On Meet The Press today, Rachel Maddow made a point that should NOT be overlooked by Democrats in the House and Senate who wish to remian in their elected offices in 2010 and beyond, and that is the fact that if the Stupak-Pitts C Street anti abortion amendment in the House version of Health Care Reform is NOT removed if/when the bill goes to Conference to be merged with the Senate bill, there will be MASSIVE blowback for the Democratic party from it's female base.

    More below the fold

MinistryOfTruth :: Maddow: Democratic women will REVOLT over Stupak-Pitts if it is not removed in Conference
Maddow:     "The Stupak amendment . . . is the biggest restriction on abortion funding since the Hyde Amendment, it's the biggest restriction on abortion access in this country in a generation, if it took a Democratic President 60% majorities in the House and Senate are Democrats to get that I think you can expect Democratic women to sit on their hands at least, if not revolt if that doesn't get taken out in conference."

Editorial Note: I HATE Meet The Press, and the only reason I suject myself to it, or you, my dear readers, is for moments like these whn someone actually makes sense instead of echoing the "Dems are losing/The GOP is gonna win" talking points.

Simply put, if women's rights are restricted by a Democratic Majority in Congress and a Democratic President in the White House, the women who make up the Democratic base will either sit n their hands in 2010 or hold a massive revolt which will cripple the Democrtaic party in future elections.

Rachel Maddow is THE best journalist in American politics today, in my humble opinion, and I think she deserves a pulitzer prize for her reporting on the astroturf protests of the last year. Not only should she be a regular on Meet The Press, she should have David Gregory's job.

But Rachel made two very salient points on the show today, and those were that Creigh Deeds lost in Virginia because he ran to the right of our President and his overwhelming popular agenda of reform, and that the more that Democrats legislate like Conservative Republicans, the less motivated their base will be in supporting them in elections in the future. As valuable as Independant voters are appealing to them should NOT trump keeping your base satisfied with the direction that your party is going in, and that means being LESS like your political opponents, not MORE like them.

The bigger point, which ties into the first, is that Democrats can NOT continue to betray their base and expect them to support them, and that is proven by the Stupak-Pitts Amendment that was passed last night. If Democrats do something Republicans have not been able to for decades, which is to limit the rights of women's choice, there will, and SHOULD, be massive blowback. Women and Democrats did NOT hand Democrats huge majorities in order to legislate like Republicans, who are tremendously unpopular for a reason. This goes for LGBT rights, Torture Accountability, Wall St reforms and many, many other issues.

The political reality is that Democrats who win elections by narrow decisions BECAUSE of strong suppport from their bases, be it financial support, volunteer support and GOTV efforts. Those individual Democratic officials that spurn those bases WILL lose, because an energized Democrtaic base is what motivates undecided voters and independant voters to join our side. Without that motivation, Republicans WILL win those elections based on the fact that thrie hard core base (which is all that they have left) NEVER miss elections.

In elections, often the difference comes down to which base wants to win more. By turning away the Democratic base and voting like Republicans, the Democrtaic party is shooting it's hunting partner in the face.

The easiest way for Democrtas to LOSE elections is to not use the power given to them by their voters to enact policies that they run on. Let every Democrat in Congress beware on Stupak-Pitts, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Did you see this today?

This is a rant.  It's a rant most of you are probably going to viscerally disagree with.  That's fine.  I think discussion makes us stronger, not weaker.

Anyway, here's the short of it.  I don't understand why everyone has such a big problem with the Stupak-Pitt Amendment.

I'm Catholic.  I consider myself both pro-choice and pro-life.  Yes, really.

[ Parent ]
Huh, they're all Catholics except Pitt, (4.00 / 3)
who's "Evangelical Christian".  Surprise, surprise!

[ Parent ]
Too funny. (4.00 / 3)
He starts off with "I don't understand why everyone has such a big problem with the Stupak-Pitt Amendment" and then goes on and on and on trying to justify his support of it, then claims he's not really supporting it, mind, you, just has no problem with it and so would vote for it if he had the chance... but makes no attempt to ask questions or understand opposition to it.

[ Parent ]
Good luck with this. (4.00 / 5)

MoT (4.00 / 4)
did you see emptywheel on this?

As you read Bart Stupak boasting of taking reproductive choice away from women, remember that he's not just an otherwise good Democrat (he's not, in fact, a Blue Dog) who consistently lets the agenda of the Catholic Church override the well-being of his constituents, he's also one of C-Street's top Democratic members.  This man, crowing over his legislative success is speaking as a representative of a group that preaches moral purity for others, but excuses itself from such moral guidelines with a back-slapping prayer lunch with the buddies. And then turns around and uses that moralizing to accrue political power.

No justice, no peace.

NARAL and Planned Parenthood made yesterday's vote possible.  They're in the veal pen.  Who says they won't do it again?

Honestly, MiniTruth -- have you lost your copy of "Chomsky for Beginners"?

"Mientras el trabajo sea una comodidad, un mecanismo de extracción de plusvalía y un arma de alienación, el sistema y sus miserias sobrevivirán."  -Peter McLaren

I've never read Chomsky, maybe now is the time to (4.00 / 5)
I guess this crap shouldn't surprise me, Dems don't seem to want to stay in power, thus proving both the need for Quality Control in the candidates we elect, but also the need for a viable 3rd party, one that is neither right or left but representative of the people, NOT the Corproations

Chomsky's Only Weakness, IMO.... (4.00 / 5)
...is he sees too many things in a rigid structural frame. Some things are not so easily categorized. Chomsky's take is always worth reading, though.

The beauty of it all? (4.00 / 5)
I don't even have to know what Stupak-Pitts is.  It's a part of the health destroyment bill, which was sold as yet another "emergency" from "our" government.  I knew it was going to suck a year ago, well before the marketing campaign started.  I didn't have the specifics on how it was going to suck but knew it would suck.

Whatever you do to others you also do to yourself!

I'm trying to think how it could be worse. (4.00 / 3)
And I truly can't come up with anything short of giving insurance companies the right to your organs when you die.

(On second thought, I'd probably better shut up before there's another Amendment.)

All that campaign cash buys a lot of stupid.

[ Parent ]
The upside (4.00 / 2)
yeah there is an upside.  Conflict educates, well it might also eradicate via wars, riots, pestulance, plague and starvation but on the other side of that, should we survive until 2012 humanity is supposed to evolve after getting hit with the benevolent energy of the universal galactic superwave.  As it turns out we become like X-men with that mental power to control time-space or space-time, access all the knowledge of the universe and forever live in peace and harmony with all that is.

Or the other two scientists just say we all get wiped out.
We have free will so we are supposed to choose.  Coin toss?

Whatever you do to others you also do to yourself!

Thank you, MoT! (4.00 / 2)
I imagine there will a lot of screaming over this Stupak-Pitts Amendment.  Sickening!

Next thing you know they'll attempt to keep surveys on what the sexual practices of people are -- how often, etc., to curb the number of unwanted births, as a result of their own anti-abortion Amendment.

When do we get to GROW UP in this country?

Say "YES" to Generation We  Go there, read the Petition and sign, if you agree!   Say "YES" to GENERAL STRIKE

I will have a fun time watching the pragmatists (0.00 / 0)
apologize for this amendment but then Barack had to come out against it - too bad he can't come out against a public option that is not tied to medicare even though it would bring down costs - something which he has threatened a veto for.

Maybe some of the pragmatists will learn that it does not pay to throw constituencies overboard one by one because you are left with no one when you want to defend what used to be left wing policies and are now centrists policies.

Moral of the story - the right wing wins when there is no left wing solidarity.
