1 Eyes of the world are on you, UN chief tells climate summit
by Chris Otton, AFP
1 hr 14 mins ago

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - UN chief Ban Ki-moon said world leaders faced a "defining moment in history" as they balanced their nation's interests with a global clamour to halt the juggernaut of climate change.

With just over three days left to broker one of the most ambitious, yet also fiendishly complex, deals in human history, conference chair Denmark appealed for all sides to embrace the spirit of compromise.

But China and the United States -- the world's two biggest carbon polluters -- brushed aside European calls for concessions on emissions reductions, the thorniest issue of all.

2 Walkout heightens failure fears for climate marathon
by Richard Ingham, AFP
Mon Dec 14, 7:22 pm ET

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Negotiators worked through the night Tuesday to prevent a UN climate summit from ending in catastrophic failure after developing nations staged a five-hour walkout and China accused the West of trickery.

As the White House said Barack Obama wants a deal that imposes "meaningful steps" to combat global warming, ministers admitted they had to start making giant strides before 120 heads of state arrived for the summit's climax Friday.

But their hopes were hit when Africa led a boycott by developing nations of working groups, only returning after securing guarantees the summit would not sideline talks about the future of the Kyoto Protocol.

3 Pakistan market bombing kills 20: official
by Abdul Sattar Qamar, AFP
Tue Dec 15, 8:39 am ET

MULTAN, Pakistan (AFP) - A powerful car bomb exploded in a busy market in central Pakistan on Tuesday killing 20 people, in the latest in a stream of deadly attacks to hit the country, officials said.

The bombing in the town of Dera Ghazi Khan came as Pakistan battles Islamist fighters and followed on the heels of a visit by top US military commander General David Petraeus.

"There are at least 20 dead and 50 injured," local police chief Mubarak Ali told reporters.

4 Suicide attack near Kabul hotel kills eight
by Lynne O'Donnell, AFP
Tue Dec 15, 8:12 am ET

KABUL (AFP) - A suicide bomber struck an upmarket district of the Afghan capital Kabul on Tuesday near a hotel and guest house frequented by foreigners, killing eight people and wounding another 40, officials said.

It was the latest in a string of attacks in Kabul blamed mostly on Taliban militants and coincided with a conference on corruption being hosted by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The attacker blew himself up outside the gate of the Heetal hotel in the Wazir Akbar Khan district, near a guest house and the home of Afghanistan's former first vice president Ahmad Zia Massoud.

5 Bombers breach Baghdad security again, killing four
by Salam Faraj, AFP
Tue Dec 15, 3:51 am ET

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Three car bombs struck the heart of Baghdad on Tuesday killing four people in the fourth wave of coordinated attacks in as many months, days after top ministers were quizzed in parliament over security.

Fourteen people were wounded in the blasts, which came in quick succession during the height of the morning rush hour, an interior ministry official said.

The first bomb exploded in a car park opposite the Iranian embassy around 7:30 am (0430 GMT), the second minutes later near the foreign ministry and the third soon after in a car park by the ministry for emigres and displaced persons.

6 Guantanamo inmates to be moved to Illinois jail
AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama has decided to transfer dozens of Guantanamo Bay detainees to an isolated jail in rural Illinois amid moves to close the notorious facility, officials said Tuesday.

"The president has directed, with our unanimous support, that the federal government proceed with the acquisition of the facility in Thomson," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a letter.

But they stressed: "The president has no intention of releasing any detainees in the United States," adding that such a move is barred under current US legislation.

7 Berlusconi to curb his public duties after attack
by Mathieu Gorse, AFP
Tue Dec 15, 11:35 am ET

MILAN, Italy (AFP) - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Tuesday thanked well-wishers from his hospital bed where he is recovering from an attack, saying "love always triumphs over hate".

It was the 73-year-old Italian leader's first public statement since he was hit by a souvenir replica of Milan's cathedral after a political rally in the northern city on Sunday, suffering a broken nose and two broken teeth.

"Thanks to all of the many who sent me messages of support and affection. I say to all of you, stay calm and happy. Love always triumphs over hate and envy," he said on his party's website.

8 Two years late, Boeing's Dreamliner takes to the skies
by Veronica Smith, AFP

EVERETT, Washington (AFP) - More than two years late, Boeing's 787 Dreamliner jet took to the skies Tuesday, in a critical milestone for the problem-plagued aircraft seen as key to the future of the US aerospace giant.

