population don't really equate to votes!

To overcome this bias in the maps, we use a cartogram, which changes the size of a state to represent its population. (huh?)

Check it out:

2008 electoral state mapLooking at this map it gives the impression that the Republicans won the election handily, since there is rather more red on the map than there is blue. In fact, however, the reverse is true - the Democrats won by a substantial margin. The explanation for this apparent paradox, as pointed out by many people, is that the map fails to take account of the population distribution

cartogramWe can correct for this by making use of a cartogram, a map in which the sizes of states are rescaled according to their population ...

On such a map, for example, the state of Rhode Island, with its 1.1 million inhabitants, would appear about twice the size of Wyoming, which has half a million, even though Wyoming has 60 times the acreage of Rhode Island.

We should all take pride in the blu-ing of America.

Now let's go out and advocate with progressive voice to our friends in Congress and (soon to be) in the BlueWhite House!

Good to be back here again!

Fresh out of sig. ideas

If you're around... (4.00 / 6)

I dunno. (4.00 / 6)
That and the title- America is Blue Baby is really compelling to me.

You could do a seperate one, but I want that map on the front page.

I think you mean "this" (4.00 / 6)
And I agree the cartogram should be fp, if "it" goes fp, but you could always just add a copy to the top... keep the flow of the essay, and all (like I'm a friggin' editor...)

I also like the maps (4.00 / 5)
that show red/blue within the states. Haven't traveled around the nets enough to see one of those for this election yet, but even the red states have large pockets of blue in them. Of course, that also means seeing the red areas in states like mine (Minnesota), but still...the blue is in the high population areas.

Nice Map (4.00 / 7)
Shows the reality of the win.

Saw a map yesterday at the orange place that showed counties which voted more rethug and more Democrat this cycle. Most of the counties in the country got Bluer, even in red states, the ones that got redder were in Appalachia through north Texas and into Oklahoma. The cumulative map was mostly Blue- very nice on the eyes.

So, you mean that folks who have 10 acres (4.00 / 7)
of farmland surrounding them don't count any more than someone living in a 600 sq ft apartment?

Say it ain't so!

Very cool, Bent Liberal. (4.00 / 9)
Reproduced part of it on OOIBC and on They gave us a republic... with hat tip and links to you here.

And here is something related...

From Larisa Alexandrovna at-Largely this morning...

Sarah Palin has told us over and over that she represents real Americans. So consider this very interesting analysis from New York Times, showing the areas of America that delivered more Republican votes than in 2004:

In comparison, look at the below map showing where there was an increase in Democratic voters:

Um, Sarah, looks like your real America is a tiny strip where mountain folk still dwell.

When I look at that second map (4.00 / 5)
I think of something a pundit said (can't remember who) about how the Repugs are the party of older white men and that is NOT a winning coalition. She/he followed it up by saying that if they don't change, next election they're likely to loose Texas where over 30% of the population is Latino. Look at how blue Texas is turning - YIPEEEE!!!!

That's where "real" Texans live! ;-) (4.00 / 4)

Thanks, Edger (4.00 / 5)
I would have missed that.  Between those maps and BL's, this essay has brought a smile to my face.  w00t! as Ria would say.

Not just mountain folk (4.00 / 6)
Long Island still has a lot of red. Most of it in households making over $200,000 a year.

The very rich and the very rural. Not what I'd call a recipe for success in the long term. The world's longest con game/pyramid scheme is coming to an end.

I was out early this morning (4.00 / 6)
and I could see chunks of the sky falling off in the distance...

Heh! ;-)

I live in a blue dot (4.00 / 3)
surrounded by a very red county.  As expected, the county went for McPain--but by a much smaller margin than they went GOP in the past.

heh.
