Pony Party: Firefox Warning

Hi, there!

I've been a fan of Firefox as my default browser since v. 1.5 was released out of Beta testing.  Every upgrade has been better than the one before...

Until today.

This morning, I saw that 3.5 was out of Beta testing & decided to upgrade.

Bad move.  It was much, much slower than 3.0.11 and was "wonky," if you know what I mean.  Just didn't work right, and was extremely slow besides.  Worse than the current version of Internet Explorer (previously the slowest browser I've ever used).

More after the jump...

NB: Pony Party is an Open Thread.  Please do not rec the party, and please post your own thoughts, lols, vids, or whatever in the comments.

Youffraita :: Pony Party: Firefox Warning
Since neither of my two online "consultants" (i.e., people I beg for help when I'm stymied) seemed to be around, I went to the Mozilla site & checked out the forums.

Turns out I'm not alone.  Lots of people have had this issue with FF 3.5: many, like me, are running Windows XP, but others are running Vista, and at least one is running a Mac.  It's a bug in FF, not in our computers.

In one thread, some people posed the same question I was asking myself: how do I get back to FF 3?  Continued to scroll down the thread and some kind soul had posted the link, with advice to do a complete uninstall of 3.5.

So I did.  And now I've reinstalled 3 and it's working beautifully...even has my same bookmarks...I thought I'd lose them for sure!

So if anyone here needs it, just ask, and I'll provide the link to FF 3.0.11.

Now, on to the fun stuff!

Thanks (4.00 / 7)
I was going to update my laptop tonight. I already did this one but everything is slow on it so I didn't notice anything.

Not everyone has this problem, (4.00 / 5)
but a lot of people do.  One guy in the forum said he upgraded 5 computers, and 4 of them were fine but the fifth had that issue.  To be safe, I'd wait & upgrade later (and keep checking the FF forums for bugs).

PDFs (4.00 / 2)
Ugh. Using FF 3.0.11 and every time I hit a PDF link it crashes. Oh well, I just have to remember not to do that. Other than that it's so much better than IE (any version). I was running with the FF betas for a while, never found any issues there, may go back to running the betas.

In my case it's more likely a problem with the gagillion other programs loaded than a FF problem, shit happens when you run the same PC for 10 years. But my Linux PCs have zero problems!

Whichever way your pleasure tends, if you plant ice you're gonna harvest wind.

Odd, that...I've never (4.00 / 2)
had any trouble with pdf files on any Firefox version (well, I didn't try with 3.5, I was having so many other issues I just wanted 3.0.11 back!).  Linux is probably the way to go, and if I weren't such a software idiot, I'd want it too.

But, I am a software idiot.  Can barely manage html code...and that's after begging OTB or ek for help.

Thanks for Firefox heads up. I have 3.0.11, but have been.... (4.00 / 5)
having problems with internet searches with Google and Yahoo for over a couple of months, and wonder if anyone else has had this happen:

When I have a couple of windows open and do a couple of searches, Google (or Yahoo search) will "lock up" and I have to close the program, which closes all the open windows too.

I've found that I can do searches with Bing.com and don't have that problem.

The "freeze up" happens both with Firefox and with IE.  I don't have a clue if it has to do with the browser, with the fairly new Dell computer with Vista, with my Internet Service Provider (Charter), or with Google?

I don't know what to tell you... (4.00 / 5)
ek hornbeck and On The Bus are much more knowledgeable than I am.

Agreed about Bing, though: today was the first time I've used it (didn't have a choice after I uninstalled FF, did I?) and it seems pretty good.  But I'll stick with Google & FF 3.0.11 for now.

FWIW, I rarely have a problem with FF freezing on me.  IE did, the first time I tried to reinstall FF, but that might have been my computer wanting to crash anyway.

Could be anything. (4.00 / 2)
What I have noticed is that Flash Player is a frequent source of problems for me.

Of course I also keep clunking along with FF 1.5.0.12 except when I'm in my Ubuntu environment (as I am now).

There I don't have that problem as no 64 bit Flash Player exists except in beta and it doesn't work at all.

It seems to me to be a good idea to keep several browser options available.  linux has a gajillion and in Windows you have Opera and Chrome as alternatives to the more popular IE and FF.

ek, what about Safari? (4.00 / 1)
Any experience there?  I'm running XP Pro, I think.

Safari... (4.00 / 1)
is an Apple thing.

I think.

Safari runs on PC's too (4.00 / 2)
Supposedly a lot like Chrome.
It kept freezing up on my desktop but that's not a good one to judge anything by.
I have to hand crank it to start up.

Firefox Crash (4.00 / 6)
thanks for the heads up Youff.  I am still using 3.0.11 and will hold off upgrading until the latest version is stable.

Love that pic, OTB! (4.00 / 3)
Yeah, I was very surprised.  As noted above, I've been with FF since v. 1.5 was released, and every upgrade has been better, and worked for me with no hitches.  But this particular problem seems fairly widespread.  From what I read today, Mozilla will support 3.0.11 until sometime early next year...and we can but hope they debug 3.5 by then.

Don't try to use an old MS Explorer version instead... (4.00 / 3)
Very bad things are currently happening to people who do.

All that campaign cash buys a lot of stupid.

Thanks for that... (4.00 / 3)
I think I'm running IE 8 (it has Bing? Bink? Boink?) and ran a lot faster than the last time I ran IE...which I only do when it's absolutely necessary, iow, almost never.

FF is my default browser; this is the first time I've had a problem with any of their upgrades.  So -- as noted above -- I'm back to FF 3.0.11, and loving it.