Under dreary skies, the Dreamliner took off at 10:27 am (1827 GMT) to loud applause from those gathered at Paine Field near Boeing's plant in the western state of Washington.

The first flight of the revolutionary new "green" passenger jet comes after more than two years of production problems that pushed back delivery of the first plane to Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways to late 2010.

But we are still "exceptional"!

9 BA launches legal action to stop Christmas strike
by Roland Jackson, AFP
2 hrs 52 mins ago

LONDON (AFP) - British Airways launched legal action on Tuesday to prevent cabin crew striking for 12 days over Christmas and the New Year, with up to one million travellers facing festive travel chaos.

Britain's biggest trade union, Unite, had announced Monday that its members planned to strike in a row over working conditions, threatening misery for passengers flying over Christmas to visit friends and family.

However, BA fought back on Tuesday, saying in a statement it was "seeking an injunction" to prevent the strike, one day after thousands of cabin crew voted to stop working from December 22 until January 2.

10 Banana deal offers hope for global trade talks
by Alexandra Troubnikoff, AFP

GENEVA (AFP) - Latin American nations and the European Union on Tuesday struck a historic deal aimed at ending a bruising 16 year dispute over banana tariffs, offering a potential boost to ailing global trade talks.

Ecuador's delegation to the World Trade Organisation said it had initialled an agreement after consultations with "all Latin American nations" and voiced hope that the deal would "end decades of complaints and legal disputes."

Under the deal, the EU agreed to a seven-year programme of cuts in its banana import tariffs, while Latin American countries agreed to drop their complaints against the 27 nation European bloc, Brussels said.

11 Greek promise of cutbacks leave analysts sceptical
by John Hadoulis, AFP
Tue Dec 15, 6:26 am ET

ATHENS (AFP) - Cost-cutting announced by Greece to clean up the debt-ridden economy and win back credibility with EU partners and financial markets met with doubt and scepticism from observers on Tuesday.

"Market nervousness over both Greece?s position and sovereign debt in general looks unlikely to fade in the foreseeable future," Jonathan Loynes, the chief European economist of London-based Capital Economics, said.

"The measures so far announced to reach those goals still look less than water-tight," Loynes said of the attempt by Prime Minister George Papandreou to shore up his country's debt credit rating and to ease strains in the eurozone.

12 Foreclosure buyer demand dips as supply mounts
By Lynn Adler, Reuters
2 hrs 21 mins ago

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. home buyers are less willing to buy foreclosed properties than they were six months ago, citing risks like hidden costs, but demand could grow because of the government's expanded tax credit, a survey showed on Tuesday.

A continued drop in demand for the glut of foreclosed properties would add a fresh layer of pain to a housing market just emerging from a three-year nosedive.

The percentage of Americans at least somewhat likely to consider buying a foreclosed home fell to 43 percent in November, sharply below May's 55 percent, according to a survey by Harris Interactive.

13 U.N. chief calls for compromise at climate talks
By Michael Szabo and Richard Cowan
1 hr 24 mins ago

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Danish conference hosts warned ministers on Tuesday to compromise at deadlocked global talks to salvage agreement on a new U.N. climate pact.

Ministers and negotiators from 193 countries struggled to make progress on core issues including emissions cuts and climate finance in the Copenhagen talks, three days before world leaders are meant to seal an accord.

"Three years of effort have come down to three days of action," Ban said. "Let us not falter in the home stretch."

14 New troops let Marines tackle Taliban stronghold
By Yara Bayoumy, Reuters
Tue Dec 15, 11:55 am ET

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan (Reuters) - The first reinforcements of President Barack Obama's Afghanistan "surge" will give U.S. Marines the forces needed to tackle the last major Taliban stronghold on their patch, a commander said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Rule, in charge of current operations for Marines in Helmand Province, said the Taliban bastion of Marja was next on the target list. An assault would come once the Marines have enough reinforcements to ensure they can launch it without having to give up territory they already control.

A unit of 1,500 Marines is due to begin arriving in Afghanistan within days, the first of 8,500 in total that will nearly double the Marine contingent in the next few months.

15 Boeing Dreamliner flies after two years of delays
By Bill Rigby, Reuters
1 hr 32 mins ago

EVERETT (Reuters) - Boeing Co's new lightweight carbon and titanium Dreamliner lifted off a runway for the first time into cloudy skies on Tuesday after more than two years of delays.

