ek reports today in his Weekend News Digest that the:

Administration Seeks an Out On Bailout Rules for Firms

Officials Worry Constraints Set by Congress Deter Participation

By Amit R. Paley and David Cho

The Obama administration is engineering its new bailout initiatives in a way that it believes will allow firms benefiting from the programs to avoid restrictions imposed by Congress, including limits on lavish executive pay, according to government officials.

Administration officials have concluded that this approach is vital for persuading firms to participate in programs funded by the $700 billion financial rescue package.

The administration believes it can sidestep the rules because, in many cases, it has decided not to provide federal aid directly to financial companies, the sources said. Instead, the government has set up special entities that act as middlemen, channeling the bailout funds to the firms and, via this two-step process, stripping away the requirement that the restrictions be imposed, according to officials.

I take it that:

The Obama administration is engineering its new bailout initiatives in a way that it believes will allow [enormous multmillion dollar payouts to their criminal friends on Wall Street to] avoid restrictions imposed by Congress, including limits on lavish executive pay, according to government officials.

Administration officials have concluded that [enormous multmillion dollar payouts to their criminal friends on Wall Street are] vital for persuading firms to participate in programs funded by the $700 billion financial rescue package.

Edger :: Sidestepping? Sidestepping Is Cool!

How many of those bankers meeting with Obama the other day looked at each other after he said that "My administration ... is the only thing between you and the pitchforks", and then turned back to Obama and replied with something like:

"Thanks Buddy, for being on our side and covering our asses! What a guy!"

I watch the ripples change their size (4.00 / 9)
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

I don't believe it... (4.00 / 2)
...but I'm going back to sleep anyway.  There is only so much of this a sane person can take without irreparable damage!

Edger, great post as always. (4.00 / 8)
Get the sense that during the late 1960s, you would have been a writer for Rowan and Martin.

I would have been a member of the Weather Underground, except I wasn't.

Rowan and Martin? (4.00 / 7)
Ummmm... thanks? heh!

Great diary and love the Carlin routine. (4.00 / 2)
Do you know what year it was?

I don't and I wish I did. (4.00 / 2)
There is a story in that video itself.

That Carlin routine was all over the web, multiple copies on youtube, and multiple copies on other video hosting sites too. For years.

Interesting note is that over the past month or so since there started to be huge public outrage over banking execs bonuses and the money being shoveled into bailing out bankers, all the copies of that skit have been removed from all the video hosts, ostensibly due to "copyright infringement claims" by Warner Music Group (WMG).

The copies of it were up on the web for years, until a month ago.

Who's pressuring WMG?

Tarfin, the youtube user who posted this last remaining copy, successfully fought WMG copyright infringement claim with the argument that the video is constitutes fair use, and is provided for educational, informational, journalistic and historical purposes.

Youtube, who had already blocked the video, was forced to restore it. But no others have been restored.

But, but, but... Obama is better than McCain! (4.00 / 4)
Obama is going to send some sternly worded letters to the bankers. In his next million dollar book deal, Obama will explain how he made the bankers feel very bad about crashing the economy. He will reveal that he frowned at them repeatedly and refused to send them holiday cards from the White House. This administration means business!

Well shit! Stern is good! (4.00 / 2)
Isn't it??? ;-)

Well sure... (4.00 / 2)
