Amazing:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in a determinedly good mood when she sat down to lunch with reporters yesterday. . . . But her spirits soured instantly when somebody asked about the anger of the Democratic "base" over her failure to end the war in Iraq.

"Look," she said, the chicken breast on her plate untouched. "I had, for five months, people sitting outside my home, going into my garden in San Francisco, angering neighbors, hanging their clothes from trees, building all kinds of things -- Buddhas? I don't know what they were -- couches, sofas, chairs, permanent living facilities on my front sidewalk." Unsmilingly, she continued: "If they were poor and they were sleeping on my sidewalk, they would be arrested for loitering, but because they have 'Impeach Bush' across their chest, it's the First Amendment."

Though opposed to the war herself, Pelosi has for months been a target of an antiwar movement that believes she hasn't done enough. Cindy Sheehan has announced a symbolic challenge to Pelosi in California's 8th Congressional District. And the speaker is seething.

"We have to make responsible decisions in the Congress that are not driven by the dissatisfaction of anybody who wants the war to end tomorrow," Pelosi told the gathering at the Sofitel, arranged by the Christian Science Monitor. Though crediting activists for their "passion," Pelosi called it "a waste of time" for them to target Democrats. "They are advocates," she said. "We are leaders."

She hates us. She really hates us. But by all means, let's coddle the Dem leaders in Congress. I'm sure she'll lead us somewhere. Suuuure she will.

She's right (4.00 / 9)
People who are against war, against killing, who want to *deal* with what's going on ARE like the *scummy poor*! They are MUCH MORE of a problem than the war itself, than the crimes the Republicans are committing because, let's face it, those aren't really crimes since they don't hurt anyone much.

And Nancy has a point, a very strong point, when she reminds us of how much she is LEADING.

She's doing it all! Good job, Nancy!

Or maybe that should be (4.00 / 3)
heckuva job, Nancy!

[ Parent ]
You left out the part about how many times she smiled. (4.00 / 6)
I do think this outburst by Madam Speaker explains a lot about her failure to listen to voters and heed the polls.

"We can't change the country. Let us change the subject." Stephen Dedalus in Ulysses, by James Joyce(1922).

You're right - that is amazing. (4.00 / 6)
My opinion of Ms. Pelosi just went deeper into the crapper and I didn't think that was possible.

She's not leading anyone; she's following George W. Bush.

Maybe we should be howling to impeach Pelosi instead. This is very sad.

The alledged "opposition party" refuses to "oppose".

Surprising she is so unsavvy as to say this (4.00 / 6)
in an interview setting. She does appear to be quite the S.F. patrician.  This proves it.

re: SF Patrician (4.00 / 5)
you know, that's what I thought when she first ran and then I changed my mind...now I'm changing it back.

[ Parent ]
Lotsa "Don't be ridiculous" (3.00 / 3)
and "What a silly question" evasions lately.

As if she's above all this petty war nonsense.

All that campaign cash buys a lot of stupid.

[ Parent ]
If nothing else (4.00 / 5)
you'd think she'd be more politically astute. It would seem to me that this statement could be political suicide for her in her district.

Since impeachment and ending the war are officially "off the table" I guess that just leaves kissing Bush's ass.

I really am ashamed of her. She just  succeeded in making me sick.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H. L. Mencken

[ Parent ]
Politically astute? For what? (4.00 / 7)
Its a badge of honor among the Dems to dis the base.  They only respect that which they fear.  We need to Lieberman as many as possible.

[ Parent ]
I guess... (4.00 / 1)
But you'd think re-election might cross (what's left of) her mind.

[ Parent ]
This doesn't surprise me at all... (4.00 / 7)
Disappoint me - yes.

Surprise me - no.

You could see the anger in her eyes when Wolfie asked her the question about us the other day. In the video you posted here.

I never read that as anger towards Wolfie. I read it from the start as anger towards us.

Poor woman. I feel sorry for her.

Or perhaps I fib, just a little.

Surprises me quite a bit. She didn't get to the top (4.00 / 3)
by talking w/o benefit of self-editing.

"We can't change the country. Let us change the subject." Stephen Dedalus in Ulysses, by James Joyce(1922).

[ Parent ]
Ah yes (4.00 / 2)
To clarify, the anger she has for us is not surprising.

I agree, the fact she wasn't able to smile and 'move on' without the slam is a tad surprising.

But in a good way. We're getting to her.

[ Parent ]
Who is "us" though. I didn't know anyone was camped (4.00 / 1)
outside her residence in S.F. and I certainly wasn't there.  She seems to be referring to DFHs only.

[ Parent ]
True (4.00 / 5)
But I suspect it's more than just the campers getting to her.

And I did love the Buddha reference.

This reminds me of my days as a grad student, (4.00 / 6)
living in the so-called liberal bastion of Palo Alto. The liberal city council of one of the communities (either Palo Alto or Menlo Park - I can't recall which) voted to outlaw sitting on sidewalks. Of course, you and I don't sit on sidewalks. But homeless people do. Affluent liberalism at its best.

Lawn chairs, maybe. Sofas, definitely no. (4.00 / 2)
I wonder if she saw the overnight lines waiting for the first I Phone sales in downtown SF?

BTW: please ask A if he has a blogger agent (0.00 / 0)
and report back.  I'm intrigued by the blurb in yesterday's arts section of NYT.

[ Parent ]
I have no idea what you are talking about (0.00 / 0)
But, I will say that this is his post, and you can ask him yourself.  Also, and no offense meant, but I have no intention of asking any other blogger a question in "meatspace" and reporting back the answer in a public forum.  Anyone who says anything to me outside of a public forum can rely upon my silence.

Ouch. Sorry. Its o.k. to rate my comment "wrong." (0.00 / 0)
Here's the NYT bit:

I am certain.... (4.00 / 1)
...that you meant not a thing by it.  And like I said, no offense meant whatsoever.  But I do believe that any person is entitled to as much confidentiality with me when we meet in person whether or not we are both bloggers.

And I wouldn't rate you wrong at all.  And I'm sorry if my "No, but you can ask him" was harsher than it needed to be.  Honestly.

Poor misunderstood Nancy.... (0.00 / 0)

Pelosi called it "a waste of time" for them to target Democrats. "They are advocates," she said. "We are leaders."

Arrogance. She's having trouble hiding it now.

Pelosi just sent four messages.

1) She has absolutely no intention of listening to the American people and ending the Iraq Occupation, and never did.

2) The whole campaign in 2006 running on ending it was deception and lies.

3) War opposition is getting to her. She's getting nervous and afraid that activists are having an effect, and jeopardizing next year for Democrats.

4) She's begging for people to ease up and give her a pass.

For Immediate Release
01/05/2007

Washington, DC--Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi today sent the following letter to President Bush urging him to reject his reported plan to escalate the war in Iraq...

The two leaders called on the President to instead heed the will of the American people,

Excuse me? Called on who to heed the will of the American people?

Understand This, Nancy:

3% of Americans approve of how Congress is handling the war in Iraq; 24% say the same for the President

Pelosi needs to take Iraq War Funding off the table. Just like she did with Impeachment and an Iraq War Surtax. (hat tip to Bob Fertik)

Just like she just did with her own political future...