The 787 Dreamliner's highly anticipated flight was witnessed by several thousand Boeing employees, industry VIPs, airplane enthusiasts and reporters, but excitement and relief rippled throughout the aerospace industry.

"This really sends the message that this is a real aircraft. It'll take time but this provides badly needed stability for the program," said Richard Aboulafia, aerospace analyst at research firm Teal Group.

16 Contractor arrest may ruffle Obama's Cuba overture
By Esteban Israel, Reuters
1 hr 18 mins ago

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba's arrest of a U.S. government contractor employed to help Cuban dissidents may rattle U.S. President Barack Obama's initiative to improve ties with Havana but should not derail it, analysts said.

The U.S. State Department has confirmed the Dec 5. arrest of the unidentified American, who The New York Times reported was handing out telecommunications equipment such as cellphones and laptops on the communist-ruled island.

Havana has not commented publicly on the detention but may choose to turn it into the latest in a long list of diplomatic and espionage disputes that have roiled U.S.-Cuban relations for almost half a century.

17 Pakistan military not seeking takeover: U.S. general
By Michael Georgy, Reuters
Tue Dec 15, 3:14 am ET

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The United States believes Pakistan's military has no intention of trying to seize power, U.S. Central Command chief General David Petraeus said during a visit to an ally that is struggling against Taliban militants.

The movements of Pakistan's all-powerful military are closely watched both at home and in Western countries such as the United States and Britain, which are piling pressure on the government to help them fight a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan.

The military has ruled for more than half of Pakistan's turbulent 62-year history and no civilian government has ever served out a full term, earning the nuclear-armed country the reputation of being an unstable state.

Umm... the fact that this is news is it's own message.

18 Rise in wholesale inflation unlikely to last
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER and DANIEL WAGNER, AP Economics Writers
2 hrs 19 mins ago

WASHINGTON - Evidence that the economic rebound could eventually raise inflationary pressures emerged in a report Tuesday that wholesale prices surged last month.

Most economists aren't worried, though. They think the economy remains too weak for the price increases to last.

The Federal Reserve began a two-day meeting Tuesday and is likely weighing the higher-than-expected wholesale inflation. Should inflation pressures mount, the central bank could be forced to start raising interest rates sooner than expected.

19 Upbeat Obama says Senate near health care passage
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama urged Senate Democrats to overcome the last, lingering disputes blocking agreement on a national health care overhaul Tuesday, declaring they were "on the precipice" of enacting historic legislation that has eluded administrations and lawmakers for decades.

In comments after a private meeting, the president said differences still remain over details, but he spoke in highly favorable terms about the measure that party leaders hope to pass by Christmas.

The bill includes "all the criteria that I laid out" in a speech to a joint session of Congress earlier in the year, he said. "It is deficit-neutral. It bends the cost curve. It covers 30 million Americans who don't have health insurance, and it has extraordinary insurance reforms in there to make sure that we're preventing abuse."

Lies.  He's lying to you RIGHT NOW!

Is the fact he claims to be a Democrat an excuse?

Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but one whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.  My own line of reasoning is to myself as straight and clear as a ray of light.

Let them call me rebel and welcome, I feel no concern from it; but I should suffer the misery of devils were I to make a whore of my soul by swearing allegiance to one whose character is that of a sottish, stupid, stubborn, worthless, brutish man.

I conceive likewise a horrid idea in receiving mercy from a being who at the last day shall be shrieking to the rocks and mountains to cover him, and fleeing with terror from the orphan, the widow, and the slain of America.

There are cases which cannot be overdone by language, and this is one.  There are persons too who see not the full extent of the evil which threatens them; they solace themselves with hopes that the enemy, if he succeed, will be merciful.

It is the madness of folly to expect mercy from those who have refused to do justice.  Even mercy, where conquest is the object, is only a trick of war.

He is mercifully inviting you to barbarous destruction, and men must be either rogues or fools that will not see it.  I dwell not upon the vapors of imagination, I bring reason to your ears and, in language as plain as A B C, hold up truth to your eyes.

20 DC City Council votes to legalize gay marriage
By JESSICA GRESKO, Associated Press Writer
35 mins ago

WASHINGTON - The City Council voted Tuesday to legalize gay marriage, giving supporters a victory after a string of recent defeats elsewhere and sending the issue to Congress, which has final say over laws in the nation's capital.

