as far as herbicides go

when someone sprays herbicide near me, namely roundup, my lips tingle and my tongue goes numb. It can't be good for people or bees. The lawn is beautiful. Tipped and rec'd. Keep those bees swarming!

people should be listening to anothers point of view & be civil in answering (yes, sometimes it sounds stilted because one is trying so to NOT let emotion thru! & that's OK!) not saying in effect 'you're wrong'.........
it is all about consideration of each others views.....
respect.
i do not think anyone here expects every opinion to coincide (a disturbing shade of grey~ugh!) or fit together like puzzle pieces...(it would produce an amazing tapestry of liberalism though!)
but i DO think everyone should have space to voice their opinion, show their side....& others can agree(if they do) or ask questions in order to gain a better understanding of anothers views.....

"Letters from Cuba"

I was lucky enough to see this at the Signature Theater when it premiered. It made me cry (which I valiantly tried to hide from my friend David, who bought the tickets and took me).

A snippet from the NYT review:

The play's structure is careful and complex. It draws on actual letters Ms. Fornes received from Havana over 30 years, and time moves across decades on the Cuban roof. But in New York the action seemingly spans only months.

One of the letters thanks Ms. Fornes for the gift of a can of (I think) string beans...and mentions how much they were grateful for the can...and its many uses...after they ate the string beans. The review does not mention this...but it's the point at which I lost it. Something so simple...that we throw out every day...could bring so much joy.

Ms. Fornes's script is fearless in confronting profound concepts like love and art with both simple declaration and poetic imagery.

It was one of the best Off-Broadway plays I saw. And it made me appreciate, more, what we all have--no matter how poor we are--and how abominable is our government's policy toward Cuba.

I scanned your essay and scanned the comments herein (will attempt to review them more thoroughly tomorrow).

To let you know that I do very much empathize with you, let me try to explain something, from my own experiences.

I know that often, when I tried so hard to make a point and there was no back-up and an unexpected sort of "pounce" on me for a viewpoint -- having largely nothing at all to do with my point or points -- it was hard to stomach and to understand -- other than I had tried to make a viewpoint(s) and in so doing I had, in a way, exposed my "self." I think that inadvertent exposure of "self" makes us vulnerable, such that instead of our points or viewpoints being literally considered, we become the subject of -- not reasonable thinking and reflection, but attacks on our "substance" -- which is personally painful.

If it is of any solace to you --- you have NOT been the only recipient of such responses.

Personally, I'm not sure I would dwell on it too much, one way or the other. Each of us must examine our own purposes and premises, as I'm sure you did yours. I feel you were nothing but extremely earnest in your endeavor here, even if misunderstood -- here and there. 'Nuff said!

Really wish you wouldn't go -- just ride above!

No more left or right. No more liberal or conservative. As long as those terms are used to frame the dialog the discussion can be limited and controlled.

I think it's time for us and them. Us would be the great unwashed masses. Them would be the gated-community hoppers. We drive, they're driven. We fly, they get flown. We eat, they feast.

Unfortunately, we're just not hungry enough. Yet.

Who shaved the Beaver is an intriguing question, but I'm just as interested in why this shaving was done and whether it's still being done.

Maybe I should write an essay about this, and take a poll.

Then again, maybe I shouldn't.