Mayor Adrian Fenty has promised to sign the bill, which passed 11-2, and gay couples could begin marrying as early as March if Congress allows it to become law. Democratic congressional leaders have suggested they are reluctant to get involved, though gay marriage opponents say they will try to get it overturned either in Congress or at the polls.

Federal lawmakers declined to weigh in the last time they had a chance, after the council voted in May to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere. Congress let that bill become law without taking any action, avoiding what would have amounted to a referendum on gay marriage.

21 Boeing's 787 jetliner makes first test flight
By GEORGE TIBBITS, Associated Press Writer
14 mins ago

EVERETT, Wash. - Boeing's new 787 jetliner finally got airborne Tuesday, the long-delayed inaugural flight of the world's first commercial plane constructed with half its components made from lightweight composite materials.

The sleek jet lifted off from Everett's Paine Field on a flight over Washington state, beginning an extensive testing program needed to obtain Federal Aviation Administration certification.

"It's very historical. I can't think of a thing about it that I'm not impressed with," said Joe Bierce, a flight instructor for Delta Connection in Jacksonville, Fla., who was among the 25,000 people who gathered to watch the takeoff.

22 Kids' Swine flu shots recalled; not strong enough
By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer
2 hrs 27 mins ago

ATLANTA - Hundreds of thousands of swine flu shots for children have been recalled because tests indicate the vaccine doses lost some strength, government health officials said Tuesday.

The shots, made by Sanofi Pasteur, were distributed across the country last month and most have already been used, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 800,000 pre-filled syringes that were recalled are for young children, ages 6 months to nearly 3 years.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, a CDC flu expert, stressed that parents don't need to do anything or to worry if their child got one - or even two - of the recalled shots. The vaccine is safe and effective, she said.

23 US-China tension still looms at climate talks
By JOHN HEILPRIN and CARA ANNA, Associated Press Writers
1 hr 10 mins ago

COPENHAGEN - In a showdown between the world's two largest polluters, China accused the United States and other rich nations Tuesday of backsliding on fighting global warming and the top U.S. envoy said Chinese greenhouse gas emission commitments should be independently verified.

Trying to ease the tension, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said rich and poor countries must "stop pointing fingers" and should increase their pledges to cut emissions to salvage the faltering talks on a climate pact. The European Union also urged both the U.S. and China to increase their commitments on emissions targets, but the U.S. would not change its offer.

New negotiating drafts circulating Tuesday showed key issues, including emissions targets for industrial countries, climate financing for developing countries, and verification of emissions, remained unresolved.

24 Mullen: Most of surge troops will arrive by August
By ANNE GEARAN, AP National Security Writer
1 hr 9 mins ago

KABUL - The top U.S. military officer said Tuesday that he's confident that most of the 30,000 additional troops that are being sent to Afghanistan will be there by August.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters traveling with him in Afghanistan that the first 16,000 troops who already have orders will be in on schedule.

On Monday, Lt. Gen. David Rodriguez, the second-highest ranking U.S. general in Afghanistan, said the rapid escalation of American troops would take longer than expected, possibly as long as 11 months. Rodriguez blamed the delay on the logistical challenges the military faces in bringing in so many forces so quickly.

25 Car bomber strikes near former VP home in Kabul
By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer
1 hr 39 mins ago

KABUL - A suicide car bomber struck Tuesday near the home of a former Afghan vice president and a hotel frequented by Westerners, killing at least eight people and wounding nearly 40 in a neighborhood considered one of Kabul's safest.

The blast was the deadliest in the heart of the city since an Oct. 28 assault on a guesthouse filled with U.N. staffers killed eight people, including five U.N. workers.

Tuesday's attack occurred at mid-morning in Kabul's heavily guarded Wazir Akbar Khan district, an area favored by foreigners and wealthy Afghans.

26 Hints of inflation, but experts aren't worried
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer
9 mins ago

WASHINGTON - The economy flashed a warning sign of inflation Tuesday, but the recovery is so fragile that experts say a doomsday scenario of runaway prices and higher interest rates is a long way off, if it happens at all.

While the Federal Reserve is all but certain to take up the prospect of inflation at its meeting this week, no one expects policymakers to raise interest rates anytime soon to fight the threat. Rates are at record lows to nudge the recovery along.

Even if the Fed did decide to raise rates later, there would be risks: Borrowing money would be more expensive, squeezing corporate profits, and stock prices could fall - all of it threatening to derail the recovery.

27 Blast kills 33 near lawmaker's home in Pakistan
By KHALID TANVEER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Dec 15, 2:16 pm ET

DERA GHAZI KHAN, Pakistan - A suicide attacker detonated a car bomb in a market close to a politician's home in central Pakistan on Tuesday, killing 33 people and showing the increasing reach of Taliban militants in the nuclear-armed nation.

The blast came shortly before the top-ranked U.S. military officer arrived in the Pakistani capital for previously scheduled talks with the country's powerful army chief about the ongoing military offensive against the militants in the northwestern region near the Afghan border.

The insurgents, who are linked to al-Qaida and militants fighting U.S. and NATO troops in neighboring Afghanistan, want to topple the U.S.-allied government in Pakistan and install a hard-line Islamist regime.

28 Australian government to introduce Internet filter
By ROHAN SULLIVAN, Associated Press Writer
Tue Dec 15, 8:54 am ET

SYDNEY - Australia plans to introduce an Internet filtering system to block obscene and crime-linked Web sites despite concerns it will curtail freedoms and won't completely work.

Adopting a mandatory screening system would make Australia one of the strictest Internet regulators among the world's democracies. Authoritarian regimes commonly impose controls. China drew international criticism earlier this year with plans to install filtering software on all PCs sold in the country.

The government said Tuesday it will introduce legislation next year for the filter system to help protect Australians, especially children, from harmful material on the Internet. Critics say it will not prevent determined users from sharing such content, and could lead to unwarranted censorship by overzealous officials.

29 Fed is expected to leave rates at record low
By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve is expected to leave interest rates at a record low this week. The big question is whether Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues will hint about when they will reverse course and start boosting rates.

Plans for reeling in the unprecedented amount of money the Fed has plowed into the economy to bolster the recovery are likely to dominate its discussions during a two-day meeting, which started on Tuesday afternoon.

The Fed is expected to announce its policy decisions on Wednesday afternoon.

30 Explosions in 2 major Iraq cities kill 9 people
By SAMEER N. YACOUB, Associated Press Writer
Tue Dec 15, 12:27 pm ET

BAGHDAD - A barrage of bombings killed nine people in two of Iraq's largest cities Tuesday, stoking Iraqis' anger that insurgents continue to slip past security forces amid looming national elections and the U.S. military's planned exit.

The explosions in Baghdad and Mosul come on the heels of last week's horrific suicide bombings in the Iraqi capital that killed 127 people and wounded more than 500. Those blasts intensified pressure on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to improve security as he heads into key elections early next year.

Though not as deadly as past attacks, Tuesday's bombings struck the same open wound: They were the fourth in recent months to target government buildings and were the latest to hit near the Green Zone, Baghdad's most fortified neighborhood, housing parliament, ministries and the U.S. Embassy.

31 Poll: Action on climate will heat up economy, jobs
By DINA CAPPIELLO, Associated Press Writer
Tue Dec 15, 11:04 am ET

WASHINGTON - More Americans believe steps taken to reduce global warming pollution will help the U.S. economy than say such measures will hurt it. It's a sign the public is showing more faith in President Barack Obama's economic arguments for limiting heat-trapping gases than in Republican claims that the actions would kill jobs.

In an Associated Press-Stanford University poll, 40 percent said U.S. action to slow global warming in the future would create jobs. Slightly more, 46 percent, said it would boost the economy.

By contrast, less than a third said curbing climate change would hurt the economy and result in fewer jobs, a message Republican members of Congress plan to take to an international global warming conference in Copenhagen this week.

32 Pa. House whip, official who resigned are charged
By MARC LEVY and MARK SCOLFORO, Associated Press Writers
6 mins ago

HARRISBURG, Pa. - State prosecutors added more defendants Tuesday to their expanding legislative corruption case, accusing a longtime House Democratic leader and former legislator serving in the governor's cabinet of illegally using taxpayer-paid employees to perform campaign work.

State Rep. Bill DeWeese, the former House speaker and now majority whip, and former Rep. Stephen Stetler, who resigned as Pennsylvania's secretary of revenue hours before the charges were announced, face four counts of theft and one count each of conspiracy and conflict of interest. A district office aide to DeWeese, Sharon Rodavich, also was charged.

DeWeese is the second former House speaker ensnared in the probe; former speaker John M. Perzel of Philadelphia is among 10 people with ties to House Republicans who have been charged. Attorney General Tom Corbett has also charged 12 other people associated with the Democratic caucus in the three-year-long investigation.

33 In a wired world, news good and bad touched all
By MARCUS ELIASON, Associated Press Writer
1 hr 17 mins ago

From climate change, swine flu and economic meltdowns to terrorism and nuclear menace, the shocks, threats and surprises that befell humanity in 2009 were, more than ever, an experience globally shared.

When sweeping anti-government protests became the biggest challenge to confront Iran's 30-year-old Islamic revolution, the regime tried to suppress the news but couldn't stop a video of a dying Iranian woman from becoming an icon for protesters around the world.

The rising call to combat climate change sharpened dilemmas about the impact on pocketbooks, and the need to reduce carbon footprints everywhere, from the mansions of the wealthy to remote logging camps in the tropical forests.

34 Ohio justices: Cell phone searches require warrant
By STEPHEN MAJORS, Associated Press Writer
1 hr 37 mins ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Police officers must obtain a search warrant before scouring the contents of a suspect's cell phone unless their safety is in danger, a divided Ohio Supreme Court ruled Tuesday on an issue that appears never to have reached another state high court or the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Ohio high court ruled 5-4 in favor of Antwaun Smith, who was arrested on drug charges after he answered a cell phone call from a crack cocaine user acting as a police informant.

Officers took Smith's cell phone when he was arrested and, acting without a warrant and without his consent, searched it. They found a call history and stored numbers that showed Smith had previously been in contact with the drug user.

35 Female vets face homelessness, dearth of services
By KIMBERLY HEFLING, Associated Press Writer
Tue Dec 15, 11:17 am ET

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The $15,000 that former Army Pvt. Margaret Ortiz had in the bank when she left Iraq is long gone, spent on alcohol and cocaine.

By the time she found her way to a program run by the nonprofit U.S. Vets for homeless female veterans in this Southern California city, she'd slept in San Diego on the beach or anywhere she could find after a night of partying. One morning, she woke up behind a trash bin, her pants torn, with no memory of what happened.

Instead of helping her forget her six months in Iraq, where she said she faced attacks on her compound and sexual harassment from fellow soldiers, the alcohol and drugs brought flashbacks and raging blackouts. She said she tried to kill herself.

36 New VA patients younger, more likely to be women
By KIMBERLY HEFLING, Associated Press Writer
Tue Dec 15, 12:00 am ET

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Doctors at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in this quiet, bucolic town tucked between coal country and the nation's capital used to go months without treating a female veteran.

Today, they're reporting the beginning of a boom.

Mixed with the Vietnam and World War II-era patients waiting for a doctor are 20-something-year-old women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, reading Allure magazine and, in some cases, coming in for pregnancy tests.

37 Detroit artists use city's blight as their canvas
By MIKE HOUSEHOLDER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Dec 15, 8:28 am ET

DETROIT - Houses with dreary urban facades covered in polka dots. A traveling dollhouse made from the remnants of abandoned homes. A dilapidated residence covered in ice.

Artists across the Detroit area are using the city's blight as their canvas, transforming abandoned homes into high-concept projects to draw attention to the homelessness, poverty and urban decay plaguing Detroit. They hope the ongoing experiment will shed some creatively inspired light on what Detroit was, is and could be again.

The work harks back to two decades ago when Tyree Guyton transformed a deteriorating Detroit neighborhood into a colorful, outdoor polka-dot art gallery.

Have you ever noticed that those who crow most loudly (4.00 / 2)
about American exceptionalism don't actually want to do anything to actually have our country be exceptional in any particular sense except a hagiographic one?

If one wants America to be exceptional, then it would follow that one would support human rights both at home and abroad .. unequivocally.

If one wants America to be exceptional in the sense of being munificent to others in the world, it might be a good idea to stop bombing the shit out of people who didn't do anything to us.

If one wants America to be exceptional technologically, then it might be a good idea to stop trying to muzzle scientists and dumbing down education and once again make our country a good place for the learned around the world to come?

And if one wants America to be exceptional economically, then it might be a good idea to stop outsourcing, stop paying trillions of dollars for a military that thrives on insecurity and stops rewarding the greed of the few at the expense of the many.

I have no idea with having a certain amount of pride in our country but that has to come with actually wanting to make our country better.
